Its been 56 years and yet just the sound of these birds can get the adrenaline going and the pulse quickening. Slick driversIf you've never sat on the floor of a Huey holding on to the pilot seat frame as your slick was running balls out a hundred feet above the jungle headed into a hot firefight, door guns, mini guns and rocket pods blazing. Well, then at 18 years old you just never experienced one of the most intense adrenaline dumping events in your short life.

Six people died on Wednesday when a tourist helicopter used in Hollywood movies crashed in West Virginia during a vintage helicopter show where guests without pilot licenses were allowed to fly the aircraft. The Vietnam-era helicopter, which had previously appeared in movies including Baywatch, Die Hard and Outbreak, was being flown during the 7th Annual Huey Reunion, an event for historical aviation enthusiasts. Guests at the event, hosted at the Marpat Aviation school in Logan county, could pay to fly the helicopter for $250 for a 30-minute session even without having a license, according to the event page. The helicopter,...

An Air Force helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at a Virginia airport Monday after someone shot at it, injuring a member of the crew, local and military officials told McClatchy. The UH-1N Huey helicopter is assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron at Joint Base Andrews and had been on a routine training flight, the base said in a statement. The injured crew member, who was not identified, was treated at a hospital and released. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.

The FBI is investigating the incident, involving a helicopter assigned to President Donald Trump’s support detail. The UH-1N Huey helicopter, assigned to Joint Base Andrews just outside of Washington, D.C., was conducting a routine training flight roughly 1,000 feet above the ground before it was forced to make an emergency landing at an airport in nearby Manassas, Virginia, after being struck by a bullet, an Air Force spokesperson tells U.S. News. The helicopter is assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron, which supports the movement of the president and other senior government officials to and from Andrews, where Air Force One...

  • Latest Bell UH-1Y "Venom" Variant Of The Iconic Huey Finds An Export Customer

    The Drive ^ | OCTOBER 25, 2017 | TYLER ROGOWAY
Nearly 61 years to the day since its first flight, the legendary UH-1 is still being exported to militaries abroad. Of course the newest variant of the UH-1, the UH-1Y "Venom," is very much a different helicopter than its grandfather, having far more in common with the more modern but still dated Twin Huey Super Cobra. Nonetheless, with the news that the US Government approved the sale of UH-1Ys to the Czech Republic, it's safe to say that Hueys are still in demand in an age when the field of light to medium militarized utility helicopters is crowded to say...

Bell Helicopters' upgraded H-1 generates foreign interest (Reuters) - As U.S. budget pressures mount, the U.S. Marine Corps says growing foreign demand could help drive down the unit cost of its new upgraded H-1 utility and attack helicopters built by Bell Helicopter, a unit of Textron Inc (TXT.N). Major General John Croley, assistant deputy commandant for aviation, said the new helicopters had greater range and capabilities that would enhance the Marines' ability to work with allies across the Asia-Pacific region. He said increased interest from countries in Asia and the Middle East could help lower the cost of the new...

Musings of a helo driver... Anything that screws its way into the sky flies according to unnatural principals. You never want to sneak up behind an old, high-time helicopter pilot and clap your hands. He will instantly dive for cover and most likely whimper...then get up and smack you. There are no old helicopters laying around airports like you see old airplanes. There is a reason for this. Come to think of it, there are not many old, high-time helicopter pilots hanging around airports either so the first issue is problematic. You can always tell a helicopter pilot in anything...

How optimistic should Republicans be about tomorrow’s special election in California’s 36th House district? The good news is that GOP challenger Craig Huey — who wasn’t even expected to make the runoff — has a fighting chance against Democratic Los Angeles city councilwoman Janice Hahn. Washington Republicans think Democrats are getting nervous, the turnout numbers for Republicans and Democrats in the early vote are surprisingly even, and the fundraising numbers were also surprisingly even at the end of June. All of this is occurring in a district that scores D+12 in the Cook Partisan Voting Index, that Obama carried with...

OUTRAGE: HAHN CAMPAIGN USED WW2 HERO'S NAME AND PICTURES WITHOUT PERMISSION! The Janice Hahn campaign has sunk to new lows! In a desperate last minute mail drop that hit residents over the weekend attempting to mislead voters and give them the impression that Hahn received an endorsement from a well known local WW2 veteran. The claim was a complete lie, the veteran in question never endorsed Hahn and the use of his pictures was unauthorized. Representatives issued the following statement making it clear that Hahn did NOT have his support!  "The Hahn campaign has been told repeatedly, both verbally and via email, that Louis Zamperini does not wish to endorse...

If you thought Scott Brown taking the late Ted Kennedy’s senate seat in Massachusetts was the biggest political upset you would ever see, you could be wrong, as a Republican is making strong strides to represent Venice Beach. Democrats often roll up landslide victories for their candidates in coastal California, especially in the 36th Congressional District, which runs from the famous Venice boardwalk through the beaches south of Los Angeles International Airport. In a season of turbulent politics, a little-noticed runoff election Tuesday for the House seat vacated by former Democratic Rep. Jane Harman has become unusually competitive. Supporters for...
