I have media files stored on a PC running Windows 10 Pro and also available for storage on a PC or laptop running Linux Mint. Photos, music files, videos, PDF books, and other eBooks. I would like to be able to access those files and view/listen to them on an iPad. It sounds like this is possible, but I was wondering if anyone has suggested ways to do this, along with any pitfalls to watch out for.

Welcome to my guide on how to navigate the oh so exciting world of AI with ChatGPT, an Artificial Intelligence created by OpenAI. Let's break down the basics in this easy-to-understand guide for some of us older Freepers who don't feel like slaying another dang dragon. ## Prompts A prompt is simply a question or statement that you give to ChatGPT. The AI then responds based on what you said. It's like starting a conversation with a friend. For example, you might ask, "What's the weather like today?" or tell it, "Tell me a joke." For some fun, try asking...

Twitter’s traffic has plunged since billionaire Elon Musk took control of the social media platform last fall, as longtime tweeters are migrating to alternative platforms such as Meta’s Threads. In a tweet Sunday, Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, an internet services company, posted a chart showing Twitter has been on the decline since the start of 2023. Twitter’s skidding numbers arrive as Meta officially launches Threads, which is widely seen as a new competitor to Twitter and debuted last week. As of Monday, Twitter is currently ranked 37 in Cloudflare’s list of top 100 domains, which coincides with the unpopular...

I run my own DNS servers and Mail server, I have purchased a few battery backups that are available, they work but they only work for a limited time. With one backup per computer, which I have 3, they will run for about 45 minutes if the power goes out. None of them work properly with Windows Server 19 to shut down system then restart when the power comes back on. I have had to make multiple emergency trips to my home in Arizona where they are setup, just to turn them back on. Yes it sucks. I decided to...

I’ve only been in an ICU once as a patient. I developed sudden chest pain and went to the ER. The funny thing about chest pain is that it gets you right to the front of the line at the ER. I had been there on a previous visit with a deep cut on my hand and had to sit with my hand over a garbage can so I wouldn’t get blood all over the floor. As it later turned out, the chest pain was actually caused by an ulcer that was creating reflux. The ulcer was caused by my...

That anonymous internet persona with an anime cartoon avatar in your Discord chat might actually be a contractor sent to spy on you. Enter the world of “threat intelligence.” It’s the term of art for a growing set of surveillance and security firms that create fake online personas to infiltrate and scrape data from private corners of the internet. The industry provides corporate and government clients with insight into conversations on private, invite-only Discord chats, WhatsApp groups, Reddit forums, and dark web message boards to help those powerful customers keep tabs on a variety of potential threats, from political hacktivists...

A few related questions for our FReeper computer gurus: Has anyone tried upgrading a fairly competent* Windows computer with an older processor from Win 10 Pro to Win 11 Pro? Are significant "tricks involved?** Then were there any subsequent problems with following updates (immediately after installation of Win 11 Pro?) *The 1st computer in question has an i7 6600u processor, 16gb DDR4 RAM, and a 512GB NVME SSD. (Pretty quick machine.) Then my immediate family & I have a few slightly "lesser" Win 10 Pro machines (which run great, and is as my custom I'll likely keep Win 10 Pro...

HELENA — Montana has become the first state to sign into law legislation banning Tiktok from operating within their borders, with Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte signing Senate Bill 419 into law on Wednesday. The ban goes into effect on January 1, 2024. In a press release, Gianforte said he signed the bill to “protect Montanas’ person, private, and sensitive data” from being gathered by China. “The Chinese Communist Party using TikTok to spy on Americans, violate their privacy, and collect their personal, private, and sensitive information is well-documented,” Gianforte said. “Today, Montana takes the most decisive action of any state...

A Beach Boys fan released a version of the band’s abandoned album Smile, using artificial intelligence software to complete the tracks. You can hear the full album below. Creator Mike LeRoy fabricated a backstory for his work before detailing how he brought it to fruition. “In the summer of 2018 I traveled to Japan,” he wrote in the video description, claiming he found the album in a secondhand store. “I slid a pink record sleeve out of a neatly packed shelf of vinyl records. Looking down at my prize, I was presented with a Native American glancing at the bicycle...

There's a well known expression regarding the use of computers: garbage in, garbage out, or GI-GO. It would be wise to keep this concept in mind when dealing with artificial intelligence (A.I.). Over the past several years, we have become fascinated with the possibilities of A.I. An article in Forbes from May of 2022 described five things to expect from A.I. in the next five years. The five are: Transformation of the scientific method. A.I. and machine learning (M.L.) will streamline and significantly accelerate medical research. Research and development by drug companies, as well as drug trials, will be accomplished...

(NEXSTAR) – A massive $725 million settlement involving Facebook’s parent company Meta was tentatively approved by a judge last month, paving the way for users of the social media platform to apply for a chunk of the payout. Meta has agreed to the payment to settle a lawsuit claiming Facebook allowed users’ personal data to be shared with third parties, the most famous being Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The firm harvested the data of as many as 87 million Facebook users, the Associated Press reported. Final approval of the settlement isn’t expected...

Can you predict the fate of following 8 programming languages: Java, Javascript, Python, C++, C#, Kotlin, Go, PHP?1. Java is the de facto enterprise standard. Having worked in some large enterprises, I know they are absolutely resistant to quick change and will keep Java for decades, like they did with COBOL. Java comes with enterprise and team features that other languages envy. 2. Javascript: depends on Web Assembly and transpilers. Even today, you can write in PHP and transpile in Javascript. It could become “the new JVM”, that is something that gets less used over time but everything use it...

The Workspaces overview on the Pop!_OS Linux desktop gives you a good idea of how fantastic the Linux workflow can be.Image: Jack WallenLinux might not be on the mind of every consumer that uses a PC, but it's certainly growing in popularity. The reason for this growth has to do with several factors, including how deeply embedded Linux is within the enterprise business space, how the web browser has become the primary tool for most users, the incredible evolution of Linux on the desktop, the cost-effectiveness of Linux (it's completely free), and how the open-source operating system can save you...

A team of computer science researchers with members from Google, ETH Zurich, NVIDIA and Robust Intelligence, is highlighting two kinds of dataset poisoning attacks that could be used by bad actors to corrupt AI system results. The group has written a paper outlining the kinds of attacks that they have identified and have posted it on the arXiv preprint server. With the development of deep learning neural networks, artificial intelligence applications have become big news. And because of their unique learning abilities they can be applied in a wide variety of environments. But, as the researchers on this new effort...

The Haddonfield man is accused of exchanging sexually explicit photographs and videos with the then-13-year-old victim during the summer of 2015. The victim lived in New York at the time. After the victim’s parents learned of the “inappropriate contact,” they notified law enforcemen... Prosecutors allege that Musbach decided to have the victim killed so that the victim could not testify against him in the pending criminal case. Musbach repeatedly contacted the administrator of a murder-for-hire website on the dark web, which purported to offer contact killings or other acts of violence in exchange for cryptocurrency, from May 7, 2016, to...

Businesses are likely to sweat device assets for longer this year as they spend conservatively in a weakening economy, and this along with shrinking demand from consumers is leaving manufacturers in a tight spot. Gartner forecasts a perfect storm with fortunes declining for shipments of PCs, tablets and mobile phones 4.4 percent year-on-year in 2023 to 1.74 billion units. If accurate, that's just slightly more than 287 million computers, down 6.8 percent, some 2.9 percent fewer tablets to almost 133 million and 1.339 billion phones, down 4 percent. This is against a backdrop of a 36 percent revenue decline for...

The entitled elites at the World Economic Forum, who disproportionately pollute our planet in their private jets, should worry less about environmental, social, and governance issues, and more about artificial intelligence.Artificial intelligence does not rank very highly in the World Economic Forum’s list of the world’s greatest threats in 2023. They may want to rethink that because the very popular chatbot ChatGPT is now the hottest thing in technology and technological innovation, according to CNBC.ChatGPT is a bot that can be used on a computer. CNBC gives a description here:ChatGPT is essentially a variant of OpenAI’s popular GPT-3.5 language-generation software...

Tensions between Elon Musk and Senate Democrats are heating up ahead of former President Trump’s expected return to Twitter, which comes amid reports that the popular social media platform has seen a rise in hate speech since Musk’s takeover last year. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is raising concerns about Twitter’s opaque financing and whether foreign interests could gain enough influence over the “digital town square” ahead of the 2024 election to pose a national security threat. Musk, anticipating more criticism from Democratic lawmakers, on Wednesday predicted the Biden administration “may try to weaponize federal agencies against Twitter.” ...
