Mosquitoes could be the sole species to be benefitting from climate change, as the warmer and wetter weather that comes with global warming makes for their ideal environment. Thanks to this, the insects are growing bigger and living longer, increasing their ability to pick up and spread potentially deadly diseases. Bites from the blood-sucking bugs are more than just an annoyance – different species can carry infectious diseases including dengue fever, Zika virus, yellow fever, chikungunya virus, malaria, and West Nile virus that they pick up from one person and pass it on to the next. Mosquito-borne disease experts are...

In the coming weeks, a Giant Food market in D.C. will clear its beauty and health aisles of all national labels. No more Tide, Colgate or Advil, only store brands. Shoppers also will have to present their receipts to an employee before exiting the store. It’s the regional supermarket chain’s most overt gambit against the rampant theft that’s plaguing retailers of all sizes. It’s also a potential last-ditch effort to avoid shutting down the unprofitable store on Alabama Avenue — the only major grocer east of the Anacostia River in Ward 8. “We want to continue to be able to...

One grocery chain is fighting hard to keep stores open despite rampant shoplifting and an uptick in violence forcing many retailers to leave major cities across the country. Giant Food, which operates 165 supermarkets in D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Delaware, has taken multiple measures to combat theft and keep stores safe, according to a report in The Washington Post. That includes limiting store entrances; hiring security guards; restricting the number of items at self-checkout stands; putting less high-value items on shelves; and securing razor blades in containers that make noise if opened. Company president Ira Kress said he's seen theft...

A local hospital in northern Ghana told 29-year-old Sulemana Abdul Samed during one of his recent check-ups that he had reached the height of 9 ft 6in (2.89m). This would make him the tallest man in the world, but there was a catch - the rural clinic could not be sure of his height because it did not have the correct measuring tools. But Awuche does not let his problems get him down. He is full of soul as his tall slim frame weaves through the dusty paths of the village - smiling as people call out to him. ...Some...

A Giant grocery chain location in Northeast Washington, D.C. — roughly one mile from the United States Capitol — was among the latest to be hit by apparently brazen thieves who quickly yet calmly empty shelves into carts and plastic bags before apparently making their way through the door without paying. It was the kind of scene Democrats try to brush off or say is blown out of proportion, but one that is now hitting a neighborhood in which several of them stay while doing business at the Capitol. The video tweeted out in Tuesday's early afternoon hours shows a...

Rumours have been circulating for years that the American military killed a creature which was “three times” the size of a normal man. The beast was supposedly shot dead after taking “multiple hits” in the Kandahar region when troops were looking for a missing patrol. This outlandish claim, which has been denied by the US administration, has recently resurfaced on social media. It was first featured in a YouTube documentary produced by filmmaker and blogger L.A. Marzulli that was released two years ago. Two self-proclaimed ex-special ops soldiers recalled the encounter with a a supposed mythical monster. They alleged that...
