SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Saddled with economic problems and its own damage from Hurricane Irma, Puerto Rico is taking thousands of refugees from the U.S. Virgin Islands whose homes were destroyed by the storm, with a cruise ship carrying up to 2,000 more due to set sail for the U.S. territory on Wednesday. Visibly shaken residents from St. Martin and the Virgin Islands arrived on Tuesday on U.S. military aircraft, bringing tales of terrifying winds and a breakdown of law and order. "The people of Puerto Rico - what big hearts you guys got because our (local) government...

Two looters were stopped by Jacksonville police while attempting to steal a power pole in the wake of Hurricane Irma. The highly conspicuous thieves were caught red-handed with the pole on top of their SUV. The looters also attached a flag, made of what appears to be t-shirts, to the back of the pole for safety. It is not clear what they intended to use to pole for. Twitter users noted they would have struggled to sell it for recycling considering it is obviously a stolen power pole.

Mere seconds into the celebrity-filled benefit concert for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma did these stars turn the ostensible charitable event into a platform for left-wing sermonizing. Stevie Wonder, who kicked off the show, began with call for unity, but then turned to mock anyone who questioned the global warming theory. "When love goes into action, it preferences no color of skin, no ethnicity, no religious beliefs, no sexual preferences, and no political persuasions," Mr. Wonder began. "It just loves. As we should begin to love and value our planet." But after calling for love, he singled out skeptics...

While discussing a photo reporters in Tampa, Florida had taken of the intense winds, Williams instructed Florida viewers to not take similar photos of their own. Instead, he suggested they steal this photo, share it, and “pretend you shot it.” “We’ll look the other way,” he helpfully added.

Business owners on one of the Caribbean islands ravaged by Hurricane Irma say the government needs to send in the Marines -- literally -- and increase patrols to combat the thieves and looters running rampant at Sint Maarten's shopping destination. Elsewhere on the island, men armed with guns and machetes are terrorizing residents and tourists alike, while some wait on piers to steal the bounty of boats and ships carrying aid to the devastated community.

Sarah Jaffe Then Complained About ‘Nazis’ Criticizing Her Tweet Reporter Sarah Jaffe posted on Twitter that police arresting looters was akin to white supremacy. Jaffe was responding to the Miami Police Department posting a photo of looters they caught in a jail cell. The Miami police wrote, “Thinking about looting? Ask these guys how that turned out?” “good morning, the carceral state exists to protect private property and is inseparable from white supremacy” Jaffe posted Sept. 11 on Twitter with a link to the Miami Police Department’s post.

After leaving a path of destruction across the Caribbean Islands and Florida, Hurricane Irma downgraded to a tropical storm this morning, though this has done nothing to quell its continuing torrential rain and violent winds in Florida and Georgia. Surprisingly, Puerto Ricans were spared the worst of the storm and are now rallying to aid their neighbors. Though Puerto Rico expected a head-on collision with Irma at literally the most inopportune time, as the country experiences a crumbling infrastructure and fiscal crisis, they only received a glancing blow compared to other islands and much of southern Florida. Still, Irma left...

Hurricane Irma Florida House Call It was definitely in a “glad-I’m-still-here-to-see-for-myself” mood that Doug Bronson ventured outside early this morning to see what kind of damage Hurricane Irma left on his multi acre farm, near Haines City, Polk County, Florida. Doug, known fondly as “Dub” had spent Sunday at his house, hunkering down with neighbors and friends listening to the shrieking winds, house pounding and lashing rains of Hurricane Irma. He was pretty sure that his 45 KW, 30 HP diesel generator would keep the electricity running, and it did.

About 100 "very serious" prisoners have escaped from a jail on the British Virgin Islands in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The convicts pose a "serious threat of the complete breakdown of law and order" on the islands, according to foreign minister Sir Alan Duncan. Speaking to MPs in the Commons, Sir Alan said marines from RFA Mounts Bay were used to "protect the Governor and everything else about law and order" after the storm hit on Friday. He also revealed that more than 500,000 British nationals have been in the path of the hurricane, and 997 British military personnel...

Hurricane Irma churned across the Atlantic Ocean in September 2017, battering several Caribbean islands before moving on to the Florida Keys and the U.S. mainland. As the clouds cleared over places like the Virgin Islands, the destruction became obvious even from space. These natural-color images, captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite, show some of Irma’s effect on the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. The views were acquired on August 25 and September 10, 2017, before and after the storm passed. They are among the few relatively cloud-free satellite images of the area so far....

Local curfews were in place throughout the state, much of the Florida Keys remained closed and millions of people continued to lack electricity as cleanup work expected to reach into the billions of dollars began Monday in the wake of deadly Hurricane Irma. While businesses slowly reopen, the state is dealing with widespread flooding, from storm surges of 4 to 8 feet along both coasts to flash flooding in Northeast Florida. Gov. Rick Scott, who flew over hard-hit areas Monday, said damage along the Southwest coast, where Irma made a second landfall Sunday, included roofs off homes, boats tossed, flooding...

With Hurricane Irma safely out of the state, most Floridians will be able to return home today - but it will be a uncomfortable homecoming because more than half the state is still without power. Electricity isn't just a convenience in the Sunshine State. It's a necessity in the summer when the heat can turn deadly hot. And that's just what it's forecast to do this week, with temperatures expected to reach into the 90s. Generally though, most Floridians were just happy they were finally able to return home after Irma displaced them into shelters and the homes of their...

As many as 800 tractor trailers loaded with relief supplies are at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery waiting to be deployed to Florida and Georgia as the areas brace for Hurricane Irma. Col. Eric K. Shafa, Commander of the 42nd Air Base Wing at Maxwell, said the installation is serving as staging area for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Tractor trailers began rolling into Maxwell yesterday and will be deployed, if needed, after the storm. The trucks contain supplies such as water, food, generators and cots. "This is a significant hurricane and our hearts and prayers go out to...

St.Thomas resident Mike Laplac on Monday said that looters are robbing residents using machetes and guns in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma pummeling the Caribbean island. “I actually know of eight people that were robbed in broad daylight with machetes for everything they had in their vehicles, including their fuel. Yesterday we spent about 3 ½ hours in a line for fuel, and machetes were pulled there as well.

FAJARDO, P.R. — Puerto Rico, dealt only a glancing blow by Hurricane Irma, has become an impromptu emergency hub for its Caribbean neighbors that were left devastated by the storm’s wrath. Puerto Ricans relieved at being spared the worst destruction donated water, clothing, first aid and other supplies, and dozens of recreational boaters sailed to nearby islands to deliver the assistance and evacuate now-homeless islanders on the return trip. A 54-foot dive boat named the Tobias cast off on Sunday morning from the marina here, the largest in the Caribbean, and made its way eastward under a searing sun to...
