Why is Herman Cain supporting Newt Gingrich? Jan 30, 2012 - 6:25 - Former GOP candidate talks endorsement

I was a great fan of Superman comic books when I was a kid. Among my favorites were those in which the Man of Steel traveled to Bizarro World — a dimension in which everything was the opposite of our normal world. Watching the last few Republican presidential debates, I now have a pretty good idea of how Superman must have felt as he tried to function in a world in which left is right, black is white and up is down. I refer, of course, to the manner in which former Speaker Newt Gingrich is being attacked by fellow...

Did Newt Gingrich resign his speakership “in disgrace,” as Mitt Romney alleged in last Monday night’s debate? No, but he didn’t have the votes to keep the job. On November 3, 1998, Republicans lost five seats in the House of Representatives, shaving their majority to 223 seats, leaving them with a dangerously thin margin. Three days later, Newt Gingrich announced he would not run for a third term as speaker. The pressure had been building for months. In January 1997, Gingrich narrowly won a second term as speaker with only 216 votes — out of 228 Republicans. (Several of them...

GOP voters are sending a clarion call to the party establishment, but it seems GOP leaders are not getting the message. The statement being sent to the GOP elite isn't about Newt, and it goes beyond even Romney. It is about a deep dissatisfaction that has been building for years within the Republican rank and file. With the proclamations of Bob Dole and others against Newt Gingrich recently, it is clear the GOP establishment fears a Gingrich nomination. In truth, however, it is the GOP establishment's own ineffectual leadership that led to the recent surge of the former Speaker of...

A new InsiderAdvantage poll conducted Sunday night of likely Republican voters in the state of Florida shows a significant surge for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The poll has former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney leading with 36 percent of voters, followed by Gingrich at 31 percent. The Sunday results of 646 likely GOP voters are as follows: Romney 36 percent Gingrich 31 percent Santorum 12 percent Paul 12 percent Other/Undecided 9 percent "The race will be tighter than expected," Matt Towery, chief pollster of InsiderAdvantage told Newsmax. Towery noted that his poll showed a surge for Romney on Wednesday, with...

Sarah Palin has spoken, and she says that the Republican establishment is “trying to crucify” Newt Gingrich. To a large extent, she is right (although Newt probably supplied his own nails). On Sunday, NBC reported that Romney now leads Gingrich by 15 points in Florida. Mitt is on 42 percent, Newt 27 percent, Rick Santorum 16 percent and Ron Paul 11 percent. Romney’s big lead is made up of typically centrist subgroups: he attracts 52 percent of people who are not Tea Party supporters, 49 percent of those who self-describe as “liberal” or “moderate” and 49 percent of those who...

Tea Party or establishment. That's the name of the game in the battle for the Republican presidential primary nomination. But sometimes it's hard to determine who's who. Frontrunner Mitt Romney has never worked in Washington but has accumulated dozens of endorsements from Republican officialdom. Newt Gingrich was House speaker for four years, and has lived in Washington ever since his 1999 departure from Congress, but he's running as the outsider who knows how to use his experience to crash the corrupt system and rebuild. The expressions of support are an indicator where the divisions are lining up. Sarah and Todd...

JANUARY 26, 2012 Newt Beats Mitt on Energy Gingrich has revolutionary ideas, while Mitt enlists Bush-era bureaucrats. By Robert Zubrin In the race for the Republican nomination, instead of focusing on where the front-runners differ on policy, most of the commentary has focused on their contrasting personalities, putative past malfeasances, campaign gaffes, debate performances, and other atmospherics. This is unfortunate, because in the critical area of energy policy, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are as different as night and day. Newt Gingrich has been advancing the cause of American energy independence for years. In 2008, for example, he published a...

Florida Paper Backs A Gingrich Presidency Shawna Shepherd The Tampa Tribune endorsed Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, who the newspaper said is an “innovative problem-solver with rock-hard conservative credentials,” over Mitt Romney, whom it called the “safer choice.” Sunday’s endorsement from the city’s second-largest newspaper that leans conservative comes two days before Florida’s primary election in which Romney is favored to win. Despite potential areas of weakness from the former House speaker, the editorial said Gingrich is the best Republican candidate to “take the fight” to President Barack Obama. “Sure, he can be grandiose. His personal life has been, to...

I pledge to you, in the tradition of our founding document, if you help me next Tuesday, and if with your help I become the nominee, and as nominee we decisively defeat the Left at every level, at President, at House, at Senate, and local governments. That I will give you for as long as I am allowed to serve, my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor. Together, we are going to give our grandchildren the country they deserve, not the country that's currently decaying. - Newt Gingrich http://www.facebook.com/newtgingrich

We are a group of Latino Republicans invested in the growth of the economy and the support of Hispanic communities. Some of us have supported Newt Gingrich from the beginning of his campaign, and others of us have supported you. Our purpose here is to advise you that those of us who have stood by you are now withdrawing our backing in favor of Newt Gingrich. We’ve come to our decision based on our belief that your support of the Hispanic community is not a clear representation of what we need.

Of course two people — even if they were once on the same ticket for president and vice president of the United States — can, three years later, change some of their views and root for and endorse different candidates in the GOP presidential primaries. It happens to the best of us, and in the best of families, including husband and wife — just look at James Carville and Mary Matalin … Thus it should not be surprising to see, today, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, John McCain, fervently endorsing Mitt Romney for President and his running mate, Sarah Palin,...

HOW NEWT GINGRICH CAN WIN THIS BATTLE The fight for the presidency has to be seen in stages, with the last stages determining strategy for the opening rounds (some of which have come and gone). The final stage will be a wide-ranging ideological battle between entrenched urban liberal to neo-Marxist "progressives" and whatever the alternative styles itself. If the alternative styles itself as a reasonable, moderate nuanced variant that goes slower, speaks softer and taxes lighter, then many will ask "why should I bother to vote?" or go with the team in place since the changes offered seem trivial, and...

LUTZ, Fla. (AP) — Newt Gingrich on Sunday called GOP president rival Mitt Romney a "pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase liberal." Gingrich made the comments outside a megachurch in Lutz, Fla., two days before the pivotal presidential primary. Gingrich is trailing Romney in Florida and has been labeling the former governor a Massachusetts moderate. Now Gingrich is moving his 2012 rival even further left. He also criticized Romney's campaign tactics during two television interviews Sunday morning, decrying his opponent's "basic policy of carpet-bombing his opponent." One of the ads being run by Romney suggests that Gingrich is exaggerating his ties...
