WASHINGTON — The nation's largest law enforcement organization chastised President Barack Obama Thursday for saying the Cambridge, Mass., police "acted stupidly" for arresting prominent African-American scholar Henry Louis Gates at his home last week. The criticism by the 325,000-member Fraternal Order of Police came as White House officials tried to clarify Obama's caustic characterization of Cambridge police's handling of the Gates situation during a prime-time televised news conference Wednesday. Chuck Canterbury, the FOP's national president, said Obama's comments were "made without the facts" and "do little to narrow the void of distrust that too often separates the community from the...

The criticism comes after Obama said Cambridge police officers acted "stupidly" when they arrested Henry Louis Gates, a friend of the president's, after he broke into his own home. Gates was arrested on disorderly conduct charges, which were then dropped. The president said it highlights ongoing problems with race relations in the U.S. Jim Pascoe, executive director of the FOP's legislative office, noted that before Obama made the remarks, the president acknowledged that he was only vaguely familiar with what...

A 4-year-old boy in Watertown, N.Y., is growing an extra skeleton due to a rare genetic condition, the Watertown Daily Times reported Thursday. May 19, 2007 -- Anti-gun New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) is at it again. A recent New York Post article detailed how, at a breakfast sponsored by Ladies Home Journal, he took a swipe at the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) for its support of the Tiahrt Amendment, which prohibits the disclosure of confidential firearm trace data except in the course of a bona fide criminal investigation. "It is one fringe organization," charged Bloomberg. MEEHAN-SHAYS AMENDMENT DEFEATED! Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday questioned a Kansas television station's refusal to air an advertisement that is part of his antigun campaign. "I think if I were CBS I'd call this local station and say what on earth were you thinking about? You can't censor this kind of ad, if you don't agree with the opinion," Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show. The ad features a Minnesota police chief who says federal legislation is keeping him from getting information about where guns in his community are coming from and who is buying them. CBS affiliate KWCH of Wichita said...

Police group wants McKinney scuffle probed By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer 10 minutes ago Police labor officials, angry over a federal grand jury's refusal to indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney for assaulting a police officer, said Monday said they want the House ethics committee to review her conduct. And they said the grand jury's decision last week sent the message that "it's okay to hit a police officer." "We hope that members of Congress will review her actions in light of their rules within their own ethics committee," Andrew Maybo, chairman of the U.S. Capitol Police Labor Committee, told reporters...

A high-ranking official at the National Fraternal Order of Police cited the mishandling of Rep. Patrick Kennedy's (D-R.I.) car accident Thursday as just one more example of problems the Capitol Police Department is experiencing since Chief Terrance Gainer retired. Jim Pasco, executive director of the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), said the fact that no investigation was conducted after Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I) crashed his car into a security barrier at C and First Street SE was unacceptable but symptomatic of the way the Capitol Police Department is being run after Gainer's departure on April 6.Gainer retired after charges...

WASHINGTON — Rep. Cynthia McKinney on Friday declared herself the victim of a racist Capitol Hill police officer who her supporters said used excessive force when he stopped her from skirting a security checkpoint earlier this week. "The whole incident was instigated by the inappropriate touching and stopping of me — a female, black congresswoman," McKinney said at a news conference, abandoning the apologetic tone she struck earlier in the week. Capitol police are considering filing assault charges against the DeKalb County Democrat next week. But her lawyers said she was acting in self-defense when she struck the officer who...
