Charlie Daniels' wife's spirits were lifted this week by President Trump. The country music legend, best known for his monster 1979 hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” died earlier this month of a hemorrhagic stroke. He was 83. On Monday, his widow, Hazel Daniels, and his son, Charlie Daniels Jr., took over his official Instagram account to share a personal letter addressed to Hazel from the POTUS.

The Richard Tucker Music Foundation, which grants prestigious awards to young singers, removed David N. Tucker from its board of directors on Monday evening. Mr. Tucker, a son of the distinguished tenor for whom the foundation is named, was removed after an uproar over racially charged comments that he made on a Black singer’s Facebook page. “The Richard Tucker Music Foundation condemns the hurtful and offensive comments made by one of our board members, David Tucker,” Jeffrey Manocherian, the foundation’s chairman, and Barry Tucker, its president and another of Richard Tucker’s sons, said in a statement. On Saturday, Julia Bullock,...

When Lyric Opera was forced to cancel all its performances for the rest of the year due to the pandemic, it seemingly lost one of its greatest outreach opportunities: The annual free concert at Millennium Park, which reaches thousands of listeners. Rather than take the loss, Lyric general manager, president and CEO Anthony Freud and Ryan Opera Center music director Craig Terry came up with an alternative – one distinctly in tune with our turbulent times. At 6 p.m. July 26, the Ryan Opera Center will present “Lawrence Brownlee and Friends: The Next Chapter,” a free virtual concert spotlighting Black...

In 1969, songwriter and recording artist Wilbert Harrison released "Let's Work Together" amidst unprecedented social strife and racial tensions in America. The song was a clarion call to "every boy, girl, woman and man" to join the burgeoning social movements that promoted peace, justice and equality and a declaration that "Together we will stand, divided we'll fall." The following year, Southern California hippie blues band CANNED HEAT released their own version of the song, which became a major hit and amplified Harrison's call to action and unity. Now, that same band has teamed up with famed actor and musical interpretationist...

Anita White, a blues, soul, and funk singer professionally known as Lady A, has responded to Lady Antebellum's new lawsuit, saying she won't let them position her as an “angry Black woman.” (snip) Lady Antebellum dropped the Civil War-era “Antebellum” and changed their name to Lady A in June, citing “necessary changes to practice antiracism” in the wake of nationwide racial justice protests. But what may have started as a genuine gesture turned out to be much more complicated: White has operated under Lady A for two decades. Now, in an effort to affirm usage of the name, the trio...

The Justice Department is planning a virtual public workshop on one of the most contentious issues in the music business – the future of the nearly 80-year-old consent decrees that have governed how works are licensed. The event on July 28 and 29 is the latest development as the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division reviews the decrees, a move that would have huge implications on songwriters, artists and publishers. According to the DOJ, the workshop will include discussions of competition issues related to public performance licenses, competition between performing rights organizations, and the licensing of music to end users

  • If you had to pick only ONE great band or musical group of the past 50 years who would it be?

I love all kinds of music and I know everyone’s taste of music is different but if forced to pick only one group since 1970 that was awesome, encompassed uniqueness and range and just fun music overall it would be Earth Wind & Fire. I just loved how they mixed R&B, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Latin and Disco and had lyrics to many of their songs that had meaning and message. Maurice White was a genius and his instrumental arrangements for the bands top hits was bar none. Great Car music ‘That’s the Way of the World’ ‘ Fantasy’ ‘Reasons’ Getaway’...

Charlie Daniels, who passed away Monday, was a great musician, a great man and a great example of what makes this nation great. He should be remembered not only for his contributions to popular music but also as a role model for the American dream. Starting from his high school days in North Carolina -- as he explained in his memoir "Never Look at the Empty Seats" -- he never turned away from his dream or the hard work needed to achieve it. "I wanted to be a professional musician more than anything else in the world, and ever since...
