The superintendent of the Naval Academy has recommended that a former quarterback be dismissed despite his acquittal on a rape charge, the player's lawyer said Tuesday. Vice Adm. Rodney Rempt concluded that Lamar Owens Jr. should be punished for "unsatisfactory conduct," according to a statement from lawyer Reid Weingarten. A military jury convicted Owens of lesser charges. Owens, who had been expected to graduate last spring but remains a midshipman because of the court case, would not graduate or receive an officer commission. However, he would not have to repay roughly $130,000 for the cost of his education at the...

That's exactly what goes on at the exclusive United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, where only 1,200 of more than 50,000 applicants are accepted. In the new movie, appropriately titled "Annapolis," movie-goers are able to get a glimpse behind the scenes of this cutthroat training ground. "I didn't know...

My son has applied to the Naval Academy (I am a graduate) and his application is fairly strong. He has good SAT scores, good grades, and is being recruited to play a sport. Yesterday, the results of his physical were made available on-line and he has a disqualification, enuresis (bed-wetting) after the age of 13. My wife filled out the medical history truthfully- my son did have a chronic problem up to about the age of 13 and then it slowly resolved. He hasn't had any problems since prior to his 15th birthday. We have yet to receive the written...

As the newest students at the nation’s four U.S. service academies start their classes this month, they may not realize they had a slight advantage — they benefited from a shrinking pool of applicants. All of the schools saw a drop in prospective students, with the Air Force Academy (search) experiencing the most drastic change — a 23 percent decline from last year. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point (search) fared the best with a 9 percent drop in applicants, according to figures provided by the academy. The declines are notable because, with the exception of the Coast Guard...

My son attends the Naval Academy and I can say the application process is demanding at best. Go figure that recruitment is up, but these numbers are down? One would think with the cost of a college education they numbers would only go up.

Naval Academy Next Target For ADL After success with Air Force, effort to stop imposed prayers at Annapolis. Stewart Ain - Staff Writer After receiving assurances last week from the superintendent of the Air Force Academy that religious intolerance on campus will end, the Anti-Defamation League is now setting its sights on the mandatory mealtime prayer recited at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. ANNAPOLIS -- President Bush yesterday urged Naval Academy graduates to challenge the status quo in the same way he is challenging congressional Democrats to enact his conservative agenda. "This advice comes with a warning: If you challenge established ways of thinking, you will face opposition," Mr. Bush said in his commencement speech at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. "Believe me, I know -- I've lived in Washington for four years. "The opponents of change are many, and its champions are few, but the champions of change are the ones who make history. Pursue the possibilities others tell you do not exist."...

PHILADELPHIA -- A judge dismissed a wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. Navy that was filed by the family of a Naval Academy student who died in a fall from his dormitory window. Midshipman John Paul Ruggiero, 20, of Gouldsboro tumbled 53 feet from a window at the academy in Annapolis, Md., following a night of off-campus drinking in August 2002. Navy lawyers argued that the legal claim, filed by the midshipman's parents, is barred by a doctrine that protects the military from being sued over injuries to servicemen and servicewomen on active duty. The rule was generally intended to...

BALTIMORE - The only Civil War-era vessel still afloat left its mooring in Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Tuesday and made its first voyage to the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 111 years. The venerable USS Constellation can no longer make the 30-mile trip on her own power, so the sloop of war was moved to the academy by tugboats. The six-day visit is part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Constellation, launched in 1854. It's the ship's first time out of the Inner Harbor since 1955, said Christopher Rowsom, executive director of the USS Constellation Museum. "The...

WASHINGTON - The superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy has resigned in response to findings by Navy investigators that he had improper contact with a Marine sentry last New Year's Eve. The Navy said in an announcement Wednesday that Vice Adm. Richard J. Naughton submitted his resignation Tuesday during a meeting with the Navy's top officer, Adm. Vern Clark, and Clark accepted it. Naughton, who had been in the job only one year, was accused of improper contact with a Marine sentry at the Naval Academy after he grabbed the sentry's wrist. An investigation by the Navy's inspector general substantiated...

Last year I was a member of the admissions board at the U.S. Naval Academy, where I have been a civilian professor of English for the past 16 years. The experience brought one thing home to me with great clarity: Affirmative action, racial and otherwise, is a minefield of practical paradoxes.snipIt is philosophically justifiable to say -- as the Bush administration should be saying, but isn't -- that we want the American dream to be open to all. In the Navy's case, that means the Naval Academy, the officer corps and other leadership roles. But "solving" the problem by deciding...

Changing Skyline | Naval Home is lost only if we let it be By Inga Saffron Inquirer Architecture Critic There's no doubt about it. Demolition by neglect can work. Our federal, state and city governments pass laws to protect historic buildings, but the arson fire that damaged the Naval Home in Grays Ferry this week is a reminder of how flimsy those protections are. William Bolger, a National Park Service official who has been tracking the decline of the U.S. Navy's first hospital, calls the 1827 Greek Revival building "the most important endangered work of architecture we have" in the...

RICHMOND, Va. — The 150-year-old tradition of saying grace before meals at the U.S. Naval Academy may have to be swept aside if a recent ruling against the nearby Virginia Military Institute is upheld on appeal.

In January, a federal court ruled that saying grace before meals at VMI is unconstitutional, supporting an American Civil Liberties Union claim that said such a practice crossed the line separating church and state.
