In “A Sliver of Light,” the three American hikers seized as hostages in Iran in 2009 reveal for the first time their harrowing ordeal of endurance behind bars in Tehran. Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were waved into Iran by a duplicitous border guard. The men were imprisoned for more than two years.

Take Action: Please call your State Senator ASAP at the MA State House, 617-722-2000 and urge them to oppose the "bump stock" language passed today by the MA House in entirety. Today, with no warning, the Massachusetts House of Representatives added an emergency amendment to their budget based on legislation filed by Representative David Linsky (D) Natick. They voted it through with only three no votes. The language of the amendment was in three parts. I see this having a huge unintended consequence: the creation of "factory high-rate semi-autos", rifles that _come_ with bump stocks, gatling cranks, other creative mechanical solutions capable of out-of-box pushing the physical limits of how fast a semi-auto can be "fired". The buyer can then either remove the annoying high-rate device and use it normally, or just enjoy the popularization of a new exciting category of firearm. They haven't even had the first vote on it, and already we're cooking up workarounds and marketing methods.

It sounds sort of like a mass of crickets. But not quite. A high-pitched whine, but from what? It seems to undulate, even writhe. Listen closely: Some hear multiple, distinct tones colliding in a nails-on-the-chalkboard effect. The Associated Press has obtained a recording of what some U.S. Embassy workers heard in Havana, part of the series of unnerving incidents later deemed to be deliberate attacks. The recording, released Thursday by the AP, is the first disseminated publicly of the many taken in Cuba of sounds that led investigators initially to suspect a sonic weapon. The recordings from Havana have been...

Forget Fermat’s last theorem. The most vexing challenge in mathematics just might be the Monty Hall problem. Monty Hall — born Monte Halparin — presented nearly 5,000 episodes of Let’s Make a Deal, the US game show that inspired the puzzle. It is an onion of a conundrum; layer after layer, and guaranteed to make you cry. The puzzle is this: a contestant faces three doors. Behind one of them is a big prize such as a Cadillac. Each of the other two doors conceals a booby prize such as a goat.

Hillary Clinton: "I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein. The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior."" Claude Rains in Casablanca: "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here." Hillary Clinton is not shocked about Weinstein. And she attacked Paula jones, Juanita Broderick and the many vulnerable women who were victimized by Clinton. She never spoke of their courage.

The position of Secretary of Homeland Security has been vacant since July, when current White House chief of staff John Kelly left for his present position. Nielsen's structured way of working has reportedly ruffled some feathers in...
