Amid economic turmoil for the American people, their representatives in Washington gave their offices a double-digit raise this month even as the average American worker finds their real wages decreasing due to inflation that outpaces wages at new. If you missed Congress giving itself a little pat on the back, that's understandable — members aren't likely to tout outside the beltway how they're filling their own office coffers, plus the funding increase for congressional offices was just one part of the 2,700+ page omnibus bill that funded the U.S. government to the tune of some $1.5 trillion. As RollCall explains,...

While President Donald Trump took swipes at Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress over the social media giant’s allegations of data misuse, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that it’s quite possible that hearings for a Supreme Court nomination could occur within the coming months. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy is said to be mulling retiring from the bench. It was not the meat of the story. Grassley was merely warning the president not to fire Mueller, or anyone in the DOJ, like Attorney General Jeff Sessions, which would burden the...

Republican Rep. Alan Nunnelee has been moved to hospice care following a seven-month fight with cancer. Morgan Baldwin, a consultant for the Mississippi Republican, said in a statement that doctors found a new tumor in Nunnelee and that “no further medical treatment is possible.” “After seven months of bravely fighting brain cancer and a stroke, Congressman Alan Nunnelee was informed last Friday that a new tumor has developed and no further medical treatment is possible,” Baldwin said. “On Monday of this week, Alan came home and is resting comfortably with family. HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- The U.S. House of Representatives attached a $3.4 billion government settlement with Indian trust beneficiaries to a war-funding bill that it passed just before breaking for the July Fourth holiday. The settlement was one of several additions made late Thursday to the $80 billion appropriations bill that includes funding for the troop surge in Afghanistan and money for federal disaster assistance. It authorizes the Obama administration to settle a class-action lawsuit with between 300,000 and 500,000 American Indians who claims the Interior Department mismanaged billions of dollars held in trust by the government......

The Fighting on capital hill intensified this week as the ominous reality set in that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have no intention of allowing the 'Gas Price Reduction Act of 2008' or similar legislation to be open to debate and a vote. But why?? There is a simple explanation, both Reid & Pelosi know...

If Usama bin Laden has a sense of humor – or maybe if his #2 guy, Ayman al-Zawahiri does -- the two must be laughing as hard as you or I do when we see a rerun of “Blazing Saddles.” The spectacle of the US Congress refusing to deal with the crisis in intelligence gathering necessitating amendment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act must tickle their funny bones like their favorite hostage-beheading video. Since April, the Democrats who control the US Senate have been sitting around like Mel Brooks’ oversexed and under-competent Governor LePetomaine, demanding harrumps from each other and...

Anti-war liberals worried about party unity are reluctant to mount opposition to war spending legislation in the House even if it does not set a firm date for troop withdrawal. Their support would pave the way for Democratic leaders next week to send President Bush a bill that would fund the Iraq war and still call for troops to leave by March 31, 2008, albeit a nonbinding withdrawal date. The measure would be weaker than House Democrats wanted but is advocated by the Senate, where Democrats hold a slimmer majority and many party members oppose setting a firm timetable on...

July 10, 2006 - Do you want a white Jew to represent you in Congress? The answer to the Jewish question is a resounding "no" on Nostrand Avenue in Flatbush - epicenter of a vicious political contest, even by Brooklyn standards. "Some ethnic groups are trying to control the area," warned Jude Saint-Phard, a 67 year-old construction worker who is black. "It's a master plan," he added. "It's the same plan that took Downtown Brooklyn from the blacks, that took Park Slope! Once they have the Congressional seat, they are pushing the blacks out of the area." I ask which...

The First Congress, and every Congress since then to the present day, has recognized that Advise and Consent requires only a majority vote in the Senate, and no more. The reason is that the Constitution specifies supra-majorities wherever the Framers thought that necessary. Examples include the supra-majorities to pass a constitutional amendment, ratify a treaty, or to override a presidential veto. Wherever the Constitution requires a decision by either House of Congress, it is a majority decision unless otherwise specified. The filibuster, which requires a supra-majority to close off debate in the Senate, is NOT a part of the Constitution....
