"What began as a dream assignment for a deserving Morley Safer turned into a dream segment for tomorrow night's edition of "60 Minutes": spend a little time with The Great One, the enormous yet agile gifted natural whose television art has rarely been recognized with awards, but who found a way to synthesize social realism and broad burlesque into some of the most inspired comic creations in all of 20th-century fantasy: Ralph Kramden, the Willy Loman of bus drivers and now an American icon, the Poor Soul, Reginald Van Gleason III, and so on."

Morley Safer, an intrepid storyteller and interviewer whose name became synonymous with the news magazine "60 Minutes," has died. He was 84. Safer was the longest-serving correspondent in "60 Minutes" history. He joined the CBS program in 1970, just two years after it launched, and worked there ever since, contributing 919 reports over the years. He filed his last report in March.

Morley Safer, the longest-serving correspondent in the history of “60 Minutes,” says it is time to retire. We are told by careful pollsters that half of the American people believe that American troops should be brought home from Iraq immediately. This news discourages supporters of our efforts there. Not me, though: I am relieved. Given press coverage of our efforts in Iraq, I am surprised that 90 percent of the public do not want us out right now. Between January 1 and September 30, 2005, nearly 1,400 stories appeared on the ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news. More than half focused on the costs and problems of the war, four times as many as those that discussed...

As my wife and I are celebrating the Labor Day holiday, the war against America is completely entrenched within our borders. When we arrived home Sunday night, I tuned-in to catch 60 Minutes. In the segment Young, American and Muslim, Morley Safer interviewed Muslim students in New York City who attended the Al-Noor School located in Brooklyn. Though American by birth, these young people call the terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center and suicide bombers martyrs. Martyrs.
