Country group Lady A, which dropped the word “Antebellum,” from their name because of the word's ties to slavery, has filed a lawsuit against a Black singer who has performed as Lady A for years.

How is it that they were “Lady Antebellum” and now “Lady A”, when the group is one girl and two guys????? They are misnamed in the first place.

That’s great. A bunch of white people who don’t want to be associated with cotton-pickin’ days sue a black woman to stop her from using a name she has used to twenty years. They may have trademarked the name, but a lawsuit doesn’t make them look very good.
They're really hoping that the original Lady A will accept some kind of settlement and they can move on.
By the way... if I'm not mistaken the ORIGINAL Lady A is a BLACK blues singer who has used the name for 20 years.
Well; technically, the word is tied to war, not slavery. “Antebellum” means "before the war" and makes no allusion to slavery directly. People who make the link to slavery from the word probably do so because they have dirty minds; or at least racist, anyway.
usually when you apply for a trademark, isn’t there a search done to see if the trademark is available....within a year or two of starting their band, they were using “LadyA” predominantly....
I know of Lady A for years up in the PNW..the gal rocks it on stage. Great soul and blues singer. Can find a set of hers at tela.sugarmegs.org I really can’t believe how the other broad gets off on thinking she can sue...what a maroon....

Why did they drop Antebellum from their name? The Antebellum era (1815-1861) gave us socialism, Marxism and the Democrat Party.
