CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A fire raging at an industrial facility caused multiple explosions that rocked suburban Detroit on Monday night and sent debris shooting far into the air, prompting police to implore residents to stay inside. The debris fell as far as a mile (1.6 kilometers) away, the Clinton Township Police Department said on Facebook. Authorities said they didn’t know exactly what was burning or the potential health effects from it. “We can not stress enough the danger that is happening right now,” one police post said. “Please, please, please stay inside and out of the vicinity.” Police said...

Most cancer screenings don’t ultimately give someone extra time beyond their regular lifespan, according to a new review of clinical trials involving more than 2.1 million people who had six kinds of common tests for cancer. But experts say this doesn’t mean you should cancel that colonoscopy or mammogram appointment. *** Depending on age, the American Cancer Society recommends regular screenings for breast cancer, cervical and colorectal cancer, and it recommends discussing screening for lung and prostate cancer with a doctor*** The strategy behind these recommendations is to catch cancer early enough — even before symptoms start — so that...

In my sub-40 years of existence, I’ve witnessed multiple market bubbles and collapses that in hindsight were predictable, but the warning signs of inevitable failure were obviously ignored. People disregard the few naysayers because their desire to be a part of an in-vogue fad outweighs any common sense.

Residents have been evacuated from homes as emergency services tackle a "significant" industrial blaze. About 20 appliances were at the scene after the fire service was called to Park Street, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, at about 14:50 BST. Police asked people to avoid the area while road closures were put in place. People were being advised to keep doors and windows closed, with a plume of smoke visible across the town. One woman, who lives on Wood Street near to the fire, told BBC Hereford and Worcester she and a number of other people had been evacuated from their homes. She said...

John Kerry, the US special envoy on climate, is predicting that the shift to a green economy would entail “a bigger economic transformation” than the Industrial Revolution, according to a report. “The fact is we’re looking at the creation of the largest market in the history of the world,” he said Monday, according to Fox Business. “This will be a bigger economic transformation that is right there at our disposal — bigger than the Industrial Revolution if we will start to seize it, and there are millions of jobs to be created,” Kerry said at an event with the European...

It’s no wonder he chose to skip the Iowa caucus, given that former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg apparently thinks farmers and manufacturers all across America lack “gray matter." In a clip just now circulating online, Bloomberg, while speaking at Oxford’s Said Business School back in 2016, explained that "anybody [can] be a farmer," but that it takes "a lot more gray matter" to "think and analyze" enough to work in the tech field. “I could teach anybody – even people in this room, no offense intended – to be a farmer,” Bloomberg explained. “It's a process. You dig a hole,...

Industrial shotguns have been in use for a very long time, however, this is a category of firearms that is mostly unknown to firearm enthusiasts. I decided to write this short article to tell about the industrial shotguns and their use on the example of currently produced 8 gauge Winchester industrial shotguns.Winchester “Ringblaster” Industrial Tool When you think about industrial guns you probably imagine a nail gun or something like that. That is arguably the most known alternative use of firearms. However, there are big bore industrial shotguns that are designed to be used in industries such as steel...

A new exhibition marking 300 years since the birth of canal pioneer James Brindley has opened. How did his work transform the English landscape and unlock a new era in the Industrial Revolution? When James Brindley sought Parliament's backing for his plan for an aqueduct over the River Irwell in Lancashire, he apparently employed a novel means of gaining their attention. Taking out a block of Cheshire cheese, the man who engineered England's first canal carved out a model of the waterway he hoped to build. "It's not clear if he cut it into pieces and put it in water...

U.S. industrial production fell more than expected in March as output declined broadly, the latest indication that economic growth braked sharply in the first quarter. Industrial output decreased 0.6 percent last month after a downwardly revised 0.6 percent drop in February, the Federal Reserve said on Friday. Industrial production has declined in six of the last seven months. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast industrial production slipping 0.1 percent last month after a previously reported 0.5 percent drop in February. Industrial production fell at an annual rate of 2.2 percent in the first quarter. The report joined data on retail...

The two men suspected of attacking a newspaper in Paris have stolen a car and reportedly have several hostages. A car chase is under way on the N2 motorway, and police sources say shots have been fired. The car is now on the outskirts of Paris - close to Charles de Gaulle airport - and several helicopters are reportedly hovering overhead. Sky's Ian Woods says the police focus now appears to have turned to an industrial building near to the airport. Two people with gunshot wounds have been taken to hospital in Meaux.

Pending home sales in the USA fell 5.6% in September, the biggest drop since 2010. phs102813 Of course, the rise in the US Treasury 10 year yield has cooled off pending home sales. phsmortgagesept13 Meanwhile, capacity utilization in the USA rose to 78.3%, shy of the point when The Fed has historically raises The Fed Funds Rate Target to cool down the economy. caputefed102813 Back in the Reagan Recovery in the 1980s and the Clinton Recovery in the 1990s, we saw capacity utilization rise above 80% signalling an over-heating economy. And The Fed reacted with increases in The Fed Funds...

As Professor John Taylor of Stanford University has observed, this is the slowest economic recovery since President Chester Arthur in 1882. Hence, I am not surprised that economic indicators struggle to increase to pre-recession levels. The National Association of Homebuilders Confidence Index rose to 41 in September from 40 in August. While this this is the highest reading since the end of the recession, it is still below the breakeven point of 50. Well, confidence could be attributed to the Fed’s mega-pushdown of mortgage rates. While one can say “It’s about time!” since the recession ended in June 2009, other...

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama issued an executive order on Thursday that would increase the number of cogeneration plants in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2020, a move that would boost U.S. industrial energy efficiency and slash carbon emissions by 150 million tons per year. The order is the administration's latest effort to deploy cleaner and more efficient energy production in the country by working around political resistance to climate change and "green" energy legislation on Capitol Hill. The measure aims to accelerate investments to help manufacturers expand their use of combined heat and power (CHP) facilities,

U.S. industrial production unexpectedly fell in May, with a slump in manufacturing activity providing another sign of concern for the economic recovery. Industrial production last month slipped 0.1%, the Federal Reserve said Friday. April's output figures were revised down slightly to a 1.0% gain, versus an initial estimate of a 1.1% jump.

AN IRANIAN nuclear facility has been hit by a huge explosion, the second such blast in a month, prompting speculation that Tehran's military and atomic sites are under attack. Satellite imagery seen by The Times confirmed that a blast that rocked the city of Isfahan on Monday struck the uranium enrichment facility there, despite denials by Tehran. The images clearly showed billowing smoke and destruction, negating Iranian claims yesterday that no such explosion had taken place. Israeli intelligence officials told The Times that there was "no doubt" that the blast struck the nuclear facilities at Isfahan and that it was...

A destructive myth has wrapped itself around laissez-faire capitalism. It is the erroneous notion that the free market harms the "vulnerable" within society; specifically, it is said to harm women and children by cruelly exploiting their labor. The opposite is true. Laissez-faire capitalism offers the one element that the vulnerable need most to survive and to advance: choice. The most liberating choice individuals can have is the ability to support themselves and not be dependent upon anyone else for the food going into their mouths. Using this myth as an entering assumption, historians have been extremely harsh in analyzing one...

The nation’s industrial production rose 0.2% in September, capping a third-quarter rebound in activity for the manufacturing sector, the Federal Reserve reported Monday. Though the headline gain was stronger than the 0.1% that economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast, August’s reading tracking output by factories, mines and utilities was downwardly revised to zero from an initially reported 0.2% growth.

U.S. industrial production rose 0.2% in August after a strong 0.9% gain in July. Production is now up in four straight months. Economists had expected no change in industrial output in August.. Capacity utilization increased 0.1 percentage point to 77.4% in August, the highest level since August 2008.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The output of the nation’s factories, mines and utilities surged 0.9% in July as auto assemblies rebounded and consumers turned on their air conditioners, the Federal Reserve said Tuesday. The gain, the biggest since last December, was in line with economists’ expectations. The key question is whether the increase can be sustained in future months. Output in June was revised up to a 0.4% gain from the prior estimate of a 0.2% gain and output in May was also revised higher.
