Hackers have repeatedly penetrated the computer network of the company that runs the Nasdaq Stock Market during the past year, and federal investigators are trying to identify the perpetrators and their purpose, according to people familiar with the matter. The exchange's trading platform—the part of the system that executes trades—wasn't compromised, these people said. However, it couldn't be determined which other parts of Nasdaq's computer network were accessed. Investigators are considering a range of possible motives, including unlawful financial gain, theft of trade secrets and a national-security threat designed to damage the exchange. The Nasdaq situation has set off alarms...

I want to copy my 250 Gig Hard Drive to another 250 Hard Drive. I have been doing this for years with Drive Image using the 'drive copy' function in DI7. Now I get an error message "the service did not start due to a logon failure" and the drives do not show up in DI's GUI interface. I have not been able to figure how to correct this problem. I like to copy my whole HD not just make an image, that way if my drive ever fails I just pop the other drive in and I am up...

Five devices, services and trends unveiled at this year's CES that seem doomed from the start. The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas wrapped last week, and it was a doozy - unbelievably powerful new smartphones, a raft of tablets, TVs that do everything short of toweling off afterward, etc. Inevitably, though, there were some missteps. Companies large and small are pouring millions of dollars into projects that seem in serious danger of being derailed by simple mistakes -- ones that seem obvious to everyone but the people rolling them out, apparently. Here's a list of this year's foolhardiest...

Can one of you techy-types tell me how to get rid of all the crap that's collected on my computer to make it run sooooo slow and jerky? Defragging used to help, but no longer does the trick. A friend once delicately got into the 'Registry' and cleaned it up, but warned that is very tricky biz ... not for rookies. I've got a feeling it's just dragged down with blood-sucking parasites.

In the 20th century, this would have been a job for James Bond. The mission: Infiltrate the highly advanced, securely guarded enemy headquarters where scientists in the clutches of an evil master are secretly building a weapon that can destroy the world. Then render that weapon harmless and escape undetected. But in the 21st century, Bond doesn't get the call. Instead, the job is handled by a suave and very sophisticated secret computer worm, a jumble of code called Stuxnet, which in the last year has not only crippled Iran's nuclear program but has caused a major rethinking of computer...

The 23-year-old student hacker, Mitchell Frost, who hacked into the websites of Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and fellow FNC personality and conservative pundit, Ann Coulter, was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Along with the prison sentence, Frost has been ordered to pay restitution: $40,000 to O’Reilly and $10,000 to the University of Akron, where the student had been studying during the crime. The Ohio student pleaded guilty in May to using school computers and networks to access the sites. Between August 2006 and March 2007, Frost hacked into Frost was in his first year at the school when he...

How do we explain the current sorry spectacle of a highly intelligent president who repeatedly makes bad choices and decisions? Make no mistake about it – President Obama has done just that. Ever pause and wonder how ostensibly perspicacious individuals can show remarkable errors in judgment? History is filled with people like this, proving repeatedly intelligence is no guarantee of good judgment and decision-making. Why? In the 1980s, American aerodynamicists faced a conundrum: How did the USSR, using comparatively rudimentary computers and without CAD/CAM, nonetheless closely match America's best fighter designs? The answer, not immediately obvious, was that Soviet programmers...

A court threw out child porn charges against a Muslim cleric targeted as a terrorist by Canadian authorities, ruling purported evidence was gathered illegally. In 2007, Brampton, Ontario, cleric Ayad Mejid, targeted by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service as a suspected supporter of terrorism, sent his laptop to the spy service to prove his innocence, The Globe and Mail reported. Intelligence officials searching the computer without a warrant then forwarded the laptop to Toronto Police detectives who arrested Mejid, alleging they found child pornography images, the newspaper said Wednesday. The night before Thursday's trial, Superior Judge Jane Kelly threw out...

Yesterday, some T-Mobile stores began selling its newest mobile device, the G2, an Android-based smart phone originally slated for an October 6 release while AT&T is slated to release it later in the year. This device truly is representative of the next generation of mobile devices. The hardware capabilities surpass the abilities of most available netbook computers, including the ability to play High Definition video seamlessly. Unfortunately, the G2 also comes with built-in hardware that restricts what software a device owner might wish to install.Specifically, one of the microchips embedded into the G2 prevents device owners from making permanent changes...

A new photonic chip that works on light rather than electricity has been built by an international research team, paving the way for the production of ultra-fast quantum computers with capabilities far beyond today’s devices. Future quantum computers will, for example, be able to pull important information out of the biggest databases almost instantaneously. As the amount of electronic data stored worldwide grows exponentially, the technology will make it easier for people to search with precision for what they want. I am tired of fighting with MA Bell and I am activly looking for a new Internet Service Provider. Currently I have a bundled DSL and a land line (which I do not use). My cost each month is about $60 when I get a valid bill. My service is currently disconnected and is slated to be turned back on in 3 to 4 days. I have already waited one day. When my service is working, I have two 'hard wired' PCs and two WiFi devices. Does anyone have any good suggestions on who to turn to for better service?
