Whether or not this proves to be the “Age of Obama,” no one who has a financial interest in the outcome of the election -- as does PBS’ Gwen Ifill -- should be permitted to moderate any debate in the campaign season. Vice-Presidential Debate Moderator Gwen Ifill questioned whether Sarah Palin could balance being Vice-President with being a Mom only a few days after Palin's selection as John McCain's running mate. Ifill asked her guest if Palin had been "fully vetted," as if there was no way she could have been since she was chosen. It is beyond belief that this person will moderate the debate, given her clear bias against Palin and her vested financial interest in seeing Barack Obama win the election since she has a pro-Obama book slated for release on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009. . . ....

...confirmed for us here on GretaWire: the McCain campaign did NOT know about Gwen Ifill’s book (I think I told them when I made my efforts - emails about midnight - to find out!) I am stunned….the campaign (actually both) should have been told before the campaign agreed to have her moderate. It simply is not fair - in law, this would create a mistrial.

There's one good reason Gwen Ifill, the host of the PBS show Washington Week, is moderating the vice-presidential debate: she has a forthcoming book about Barack Obama (and other black Democrats) called The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. Ifill presents Obama and the others as the idealistic successors of Martin Luther King: "This book is about a generation of people who took seriously the achievements that their parents fought for. Gwen Ifill, the moderator of Thursday’s debate between Alaska Governor Palin and Senator Biden has a new book scheduled to come out on Inauguaration day January 20th: The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.

Ifill is working on a book called Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, focusing on the Democratic nominee and such up-and-coming black politicians as Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.
