A Detroit detective was demoted Monday after calling "Black Lives Matter" activists "terrorists" and "racists" in a viral Facebook post. During a news conference, police chief James Craig said the detective, Nathan Weekley, who is white, had been "downgraded" to the rank of a regular officer while the department conducted an internal investigation. "We have worked so hard, and continue to work, in making sure we have great relationship with everyone here in Detroit," Craig said, adding that such comments "have a tendency to undermine" those relationships.

Police say a state senator from Detroit is suspected of firing many shots at his girlfriend's car over the weekend. Police Chief James Craig says Virgil Smith is in custody Monday. He told reporters that a gun was seized from Smith's home. Craig says the Detroit Democrat has been cooperating with investigators. No one was injured in the shooting, which occurred early Sunday.

Two Detroit cops shoved Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter M.L. Elrick on Tuesday while he tried to interview Council President Pro Tem George Cushingberry at the start of a public council meeting.
