Columbia native William Phillippe was drawn to the West Coast through military service and a steady job after he graduated from Hickman High School in 1938. He moved back to his hometown in 1988 and in 1992 married Rea Phillippe. The two played in a folk-country band called Yours Truly a few times a month. William Phillippe strummed the guitar; his wife played keyboard. “He was the best guitar picker and singer that ever was, I think,” Rea Phillippe said. In August 2003, a blood clot caused William Phillippe to suddenly die. But somehow, according to a state database created...

Earlier this month, someone leaked details of an unpublished "preliminary" report commissioned by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to USA Today that disputed the widespread belief that voter fraud is rampant in some areas of the country: There "is widespread but not unanimous agreement that there is little polling-place fraud, or at least much less than is claimed, including voter impersonation, 'dead' voters, non-citizen voting and felon voters." The key phrase is "not unanimous." Various people who reviewed the report differed on its accuracy, USA Today reports:Jon Greenbaum of the liberal Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law says it...

AHSA HIDES FUNDING SOURCE Fairfax, VA-There is a last minute effort in Missouri by a new pro-gun control group camouflaging itself as a pro-hunter organization to try to deceive Missouri voters. The group, running a last minute advertising campaign, is hiding its source of funding, but leaders of the group have contributed to anti-hunting politicians’ campaigns in Congress. The leadership of the fly-by-night group, known as the American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA), contributed money to candidates backed by Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). HSUS must not be confused with local humane, animal welfare groups. HSUS is an...

A number of metro area people were not too happy Thursday evening after discovering their names and addresses printed in a local paper. The Tennessee Tribune published hundreds of names and addresses of people who did not vote in the August primary, the last election. Silas Allen, 65, said it came as a shock. He had no idea his name was printed in the weekly paper that focuses on issues in the African-American community. He wasn't too pleased.

Mayor Bill White today ordered a halt to a privately funded drive to offer flu vaccinations at early voting sites in Hispanic and black neighborhoods, amid conservative criticism that the effort would boost Democratic votes. Since Monday, the city had been offering the free vaccinations at four polling places around Houston under a national grant program, used in more than 20 other cities. White defended the program at a news conference today, saying public health was the city's only motive in launching the initiative. Still, he said he decided this morning to abandon the plan after today to avoid perception...
