WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nearly 4 million Americans will have to pay a penalty if they fail to get health insurance when that element of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law kicks in, according to congressional projections released Thursday.

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said Monday he thinks House Democratic leaders are not close to having the votes to pass health reform. In an interview with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren, the anti-abortion rights lawmaker said, "I'd be surprised if they have 200 votes." House Democratic leaders need 216 to pass the bill. Stupak noted that he is not counting votes with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her lieutenants, calling his figure "a guesstimate." Democratic leaders have a very different vote count, claiming they have, or are very close, to having the votes to pass a bill. Stupak and other...

Mississippian's challenge to opponents to burn their cards called 'very cynical'/B> Oppose a government health care plan? A Jackson, Miss., doctor wants you to put your convictions on the line by burning your mother's Medicare card. It's the reverse of the challenge many citizens have been issuing to their own members of Congress to forgo the health care plans they get by dint of working for the government and buy into the "public option" plan instead. "I want to have a demonstration - Boston Tea Party-like - and burn those cards," said Dr. Aaron Shirley, who has done extensive work...
  • Singapore's Health Care System: A Free Lunch You Can Sink Your Teeth Into

In The Undercover Economist, Tim Harford highly praised the health care policies of Singapore. But it wasn't until I read the section on health care in Ghesquiere's Singapore's Success that I realized how amazing the official numbers are. If the following is true, all the comparisons showing that the U.S. greatly outspends Europe without getting better health are beside the point, because Singapore makes Europe look like the U.S.: The Singapore government spent only 1.3 percent of GDP on healthcare in 2002, whereas the combined public and private expenditure on healthcare amounted to a low 4.3 percent of GDP. By...

I have it on very good authority that this past weekend, in Charleston, there was a panel/forum to discuss health care, including "Medical Breakthroughs Which Will Alter Our Lives", "Avoiding, Identifying, Reversing, and Surviving Heart Disease", and a four-hour forum, "Costs and Consequences of Health Care Reform Alternates." Bill Clinton attended a small portion of the four-hour forum, and Ann Lewis, Hillary's campaign manager, did, as well. It is obvious to me that Hillary does, indeed, plan on running, and that she is determined to push a nationalized health care plan through.
