RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas - Every day students in Texas public schools pledge allegiance to the flags of the United States and Texas. But when a teacher in a Rio Grande Valley high school assigned students to stand and pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag and sing Mexico's national anthem, one student refused. The resulting controversy has one East Texas lawmaker wanting changes in the state's curriculum on how culture and patriotism are taught in schools. 15-year-old Brenda Brinsdon entered her sophomore year at McAllen ISD's Achieve Early College High School just wanting to do well in her classes.

The State Department’s support of a controversial oil-pipeline project is putting pressure on the White House to move forward after three years, despite objections from environmentalists. A series of public hearings concludes Friday on the Keystone XL pipeline, which would run from Canada’s oil sands in Alberta down through America’s midsection to the Texas Gulf Coast. So far, the State Department has published reports in favor of the project, which is projected to create 20,000 jobs and reduce the nation’s dependence on overseas oil.

What do the federal interstate highway system, the Golden Gate Bridge and D-FW International Airport all have in common? All are indispensable projects safely transporting millions of families and tons of products every year. All also were bitterly attacked and criticized during their planning and construction phases. Today, our state transportation system is at a crossroads. Texas is the leading exporting state, the second biggest manufacturing state, and has added more than 600,000 jobs in the past 34 months. Annually, Texans spend 3.7 billion hours sitting in traffic. Unless we change, it will only get worse. During the next 25...

When a currency loses the confidence of its people, its fall becomes exponential, as has happened to the Zimbabwe $, where in 1982 one U.S.$ equalled 1 Zimbabwe $. Today around Z$200,000 buys one U.S. $ if you can find someone idiot enough to sell one for the Z$. In day-to-day terms, the smallest note in Zimbabwe a Z$500 is the size of a U.S.$. The price of a single-ply sheet of toilet paper is more expensive at around Z$867. The U.S.$ is nowhere near there, but clearly the U.S. Administration has no plan or even desire to rectify the...
