The loyal sentiment of all the border Southern States will be greatly strengthened by the victory on the Cumberland. Its influence will extend to Tennessee, North Carolina and Eastern Virginia. It may even find a response from Louisiana and her commercial metropolis, whose trade relations with the Upper Valley of the Mississippi were madly and wickedly suspended last Winter to the behests of the Cotton rebellion. The truth is, that Louisiana had as little heart in the first movement of secession as Tennessee or North Carolina. The Northwestern States, now in arms for the Constitution and the Union, as well as Kentucky and Missouri, were tributary to her commerce. For more than fifty years Ohio and Kentucky had been building up New-Orleans, and when the growth of Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, and the immense surplus products which they were enabled to market, were added, the strides of that city to commercial greatness were rapid and in every sense surprising beyond precedent. We do no violence to probability, therefore, in saying that Louisiana must feel that the victory already won, and the battles yet to be fought in the same quarter, are so many blows to unshackle her own trade and prosperity -- to give to New-Orleans the busy life it was wont to enjoy mainly through the custom of the Upper Valley, and to her sugar interest the profitable markets, which, until recently, it almost monopolized.
