Say, remember when protesters descended on Lansing, Michigan to protest Governor Whitmer’s draconian, capricious lockdown orders? They attacked nobody. They looted nothing. They set fire to not one single thing. And yet they were called terrorists. Failed Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused them of “domestic terrorism” for daring to show up to petition their government for a redress of grievances. Again, they attacked nobody, looted nothing, burned not one thing. But these Americans exercising their First Amendment right to peaceably assemble were domestic terrorists in the eyes of Hillary Clinton. To be fair, Clinton wasn’t the only one accusing them...

LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) - Another protest is planned for Lansing today. But the organizers aren’t bringing guns. They’re bringing scissors, clippers and chairs. Operation Haircut is organized by the Michigan Conservative Coalition which put on the first Lansing Operation Gridlock on April 15. Protesters with guns are expected to piggyback on the event. **SNIP** Seely says this is about what’s safe and small businesses setting up chairs on the lawn and offering their services free. This will include barbers, hair stylists, massage therapists, dog groomers, and seamstresses. Jose Lozano has let his hair and beard grow for the two months...

LANSING, MI -- A fight broke out on the steps of the Michigan Capitol Thursday morning during a protest aimed at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the ongoing state of emergency and stay-at-home orders. J. Scott Park, an MLive photographer, witnessed the fight break out after a man carrying a garbage can filled with a sign, an ax and an American flag removed the flag from the can. Attached to the bottom of the flag was an unclothed doll with brown hair that was hanging from a noose. Organizers of the protest called the display “hate speech” and when one protester...

National Public Radio (NPR) continues to reinforce the years-old case for why its taxpayer-funding should be pulled by hiring a partisan to head up the entire organization. The new president and CEO of NPR, John Lansing, contributed $500 each to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) Aug. 17, 2019, and Kentucky challenger for Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY), senate seat Amy McGrath (D) Aug. 15, 2019, according to Federal Election Commission records. The records suggest he made his contributions just less than a month before NPR announced his appointment to head up the government-funded news organization Sept. 5, raising questions about conflicts of...

A group launched a 2020 ballot initiative Tuesday to expand Michigan’s civil rights law to include anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people, a step that would put the issue to voters if the Republican-led Legislature does not pass the measure. Fair and Equal Michigan, a committee backed by business, political and philanthropic leaders, submitted petition language to the Board of State Canvassers. Once it is approved, the group will have until late May to collect the roughly 340,000 valid voter signatures needed to place the initiated bill before lawmakers. If legislators do not adopt the legislation — similar bills have long...

On the morning of Saturday, July 13, Cindy Eiseler and three of her friends were running along the Lansing River Trail by Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan, when they heard a voice calling for help from the woods nearby. “We heard a man’s voice crying out ‘I need help, I need help!’” Eiseler told Runner’s World. “It stopped us dead in our tracks not knowing exactly where the man’s voice was coming from.” The group did not want to venture into the woods alone, so they called 911 and assured the man that help was on the way. While...

In 1965, Mary Jane McGuire, her husband Cyril and their three children received a letter from the Michigan State Highway Department. It informed them that their Lansing home, where the family had lived for the past decade, would be demolished to make way for construction of Interstate 496. The letter was followed by an offer of federal dollars to purchase their property, a number the McGuires felt was far below its actual value. The couple’s initial refusal to accept the offer meant they were one of the final families of their African-American neighborhood to be displaced for construction of the...

SAGINAW, MI – When police executed search warrants at three Catholic Diocese of Saginaw properties last year during an investigation into claims of sexual abuse of minors, documents show they seized nearly 60 items of evidence. Among them, located in the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet at diocese headquarters, was a file labeled “victim list.” That information is contained in search warrant paperwork detailing what police seized during the March 2018 raid. The paperwork was recently unsealed and copies were obtained by MLive and The Saginaw News. The list of confiscated property shows investigators took 57 items during the...

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is proposing what some opponents are calling a draconian gas tax increase to fix the state’s crumbling road infrastructure. Whitmer’s budget proposal will include a 45-cent gas tax increase, which would be phased in over three separate intervals, the governor’s spokeswoman Tiffany Brown told reporters Monday. The rate would begin increasing in October, hit its second phase in April 2020, and ease into its final phase by the end of that year. The increase is expected to generate roughly $2 billion a year in additional revenue for roads, according to media reports. Whitmer, a Democrat...

Their Facebook Post, which has generated thousands of responses and shares, asks if you have lost a motorcycle driving on I-69 in Clinton County Monday. One of the photos, which appears to show tire imprints in wet concrete, serves as a reminder of why it's not a good idea to use closed lanes...

Michigan’s capital could rescind its decision to deem itself a “sanctuary city” over concerns the ambiguous, contentious term may draw unwanted attention to Lansing. The City Council was holding a special session Wednesday evening to reconsider its unanimous vote last week to call itself a sanctuary. The term “sanctuary city” has no legal definition and varies in application, but it generally refers to jurisdictions that do not cooperate with U.S. immigration officials. Under Lansing city policy, police don’t ask for people’s immigration status, except as required by U.S. or Michigan law or a court order. After last week’s vote, council...

Mayor Virgil Bernero (D) of Lansing, Michigan debated Tucker Carlson on the legitimacy of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' plan to withhold federal funds from cities that won't enforce federal immigration law. Carlson reported that despite Sessions' warnings, Lansing voted to become a sanctuary city, and he asked Bernero when it was OK to defy any federal law in such a way. Bernero said that it is never proper to do so, and added that his executive order on the topic abides by federal law. He invited Sessions and President Trump to advise him anytime on how to increase public safety...

The day after the 2016 election for president, General Motors announced it was laying off another 2,000 workers in plants in Ohio and Michigan, two states that gave President-elect Donald Trump a major victory on Tuesday. GM said the layoffs will affect the third shifts in the plants in Lordstown, Ohio, and Lansing, Michigan, which build the low-selling cars sold under the Chevrolet and Cadillac brand names. “The Lordstown plant builds the compact Chevrolet Cruze, whose U.S. sales through October were down 20%,” Fortune magazine reported. “The Lansing Grand River plant builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS, whose sales were...

A lobbyist organization funded by local governments held a press conference in the state Capitol this week to urge lawmakers to send its members more in state taxpayer dollars. The event took place as legislators are preparing to pass a state budget for next year, and was cast as an invitation to discuss how local government funding is “broken.” Given that message, it may seem ironic that the host city of Lansing collected more tax dollars than it expected for a third straight year and had a surplus. The group is called the Michigan Municipal League, and its members want...
