FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 14, 2010 CONTACT: DC Press Office, (202) 224-4159 BOSTON - Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet, today commented on efforts by the telecommunications industry in providing communications expertise, equipment and manpower to earthquake ravaged Haiti, as well as on the industry's massive fundraising effort which made Wednesday the biggest day in history for mobile phone generated charity. Facebook and Twitter are also serving as a tool for giving. "Last night at a community meeting on this awful earthquake, I heard story after story of people who can't reach...

It is excruciating to see the images of human suffering emanating from Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. Prayers and practical compassionate care is truly needed. But sometimes things are said in the midst of crises that exacerbate the already raw feelings of grieving people. So then what's all the fuss about Pat Robertson's remarks? I first knew something was up while driving yesterday. I heard two national conservative talk radio personalities make some disparaging remarks about Pat Robertson, who, by the way, is one of the reasons they even have jobs. Pat was one of the most...

More on the "curse" Thanks, Rob, for that link to the post on Pat Robertson at Get Religion. It does, as you say, provide useful context---context that the author rightly says should be mentioned by people reporting Rev. Robertson's remarks.I do not know if others who have viewed the video clip perceive it as I do, but among the things that struck me was Robertson's evident sincerity. In this case, at least, I don't think he was being a showman. He seems to really believe in the "curse" and the legend of the "pact with the devil." Moreover, I didn't...

January 14, 2010 1:32 PM Rush Limbaugh Slams Obama's Response to Haiti Earthquake Stephanie Condon (AP Photo)In the face of utter devastation across Haiti following a huge earthquake, conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh took to the airwaves yesterday to blast President Obama for his response to the crisis. The disaster enables Mr. Obama to highlight his "compassionate" and "humanitarian" credentials and to "boost his credibility with the black community," Limbaugh said. He also decried the White House's promotion of charitable organizations through which people can contribute to the disaster relief. "We've already donated to Haiti," he said. "It's called...

Haiti has been dealt a crippling blow, with the recent earthquake destroying and devastating practically the entire capitol of Port Au Prince. We can all pray for the Haitians and that they are able to survive, and perhaps even use this event as a springboard to free themselves from the generations of corrupt Marxist welfare-state rule that has caused even more suffering than the earthquake...

Here is video of CBS News reporter Jeff Glor in Haiti where he talked with victims and showed some of the hardest hit areas of Port-Au-Prince. Glor followed a family into their damaged home and while he was talking with her, a tremor took place that sent them all running back out into the street. Glor also shows the scene outside a hospital where many of the wounded are lying in the street with no help. He then appeared in a live shot with CBS Anchor Katie Couric. Glor continued to talk with Couric standing beside him. Couric never said...

Watching the ongoing relief efforst on TV, it is frustrating to know that people deserately need the basics and will probably not get them for days. The officials are offloading everything at the airport andit is stacking up. I am no expert, but IMO we need to be doing a 2 pronged approach to this disaster, and airstyle-type drop of World War II combined with the precise relief we are seeing set up on television. But why they are not doing the airdrops is beyond me. The peeople need the basics such as water and crackers and these could beeasily...

The US is sending up to 3,500 soldiers and 2,200 marines to Haiti to help rescue efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake. President Barack Obama pledged one of the biggest relief efforts in recent US history and said Haiti would "not be forgotten" in its hour of need. The search for survivors continues but rescuers lack heavy lifting equipment and many are using their bare hands. The Red Cross estimates 45,000-50,000 people are dead and up to 3m affected. BBC correspondents say the situation is increasingly desperate, with aid only trickling in. Mr Obama confirmed that some US...

Led by the Democratic party front group Media Matters which issued a posting headlined "We've already donated to Haiti, it's called the U.S. income tax", the media is smearing Rush Limbaugh with a despicable lie accusing Rush of telling his listeners to not donate to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.Rush was warning listeners of being taken in by the Obama administration by going to WhiteHouse.gov, as Obama instructed, to make donations to Haiti earthquake relief. He was concerned the donations made there would go to the Obama administration. It was that concern that prompted his remark that has been taken out...

When it comes to natural disasters, Haiti seems to have a bull's-eye on it. That's because of a killer combination of geography, poverty, social problems, slipshod building standards and bad luck, experts say. The list of catastrophes is mind-numbing: This week's devastating earthquake. Four tropical storms or hurricanes that killed about 800 people in 2008. Killer storms in 2005 and 2004. Floods in 2007, 2006, 2003 (twice) and 2002. And that's just the 21st Century run-down. "If you want to put the worst case scenario together in the Western hemisphere (for disasters), it's Haiti," said Richard Olson, a professor at...

I dont know if this has been posted..... As a Katrina survivor I will tell you that the Red Cross and The Salvation Army were heros... You can text the word Haiti to 90999 to donate $10.00 to the relief efforts. I intend to donate much more than this but I found this to be a very convenient way to do something.
