Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is urging Republicans not to object during Congress’s count and certification of the Electoral College vote next month. McConnell’s comments were made during a caucus call on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the call, and come as House Republicans are eyeing a challenge to the results on Jan. 6 during a joint session of Congress. A Republican senator who participated in the call said that McConnell, Senate Republican Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) and Senate Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) all urged colleagues not to object to states’ electoral votes when they...

South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said he thought Paul — who has provoked government shutdowns before — was using the time-crunch for maximum leverage to remove the provision on troop withdrawals. “I think he’s just trying to figure out ways to derail the bill. And … when you’re in the U.S Senate that’s your prerogative. But most of our people would like to get it done" this week, Thune said. “His thing is just to delay this and use all the time so it pushes the vote on (the defense bill) into next week, which...

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) criticized the media in a Tuesday tweet for what he said was it not reporting a drop in the COVID-19 mortality rate in Spain, which is experiencing a surge in new coronavirus cases. “New COVID infections up 33% in Spain but mortality down 82%,” Paul tweeted while sharing a link to Spain's coronavirus totals. “The Leftwing media reports the new cases but refuses to let anyone hear the good news — mortality rates are plummeting!” According to Worldometers, Spain recorded 17,396 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, along with 93 deaths. The country recently declared a state...

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said he would like restaurants hire more staff that have previously contracted the coronavirus, according to The Daily Beast. During a rally for Nick Freitas, a Republican candidate for Congress, in Central Virginia on Sunday, Paul suggested to a crowd that he would make the call himself if he had a restaurant. "If I owned a restaurant, I’d have a whole wing for senior citizens or for anybody who is worried about getting sick, and I would say, 'All my servers have already had it,'" Paul told the crowd, according to The Daily Beast. "If I...

After President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, I said I believed Judge Barrett would make an excellent justice that would serve our country and Constitution well. Since then, I’ve continued to be truly impressed by Judge Barrett, and after meeting with her this past week, I am proud to reaffirm my position and give her my full support. During our meeting, I enjoyed hearing from her directly about her judicial philosophy — a careful, impartial, and grounded approach...

The Senate will vote on a $500 billion GOP coronavirus relief bill on Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced on Saturday. The bill — which is less than a third of the size of the $1.8 trillion offer from the White House — will include a federal unemployment benefit and another round of small-business assistance under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) The bill, according to McConnell, will also include more than $100 billion for schools as well as money for testing, contact tracing, and vaccine development and distribution. McConnell will require Democratic help to get the 60 votes...

The contractor in Jefferson City, Kentucky, discovered 112 absentee ballots in a dumpster, triggering a federal investigation. The ballots never arrived at their intended recipients. “When the investigation is concluded, the case will be presented for federal prosecution to the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Special Agent Scott Balfour said in a statement. Balfour said that the ballots had been handed over to the Postal Service so that they could be distributed.

Firearms experts say that a ballistics report from Kentucky State Police supports Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s (R) claim that Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend fired the shot that wounded a Louisville officer in the raid that resulted in Taylor’s death. According to the Louisville Courier Journal, the report challenges previous analysis that Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly was wounded by “friendly fire” from other officers involved in the March incident. Instead, experts are saying the 9 mm round that hit Mattingly came from the gun of Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker. Walker had previously admitted to firing one shot from his legally owned handgun. Experts...

A member of the grand jury in the Breonna Taylor case filed a motion Monday in Louisville, Kentucky, to have the sealed grand jury transcripts and records released "so that the truth may prevail." The motion, filed in Jefferson County five days after the jury's decision was announced, also asks that the jurors be allowed to speak about the case as a matter of public interest. In the petition, an attorney for the anonymous juror notes that Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron made public statements that "attempted to make it very clear that the grand jury alone made the decision."...

Footage emerged over the weekend that appears to show Lousiville police officer Brett Hankison enter Breonna Taylor's residence after her shooting death last March. Hankison was the sole Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officer indicted last week following the raid that resulted in the killing of Taylor. The emerged video has prompted concerns about the probe into the fatal police shooting. The footage, which was released by Vice News over the weekend and reviewed by The Courier-Journal, shows an officer identified Hankison arrive at Taylor’s apartment in Louisville as authorities looked over the crime scene. Moments after, the officer is...

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has ordered a state of emergency ahead of an expected decision in the case surrounding the police shooting death of Breonna Taylor. Two weeks ago, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) signaled that a grand jury had been empaneled to hear details surrounding the incident and that an announcement would be made when it had reached a decision, though he didn't offer a concrete timeline. According to an internal memo from Robert Schroeder, the city's chief of police, the emergency declaration stops all days off and vacation requests for LMPD officers “until further notice”...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The city of Louisville will pay several million dollars to the mother of Breonna Taylor and install police reforms as part of a settlement of a lawsuit from Taylor’s family, The Associated Press has learned. The settlement would be the largest sum paid by the city for a police misconduct case, according to a person who has seen the settlement. The person asked to not be identified because the settlement has not been announced publicly. Taylor’s shooting by police serving a narcotics warrant at her home has sparked months of protests in Louisville and calls nationwide...

Labor Day has passed, and in most years, the entire country would now be back to school. Kids would be learning, catching up with old friends, and swapping stories from the summer. Teachers would have decorated and readied themselves for a year of struggles and smiles, learning and community. Traffic is always heaviest this time of year, because of school buses full of kids, and parents going to work, returning from summer vacations. But in far too many places, including much of Kentucky, this is not the reality. There are no buses, no kids in classrooms, and few smiles. It...
