BIRMINGHAM, Alabama ---Republican presidential primary candidates Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, vying for the image of the most conservative candidate, spoke to a packed audience in downtown Birmingham tonight. The candidates, speaking at a forum at the Alabama Theatre sponsored by the Alabama GOP, both heavily criticized President Barack Obama while also critiquing the other candidates, even if it wasn't always by name. "You need to look to a leader that believes in you, and that's where I lie," Santorum said. The crowd was friendly to both candidates but seemed most warm to Gingrich, as was apparent by multiple cheers...

.........In 1995, Gingrich, then speaker of the House, wrote a memo for GOPAC, which trains Republican candidates, citing language as "a key mechanism of control used by a majority party." In his inimitable, insufferable fashion, he went on to say that his videotaped GOPAC courses had elicited a "plaintive plea: 'I wish I could speak like Newt.' "That takes years of practice. But we believe that you could have a significant impact on your campaign and the way you communicate if we help a little. That is why we have created this list of words and phrases,".. He went on...

[SNIP] ALABAMA, Rasmussen poll: 1. Newt Gingrich 30% 2. Rick Santorum 29% 3. Mitt Romney 28% 4. Ron Paul 7% These numbers are much more salubrious for Gingrich than Alabama State University's recent poll. In that survey, Santorum was 23%, Romney was 19%, and Gingrich was 14%. One explanation? Even though the ASU poll was released Wednesday, it was conducted before Super Tuesday, which shook things up a bit. But... that makes things even more curious, since you'd expect Newt to have fallen after his bad Super Tuesday performance and not risen as Rasmussen suggests. MISSISSIPPI, American Research Group poll:...

MERIDIAN, Miss. – A pair of new polls are giving hope to Newt Gingrich’s Deep South strategy, as he stresses religion and steps up attacks on rival Rick Santorum. Mitt Romney at 31 percent and Santorum at 20 percent. A new official delegate count being kept by the Republican National Committee reveals that Newt Gingrich has won more "bound" delegates in the presidential primary than Rick Santorum. Gingrich has won 107 delegates compared to Santorum's 95, according to the RNC's count, which was made after Super Tuesday. That effectively puts him in second place behind front-runner Mitt Romney. But the RNC does not count delegates from states like Iowa in its total, according to the Huffington Post, which first reported the story. The Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses did not officially allocate any of the state's 28 delegates to the...

Newt Gingrich is canceling campaign events scheduled for Kansas at the end of the week to shore up support in the Deep South. The former House speaker plans to pour his time and resources into Alabama and Mississippi. “Everything between Spartanburg all the way to Texas, those all need to go for Gingrich,” said campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond. The candidate’s bus, his rallies and campaign events will be trained on a southern strategy... Campaign aides also brushed off suggestions by supporters of Rick Santorum that Gingrich drop out... “All of the logic being used by the Santorum campaign is simply...

Georgia: Gingrich 47, Romney 24, Santorum 19, Paul 8. Looks like some chance Newt could even hit 50... Irrelevant (for now) but interesting: GA if Newt wasn't in race is Romney 38, Santorum 37. Mitt may do better in South than expected. Santorum definitely the loser in tonight's 3 polls. Good news for both Romney (in OH and TN) and Gingrich (in TN and GA)

DIRECT LINK He says he's well ahead in Georgia! Come on Georgia!!! J.C. Watts is a popular guy in Oklahoma for a lot of reasons. He is a native of Eufaula, Oklahoma, he was one of the best wishbone quarterbacks in Oklahoma Sooner football history, and he was a conservative congressman from the fourth district for eight years. Newt Gingrich hopes all of that translates into votes. Watts and former Presidential candidate Herman Cain made a stop Monday at Joe Mamma's Pizza in downtown Tulsa in an effort to whip up support for Gingrich before the Super Tuesday primary. KRMG reached Watts before the event and asked why he chooses Gingrich over...

The campaign announced Monday the previously-released ad would be going up on the air in Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama in a signal that Gingrich sees his path to regain momentum in the GOP nomination fight is through the Southern states.

Newt Gingrich will challenge his rivals for the GOP presidential nomination to a debate next week, the former House speaker said Monday. Gingrich said he expects to extend the invitation Tuesday for a forum in Mississippi or Alabama, where voters head to the polls on March 13. "I think we owe it to the people of Mississippi and Alabama to have a debate," Gingrich said on Fox News. "I think that frankly it's to everybody's advantage to have a debate." He also used the impending invitation to single out Romney, the current Republican frontrunner. "I don't think Romney can just...

This is NOT intended to be only a Rick Santorum thread. GOP conservatives need to work together to prevail over Mitt Romney, who is the lame GOP-e candidate. Conservatives need to cinch / clinch the GOP nomination ASAP! For the final decision of who should be the actual 2012 GOP nominee, this should be an end-of-August national convention decision, and NOT a Spring primary decision. Conservatives and the GOP as a whole need the extra time to make the best final decision about the nominee. Several weeks before the Iowa caucus, there was all of this discussion of having one...

Looks like the race towards Super Tuesday is revving up to high speed — and what does a high-speed race need? Lots of gas. After Mitt Romney criticized Newt Gingrich yesterday for “pandering” by promising a specific price of gasoline at a specific time, Gingrich reached back into his January strategy and blasted Romney for being too rich to care about gas prices at all:
