Cook County lost more people between 2000 and 2005 than any county in the nation, according to Census Bureau estimates released Thursday that also show continued gains in suburban and exurban counties across the region and portions of the nation. The new figures--based on administrative records and estimates for births, deaths and net migration--show the county lost more than 73,000 people, or 1.4 percent, since the last official count in April 2000. The largest-loser designation can partly be attributed to Cook County's massive size, because raw numbers were used for the rankings. Still, among the nation's 10 largest counties, Cook,...

Cobbeldick aims his sights on town's top office Thursday, August 04, 2005 By CAROLYN STEIGMAN BAY VILLAGE _ If Bruce Cobbeldick isn't elected mayor of Bay Village in November, it won't be for lack of trying. He has been campaigning at a feverish pace since first announcing his plan to run for the position in March 2004. No one goes door to door like me, tries this hard to be accessible to people, or takes the initiative to have Web sites and campaign headquarters in place for the convenience of citizens, Cobbeldick said. What other candidate has rented out the...

  • Who Designed This Ballot? (Ohio ballot has Bush incorrectly aligned with arrow) [fraud!]

More trouble brewing in Ohio: Reader Evan Rogers sent us this absentee ballot from Cuyahoga County (Cleveland). Looking at the ballot, one would assume that to vote for President Bush, you'd punch out the green square opposite the arrow. Nope. The right square for Bush is the red one, number four, near the top of the column. That corresponds, I guess, to the number 4 next to the arrow, and I assume that voters are instructed in what those numbers mean. What makes it unreasonable is that to vote for John Kerry, you punch square six, the blue one, which...

Step Right Up The statesman speaks: You said I look like George W. Bush and I dressed in a sharp pin-striped suit ["The War at Home," December 10]. Great work -- if you were a fashion reporter. But candidate Ed Herman actually said, "At this stage of the game, all you have to do is be nice and not piss anybody off." His quote speaks volumes. Leadership isn't about trying not to piss people off. I have a platform. While Ed is practicing how to be a politician and say things that are politically expedient, I will continue to show...
