  • Oregon District shooter’s life was improving. So why did he turn violent?

Connor Betts’ life appeared to be improving in recent months. His drunken driving troubles were behind him. He’d passed the basic math classes that stymied his earlier college attempts. He went to counseling and registered for classes for the upcoming fall semester at Sinclair. But in April, the Oregon District gunman started taking steps toward what would end on Aug. 4 with the death of nine other people, including his sister, as well as himself. He bought a pistol. To keep his parents in the dark, federal authorities allege he enlisted an unwitting friend to acquire body armor, the upper...

Prominent Democratic donor and LGBTQ political activist Ed Buck was arrested Tuesday and charged with operating a drug house, with prosecutors calling him a violent sexual predator who preys on men struggling with addiction and homelessness. Buck was charged with one count each of battery causing serious injury, administering methamphetamine and maintaining a drug house, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Buck is accused of injecting a 37-year-old man, who overdosed but survived, with methamphetamine on Sept. 11. That latest incident comes after two men were found dead in his Laurel Avenue apartment in Hollywood. In both...
  • Democrats say the Red Flag database cannot include gang databases

Democrats advanced a new measure this week to encourage states to pass “red flag” laws. These so-called extreme risk protection orders authorize removing guns and ammunition from individuals deemed as dangerous by some anonymous, unaccountable person, but it would not include the ready-made lists of gang members. Republicans tried to add an amendment including known gang members, but the Democrats will not permit the inclusion of gang databases. It’s odd since gangs are the ones causing most of the so-called gun violence. They would agree to include the names of white supremacists, but not other terror groups.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says a witness told police that Hatcher gave her friend “a lot of money” to find someone to kill her parents, according to an arrest affidavit. Hatcher’s boyfriend had told police he saw Hatcher Monday morning “at a known drug house” where she told him “she wanted to kill her parents,” the affidavit says. While being interviewed by police, Hatcher admitted to stealing the card and making the transactions. She went on to say she used $100 to buy cocaine and gave $400 to her friend to give to someone to kill her parents, according...

Armed smugglers allegedly associated with the Gulf Cartel were responsible for the onslaught of automatic fire that endangered the lives a Border Patrol Marine Unit in early August, as it policed the banks for drug smugglers and human traffickers along the Rio Grande Valley River, in Texas. Department of Homeland Security investigators recently uncovered that it was to prevent the Border Patrol boat from trampling or breaking an underwater pulley line devised by the cartel to transport large quantities of cocaine into the United States, according to a For Official Use Only law enforcement sensitive document obtained by SaraACarter.com... Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Mike Braun (R-IN) are still trying to address the fentanyl and heroin overdose crisis—soon to be joined by a methamphetamine and cocaine overdose crisis—by denying chronic pain patients access to pain relief. They have just introduced a bill they call The FDA Opioid Labeling Accuracy Act, which would “prohibit the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from allowing opioids to be labeled for intended use of ‘around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment’ until a study can be completed on the long-term use of opioids.” Set aside the fact that most pain specialists agree that, in some cases, long-term...

Orlando Lopez, 43, a Palm Coast, Fla. native, faces two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, two counts of trafficking in cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and several other charges. Unfortunately, the man’s mugshot has become a bigger story than the crimes he’s charged with. After the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office posted his mugshot on social media, comments on Lopez’s appearance began to pour in prompting the office...

The Drug Enforcement Administration said Tuesday that Alex Taylor, 49, was arrested March 2 outside his home in San Jose, with agents seizing a Volkswagen Jetta with police-type lighting, two firearms, an imitation DEA badge and concealed weapons badge, handcuffs and a small amount of methamphetamine. A Georgia woman spent more than three months in jail on drug charges after sheriff’s deputies mistook congealed cotton candy they found in a car she was riding in for methamphetamine. A state crime lab eventually showed that they were wrong. Now, she’s suing. In the lawsuit, filed this month, Dasha Fincher alleges that she was wrongfully arrested and incarcerated in December 2016, when she and her boyfriend were pulled over by Monroe County sheriff’s deputies. The deputies found a blue, crystal-like substance in a bag on a floorboard in the car and evaluated it using a roadside test kit,...
