Not long after a museum opened on the former Nazi party rally grounds at Nuremberg, locals began turning up in sheepish dribs and drabs with Third Reich memorabilia that had been kept in their families for generations. Over time the collection grew to thousands of books, including numerous copies of Mein Kampf, and hundreds of knick-knacks and relics, ranging from Adolf Hitler action figures to SS dress daggers and a cast-iron eagle with a 10ft wingspan. Now the curators must work out what on earth to do with it all. The Documentation Centre, housed in the north wing of the...

The link to NY Times archives I used for this post goes to the editorial on page 5. Jan. 22, 1862 is not entered properly in the NYT index, so I couldn’t link to the lead story-HJS. The loyal sentiment of all the border Southern States will be greatly strengthened by the victory on the Cumberland. Its influence will extend to Tennessee, North Carolina and Eastern Virginia. It may even find a response from Louisiana and her commercial metropolis, whose trade relations with the Upper Valley of the Mississippi were madly and wickedly suspended last Winter to the behests of...

Senate Democrats say they share President Biden’s concern that the results of the 2022 midterm elections may not be legitimate because of restrictive voting laws passed by GOP-controlled state legislatures and the empowerment of state-level officials allied with former President Trump. But the senators are torn over how hard to push a stolen-election narrative ahead of the November election in which Republicans are expected to make big gains in Congress. While Democratic lawmakers are worried that Republican state officials are seeking to suppress Democratic votes, some are leery of sounding like Trump, who made predictions of widespread election fraud before...

A record collector has unearthed a super-rare commentary of an Old Firm match dating back to 1907. Shane Quentin was stunned to discover the record in a box of discs he bought at an auction for just six pounds. The 59-year-old, from Carnoustie, has now sent the record to experts to clean up and produce a top notch copy. At present the sound quality is poor and only a few words can be made out. The 'International Zonophone Company' recording is of comedian, Jock Whiteford, getting excited describing a Rangers v Celtic derby back in 1907 with crowd noises in...

In a quest to map out a quantum theory of gravity, researchers have used logical rules to calculate how much Einstein’s theory must change. The result matches string theory perfectly. 4 ========================================================================== Quantum gravity researchers use α to denote the size of the biggest quantum correction to Einstein’s general relativity. Recently, three physicists calculated a number pertaining to the quantum nature of gravity. When they saw the value, “we couldn’t believe it,” said Pedro Vieira, one of the three. Gravity’s quantum-scale details are not something physicists usually know how to quantify, but the trio attacked the problem using an approach...

https://youtu.be/La1s0aamtnc What is potentially the world's largest potato is to be given a DNA test to determine if it's actually a potato. Colin and Donna Craig-Brown – a couple from near Hamilton, New Zealand – found an absolute unit of a potato (please note that for ease, we are calling it a potato rather than "alleged potato") in their vegetable garden last August. The potato, which they have named Dug, weighed a whopping 7.8 kilograms (17.2 pounds), making it a contender for the largest spud in the world. “We unearthed this hunk of tuber, and we thought to ourselves, ‘what...

The Roman Space Telescope is a NASA observatory designed to unravel the secrets of dark energy and dark matter, search for and image exoplanets, and explore many topics in infrared astrophysics. Credit: NASA A team of astrophysicists has created a simulated image that shows how the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope could conduct a mega-exposure similar to but far larger than Hubble’s celebrated Ultra Deep Field Image. This Hubble observation transformed our view of the early universe, revealing galaxies that formed just a few hundred million years after the big bang. “Roman has the unique ability to image very large...

The weather stole the headlines in Florida 45 years ago with a startling feat that has not been repeated to this day. On the morning of Jan. 19, 1977, something very unusual happened in South Florida: It snowed. Residents grabbed their film cameras to document the unusual event, and newspapers ran headlines in the biggest font they could muster. The Miami News even issued a special souvenir edition titled "The day that couldn’t happen: Snow in Miami!"

The home, which sits on 3.6 acres, is currently listed at $85 million. Located at Cielo Drive, Franklin first purchased the property for $6 million “roughly two decades ago” when it contained only a partially finished mansion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Franklin moved in after fixing up the estate in 2007, and has since said that the property’s past has had “no impact on my life whatsoever,” the outlet reported. A previous home on the same property — located at 10050 Cielo Drive — was the site of the Manson Family’s gruesome murders of Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring,...

UAB announces first clinical-grade transplant of gene-edited pig kidneys into brain-dead human. The study was designed and conducted to meet standards directly comparable to those that would apply to a Phase I clinical trial and mirrored — as much as possible — every step of a conventional transplant between humans. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine announces today the first peer-reviewed research outlining the successful transplant of genetically modified, clinical-grade pig kidneys into a brain-dead human individual, replacing the recipient’s native kidneys. These positive results demonstrate how xenotransplantation could address the worldwide organ shortage...

A set of lengthy silver and gold tubes dug up from a famous grave in the the Caucuses have been found to represent the oldest surviving drinking straws, with the scientists behind the discovery believing they were used for communal beer consumption. The specimens are 5,000 years old and help deepen our understanding of drinking culture in ancient hierarchical societies. The set of eight tubes was unearthed back in 1987 in the Maikop Kurgan burial mound, a famous grave for Bronze Age elites in the Northern Caucasus. Researchers had since concluded the meter-plus-long tubes to be poles for a canopy,...

WASHINGTON, Sunday, Jan. 19. The Potter Committee, appointed by the House to investigate the fidelity, of clerks and other employes of the Government about Washington, have suspended their labors and are preparing their report. It will be very long, and must create much excitement in the country, as the Committee have some to the conclusion that at least five hundred persons employed in the Departments here are disloyal to the Government, and would rejoice to see JEFF. DAVIS in possession of Washington. The report will be very severe upon Mr. SMITH, Secretary of the Interior, showing that JACOB THOMPSON's old...
