If you start with a cage containing five monkeys and inside thecage, hang a banana on a string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana, before long a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeyswith cold water. After a while another monkey makes an attempt with same result... all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it. Now,...

After Iran released news that it had successfully launched and recovered a monkey from space, some have begun to question whether the launch went as well as reported — and whether the monkey actually made it out. Earlier today, France24 andThe Independent both noticed that while the monkey seen in press shots had a prominent mole over one eye, there was no sign of it when the animal appeared later at a press conference. Iran also hasn't released shots of the craft itself after landing, a sharp contrast with the photos released from before the event. The above image from...

Excitement turns to deflation as rhesus monkey gets same old giftOpen-mouthed with excitement, this monkey looked like any child on Christmas morning as he got stuck into opening his presents at Longleat Safari Park. What was going to be inside the wrapping paper? Some berries? Strawberries? Anything to break the monotony of his daily diet of bananas, surely. But as he ripped the wrapping away, his faced turned to shock and then apparent horror as the awful truth was revealed - there was to be no respite. Despite having to make do with yet more bananas, it wasn't all bad...

This holiday season I’m featuring a nutcracker of another sort—the bearded capuchin of Brazil. Native to open woodlands called the Cerrado, these monkeys are nicknamed Hercules with a tail, and for good reason—they can lift a stone heavier than themselves to break open tough palm nuts. (Watch a video of the nutcracking monkeys.) A monkey with a missing foot can still crack just as well. Photograph courtesy Dorothy Fragaszy National Geographic grantee Dorothy Fragaszy has been studying these charismatic little critters in the field, and last week she stopped by headquarters to update us on her research. She passed out...

NAIRPOBI, Kenya — The world’s newest-known monkey is a shy creature with bright-blue buttocks that lives quietly in the remote rain forests of central Africa, according to the American researchers who discovered a new monkey species. Cercopithecus Lomamiensis, locally called the lesula, is barefaced and has a long nose and an aquamarine backside. It is well-known to hunters in the Lomami forest basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but researchers said the area has had little biological exploration and the species was unknown to those outside the region.

CHICAGO, - Officials at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo said a rare Bolivian gray titi monkey was born at the facility. The officials said Tuesday the monkey, one of only about 50 of its species in U.S. zoos, was born to mother Delasol, 21, the oldest titi monkey to give birth in a North American zoo, and father Ocala, 15, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday. The zoo said the monkey is the ninth child born to the couple. Officials said the birth is a "big deal" due to the declining population of the species in the wild.

Maybe Grandpa should stick to sports predictions. The psychic spider monkey at the Staten Island Zoo picked Newt Gingrich as the top banana in New Hampshire’s Republican primary, even though he’s languishing in the polls. And the soothsaying simian completely rejected front-runner Mitt Romney in Monday’s electoral challenge set up by the Daily News. Even the zoo’s curator, Peter Laline, admitted it was unlikely Grandpa’s longshot would pay off in the Granite State. “Perhaps Grandpa has other plans we’re not aware of. Maybe Grandpa started vetting the vice presidential candidates early,” Laline said. The 40-year-old monkey has a good record...

Jon Huntsman is ramping up his criticism of Mitt Romney as a flip-flopper with a new campaign ad. The video, called "Backflip," features a split-screen: On one side is Romney, making apparently contradictory statements — on issues like abortion and an Ohio bill curtailing union bargaining rights — and on the other a small wind-up toy monkey. "I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country," Romney says in a clip from his campaign for governor of Massachussetts. The video then cuts to Romney saying more recently he has "consistently been pro-life." The ad, released Friday, comes...
