MSNBC’s Chris Hayes is thrilled beyond belief that New York and New Jersey experienced bombings over the weekends. His rationale? At least they didn’t use guns. Can you believe someone could be so stupid to say something like that? How does this child hold down a steady job? Even for a liberal network, it’s ridiculous they allow this sort of thing. I’m not mincing words, either. Read his tweets.

WASHINGTON Residue from an explosive compound found at the scene of an explosion in a New York City neighborhood is unregulated and routinely used for target practice with exploding targets. The compound, known by the brand name Tannerite, is sold in sporting goods stores. It is not regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives because it is sold as a mix of two chemicals that when kept separate are inert.

"The New York City Police Department said the explosion in Chelsea Saturday night that injured dozens of people was "definitely" a bomb, with components indicative of an IED being found at the blast site." NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said investigators are working to determine the motivation behind the bombing and find out who did it. He described the multi-agency effort as a "very complex post-blast investigation." "We definitely had a bombing last night on 23rd Street and we had a suspicious device on 27th Street," O'Neill said.

Little scant coverage has been given to the story of doctor Mark Samir Sawaf. He was a LPCC Psychotherapist in Kentucky USA. This was his public image. The man wearing all black is initially seen in the security footage from June 18 blending in like any other shopper. But, authorities say, he didn’t come to the store to shop, but to build a chemical weapon. “This is a very bizarre case,” said Eric Sonstegard, the Oxnard Assistant Police Chief. Detectives identified the suspect as Martin Reyes. They say he went to the store after conducting research online on how to build a deadly chemical weapon. Once inside the store, police said the man assembled all of the ingredients from store shelves, which included some kind of electronic...

On the afternoon of March 12, 2014, Jennifer Collins checked her phone and found a message from her husband, Dave Collins, a retired Navy SEAL. He’d texted to say that she should pick up their son from kindergarten, and then this: “So sorry baby. I love you all.” Hours later, two police officers showed up at their house in Virginia Beach with news that Dave, 45, had shot himself in his truck a few miles away. Although Jennifer had held out hope for any other explanation, she also knew the moment she read it what the text meant. For months,...

This was originally written for Deadspin's Blood Week, but shit happens and we're running it now. A 20-pound jug of homemade explosives will take off one or both legs somewhere between the knee and hip, perhaps breaking the pelvis and shattering vertebrae as the shockwave travels up through the skeleton. After our first Marine was wounded this way—let's call him Patient Zero—he was stabilized by his squad's hospital corpsman and flown to the trauma center, a British base that abuts Camp Leatherneck, the hub for Marine operations in southwest Afghanistan. At the time I was running a forward combat aid...

Though some in law enforcement are concerned about the potential for an attack, other terror experts downplayed the risk. “It has not been in the jihadists’ playbook,†said Brian Jenkins, a senior adviser at Rand Corp. and a top official with Mineta Transportation Institute. Therein lies the problem. Jihadists are not going to repeat the same attacks in the same way. There strategy is not to do that. The idea that this is not a threat because they haven’t done it before is beyond stupid. And if this is the thinking we can expect from intel agencies, we are doomed....

Where’s Matty? On July 20, 2013, Spc. Brent Grommet returned from Afghanistan with his military working dog, a Czech German shepherd named Matty. The two had gone through basic training together, deployed together and were injured together when a roadside IED detonated. Grommet slept on top of Matty’s crate as they flew back to the United States. Upon landing at an Air Force base in New Jersey, the two were separated — standard operating procedure. Grommet wasn’t worried, though: According to Army regulations, if he wanted Matty, he had the sole right to adopt his military working dog. This right...

The new three-tiered detection system is mounted onto the front of armored vehicles and possibly eliminates the greatest threat ground forces have faced in recent years. The IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries) has unveiled the latest defense against the threat facing armored vehicles from Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and mines—a large rectangular multi-sensor system that is placed on the front of an armored vehicle, which can detect and then destroy hidden explosive devices from long distances. The CIMS (Counter IED and Mine Suite), which was first unveiled in a US Army exhibition last week in Washington, DC, has three main components:...
