A Terrible Warning Apparitions approved - Important Message for the World In 1984, just before retiring at a venerable age, the diocesan Bishop of Niigata, Bishop John Shojiro Ito, in consultation with the Holy See, wrote a pastoral letter in which he recognized as being authentically of the Mother of God, the extraordinary series of events that had take place from 1973 to 1981 in a little lay convent within his diocese, at Akita, Japan. Hence in Akita we are dealing with a Church approved intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary as sure in this respect as Lourdes, La Salette,...

World War II message washes up A bottle containing a message from a refugee fleeing the Nazis during World War II has been found on a remote Swedish beach. The note, dated to 1943 and scrawled on now yellowed paper, was written in English and asked if the war was over. It was signed by a woman called Maja Westerman from the then Nazi-occupied Baltic state of Estonia, who had fled to Gotska Sandoen, a Swedish island 150 kilometres (92 miles) from where the bottle was found. Thorsten Schwarz, the Swiss tourist who found the bottle, said he hoped to...

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (July 11) - Almost five years to the day that Roger Clay died in a motorcycle accident, his parents got one last message from him - a sun-scorched note he had stuffed in a bottle as a child and set adrift in 1984. A man found the bottle in a St. Petersburg canal on the Fourth of July and returned it this week to Clay's mother. ``I dread this time of year every year. It's the worst,'' Lisa Ferguson told the St. Petersburg Times for Thursday's editions. ``But now I have something wonderful to think about.'' Clay...

PHOENIX -- After the Democrats suffered a wave of defeats in the 2002 midterm elections, party officials rebounded with a promise to sharpen their strategy and emerge reinvigorated well ahead of the 2004 campaign.

More than six months later, however, as Republicans sweep up tens of millions in donations nationwide, many Democratic officials and party faithful say they are still struggling to regain their footing, and are daunted by the next task: Trying to unseat President Bush and win back control of at least one house of Congress.

ST. PAUL, Minn., June 21 -- The DemocraticParty is searching for a unified message, and a powerful messenger who can deliver it next year against President Bush. On that point there was consensus here this weekend among the men and women who run state Democratic parties throughout the nation and who gathered for the annual meeting of the Association of State Democratic Chairs. But it was also clear that the party's central rallying cry for 2004 -- and the presidential nominee who will give it voice -- remain very much in question.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Since the party's defeat in the last governor's race, Maryland Democrats have been searching for a unifying message — an abrupt development for the party that controlled the governor's mansion for the better part of four decades. Democratic leaders say they've yet to find a cohesive strategy or a way to counter Gov. Robert Ehrlich's message of no new taxes and smaller government. "We don't have the bully pulpit. We don't speak with one voice. We're on the outs," said Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, one of the state's most seasoned Democratic politicians. "We have nowhere...

Just like it has in the halls of power of many other Western democracies, anti-Americanism in Canada's capital is growing into a cancerous plague. First the Prime Minister's press secretary publicly referred to the President of the United States as a "moron." Then Carolyn Parrish, a Member of Parliament of the governing party of Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Chairwoman of the NATO Canadian Parliamentary Association, publicly declared: "Damn Americans. I hate those bastards!" And these two imprudent exercises in disfunctional diplomacy were quickly followed by a series of impolite references to George W. Bush, and his foreign policy, by...

An inscribed stone tablet from the time of Yehoash, King of Judah, has apparently been discovered on the Temple Mount. The black stone tablet, containing ten lines of Phoenician script, describes activities carried out by King Yehoash in the First Temple some 2,700 years ago. The inscription corresponds to the biblical account as recorded in Kings II 12, including King Yehoash's call to the Cohanim (priests) to collect money from the public for the purpose of renovating the Temple. The inscription details the purchase of wood and "quarried stones," and includes part of a Biblical passage recounting the event. Nadav...

Saturday, November 9, 2002; Page A04 Rejecting critics' suggestions that Democrats lost the battle for Congress because they had the wrong message -- or no message at all, Senate Democratic Leader Thomas A. Daschle (S.D.) said yesterday it was really just a failure of communication. Democrats were effective in pointing out deficiencies in the Bush administration's economic policies but less successful when it came to selling their own strategies, Daschle said at his first press briefing since Democrats lost the Senate and the GOP solidified its hold on the House in Tuesday's elections. "It isn't for lack of a strategy,"...
