The minimum income required to buy a home now hovers at $116,000 nationwide, according to a new Realtor.com® report—but this threshold varies greatly based on where you live. On the high end is San Jose, CA, where homes are listed at a median of $1,467,000 and homebuyers need a salary of $361,000 to comfortably cover these massive mortgage payments. On the low end, homebuyers in Pittsburgh need to make just $67,000 to snag a property at a more modest median of $250,000. In April, mortgage rates started rising again, pushing up the cost of buying a home by 6.9% compared...

Renters living in the New York metro area have the highest rent-to-income ratio in the country at nearly 69 percent, according to a new report from Moody’s Analytics. Figures show that for the first time in over 20 years, the entire United States is rent-burdened, as the average American rent-to-income ratio reached 30 percent. The ratio reflects what percentage of a household’s income is spent on rent. That total is up 1.5 percent from last year’s estimation. New York was followed by Miami, Fla.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Los Angeles, Calif.; and Palm Beach, Fla., respectively. Northern New Jersey; Boston, Mass.;...

"The epidemic is spreading from the states at the ground zero of the foreclosure problems out into areas that hadn't been previously affected," said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at RealtyTrac. The trend is the latest sign that the nation's foreclosure crisis is worsening as homeowners facing high unemployment, slow job growth and uncertainty about home prices continue to fall behind on their mortgage payments. In all, 133 out of 206 metropolitan areas with at least 200,000 residents posted an annual increase in foreclosure activity in the three months ended Sept. 30, RealtyTrac said. The firm tracks notices for...

The economic recovery hasn’t arrived quite yet. Ninety-nine of the nation’s 100 largest markets -- including Buffalo -- have fewer private-sector jobs now than they did a year ago, according to a report released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The sole exception is Augusta, Ga., which added 100 private-sector jobs between March 2009 and the same month this year. The biggest declines occurred in the Chicago market, which lost 133,200 private-sector jobs during the past year, and the New York City area, which lost 133,000. Buffalo’s year-to-year decline totaled 4,600 private-sector jobs, which ranked 22nd on a...
