A Pennsylvania police chief said housekeeping efforts to clear storage space will not affect a Thompson submachine gun reputedly bought to fight John Dillinger. Sharon Police Chief Mike Menster said the announced project to get rid of some old records to free up storage space will not mean the sale of the .45-caliber Thompson submachine gun, which local legend holds was purchased for the department by a bank to dissuade Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger and his gang from robbing banks in the area, the Sharon Herald reported Thursday. "The legend is that Dillinger was robbing banks in this area in...

CHICAGO - A Chicago businessman was the $3,000 high bidder for a mold of John Dillinger's face made after the notorious gangster's death. Ed Hirschland bought Dillinger's "death mask" Thursday for $3,000, plus $660 in fees, at an auction featuring 65 pieces of Chicago history at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday. "I'm a Chicago aficionado," Hirschland said. "One of the areas that's so interesting about Chicago is crime. This is such an incredible crime item." The plaster cast of Dillinger's face was made by Kenneth "Doc" Coffman, who got past guards at the morgue to make the...

It was one of those rare confluences in history where the notable and notorious reach critical mass and all manage to bump into one another. It happened when Dorothy Parker, Robert Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman and others coalesced at the Algonquin Round Table; times were right for Werner Heisenberg, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr and other great brains in Europe to meet and create modern physics; and so with Machine Gun Kelly, Ma Barker, Bonnie & Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, Dillinger. These Midwest kidnappers and bank robbers—or yeggs—flourished during the same brief time. These underworld entities kept...

This was June 1934, near the end for the notorious criminal. Dillinger was hiding out in Chicago. Two months earlier, he'd escaped an FBI raid at the Little Bohemia resort in northern Wisconsin. His gang's girlfriends had been brought to jail in Madison. Now in Chicago, Dillinger, his accomplice Homer Van Meter, who'd been with him at Little Bohemia, and Louis Piquett, Dillinger's attorney, were pondering alternative revenue streams.Piquett, born and raised in Benton, a small...

On This Day In History July 22, 1934 John Dillinger Gunned Down By FBI During the 1930s Depression, many Americans, nearly helpless against forces they didn't understand, made heroes of outlaws who took what they wanted at gunpoint. Dillinger, whose name once dominated the headlines, was a notorious and vicious thief. From September, 1933, until July, 1934, he and his violent gang terrorized the Midwest, killing 10 men, wounding 7 others, robbing...
