On this day in 1799, President George Washington passes away. He was living in retirement at Mount Vernon at the time. The importance of this latter fact cannot be emphasized enough! Remember: Washington could probably have been a King, if he’d really wanted to be. Yet, at the end of the day, all Washington ever really wanted was to be at home, taking care of his own affairs.
