It’s not a Colorado jogger’s fault she’s pooping on people’s lawns — because she suffered a traumatic brain injury, and now simply can’t control where she does her business, according to a man who claimed to be “a family representative.” Her bathroom behavior is similar to breastfeeding in public and is protected under the First Amendment, the unidentified man claimed. But a criminal defense attorney said the man is full of crap. The supposed spokesman, who also claimed the woman underwent gender reassignment surgery ...

A 1-year-old girl was left alone on a Louisiana beach as her parents jogged -- while naked -- three to four miles away, according to news reports. Cody and Monique Bourgeois were arrested on charges of child desertion and obscenity two hours after the child was found, KATC TV reports. The baby was turned over to her paternal grandmother, Johnson said. Cameron Parish Sheriff Ron Johnson told KPLC TV drug abuse is suspected and child protective services has been called to investigate.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- A 38-year-old father of two was jogging and listening to his iPod when he was hit from behind and killed by a small plane making an emergency landing on the beach, officials said Tuesday. Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., died instantly Monday evening when he was hit by the single-engine plane, which had lost its propeller, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen. The pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield. Jones apparently did not see or hear the plane, which was "basically gliding," the coroner said. FAA records show the Experimental Lancair...

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she'd come out ahead if she went one-on-one with fellow jogger President Barack Obama in a long run, according to an interview published online Tuesday. "I betcha I'd have more endurance," she told Runner's World magazine. "My one claim to fame in my own little internal running circle is a sub-four marathon. What I lacked in physical strength or skill, I made up for in determination and endurance." Palin, a 45-year-old former beauty queen who became the first woman and youngest person to be elected Alaska's governor, is featured in the...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People who want to live a long and healthy life might want to take up running. A study published on Monday shows middle-aged members of a runner's club were half as likely to die over a 20-year period as people who did not run. Running reduced the risk not only of heart disease, but of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, researchers at Stanford University in California found. "At 19 years, 15 percent of runners had died compared with 34 percent of controls," Dr. Eliza Chakravarty and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Any...

Running on a regular basis can slow the effects of ageing, a study by US researchers shows. Elderly joggers were half as likely to die prematurely from conditions like cancer than non-runners. They also enjoyed a healthier life with fewer disabilities, the Stanford University Medical Center team found. Experts said the findings in Archives of Internal Medicine reinforced the importance that older people exercise regularly. Survival of the fittest The work tracked 500 older runners for more than 20 years, comparing them to a similar group of non-runners. All were in their 50s at the start of the study. Nineteen...

Nicolas Sarkozy, who was elected president of France in May, likes to make a political point of personifying the idea of vigor. Heckled from a balcony by a striking fisherman, he yelled back, “Come down and say that.” During the recent railway strike, he poked a shop steward in the chest. Addressing a cabinet member with the familiar tu, he nearly left the man, who was once prime minister, speechless. But none of these challenges to the status quo provoked anywhere near the apoplexy with which certain segments of French society have greeted another of the president’s habits, his daily jog in the park.

New elected French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been a jogger for years. But for some reason, his fitness regimen - not to mention the NYPD T-shirt he often sports - has got people’s shorts in a knot on both sides of the English Channel, reports The Washington Post.Left-wing newspaper Libération calls Sarkozy’s choice of exercise "an un-French, right-wing conspiracy." For his part, Sarko says, "Of course it is right-wing … The very act of forcing yourself to go for a run, every morning, is a highly conservative business. There is the mental effort needed to overcome your laziness."But jogging is...

ATLANTA - Timothy "Bud" Badyna has broken world records. He ran a marathon in under four hours. He finished a 10K race in 45 minutes. Wait a minute, you say, that's not so fast. Right. But Badyna set those records running backward. Badyna, dubbed "Backwards Bud" by fellow runners, holds the Guinness World Record for fastest backward run in a 200-meter race (32.78 seconds), set in 2001. In the early 1990s, he held the record for backward marathon (3 hours, 53 minutes) and 10K (45 minutes, 37 seconds). Those records have since been broken. So the 39-year-old hospital nurse from...

An angry and aggressive moose has been chasing residents of the Norwegian city of Molde, mostly when they're out jogging in the woods that border on a residential neighbourhood. Kari Holmås is among those who suddenly found a moose on her tail during an otherwise solitary jogging round. "I just managed to see the moose's face before it hit me from behind," Holmås told local newspaper Romsdals Budstikke. Holmås suffered injuries in her leg, thigh and hip, but says she's glad she survived. Arne Inderhaug had a similar tale to tell. He went out jogging on Sunday afternoon, just after...

The marathon at the Olympics in Athens this month is fearsome, so grueling that even an elite athlete is liable to feel at least a moment of trepidation. The 26-mile, 385-yard course includes, among other body-bashing stretches, a 13-mile hill so steep it has been described as the equivalent of running up a five-story building every mile. Your everyday, normal sort of runner, like me, will be breathless just watching. But many of the Olympic runners will make it look easy. I can run up that mountain only in my dreams, no matter how hard I work. The difference between...

The shooter stepped out from behind a parked van Thursday afternoon to fire the first several shots at the boy, then reloaded his pistol and fired again as pedestrians and the running team fled, witnesses and police said. No one else was injured, but the gunman, identified by police as the boy's father, fled by car into a home about a mile away where...

As I was jogging through lovely Baltimore City today in my W'04 campaign t-shirt, I had an interesting experience. Now, I understand that this is a liberal town, but I was surprised when a large, mustached woman leaned out the window of her toyota camry and yelled "F--- you, Bush sucks!" As she drove off, I could see her car had been plastered with bumper stickers, mostly advertising "Peace." I saw a Attack Iraq? NO! sticker, along with a "War is not the Answer" one. There was also a sticker for some organization (FLRC?--couldn't make it out. . .) Since...

President Lucio Gutiérrez of Ecuador is going to jog to work once a week to show his civil servants how to save money. The former military officer jogs six kilometres from his home in northern Quito to his office in the Palacio de Carondelet on Fridays. The poor Andean country is facing a serious fiscal deficit and Gutiérrez has introduced tough austerity measures. The president has banned civil servants from using official cars and has banned officials from travelling first class. Newspaper Extra reports that he has also banned overtime and is planning to sell off non-essential buildings, including some...
