Can one of you techy-types tell me how to get rid of all the crap that's collected on my computer to make it run sooooo slow and jerky? Defragging used to help, but no longer does the trick.
A friend once delicately got into the 'Registry' and cleaned it up, but warned that is very tricky biz ... not for rookies.
I've got a feeling it's just dragged down with blood-sucking parasites.
Download, update and run Ad-Aware.
I could kiss you for posting this! I have the same issues. Hopefully the tekkies will show up and give us some advice.
copy off your important files.
and wipe your hard disk.
reinstall your operating system.
i had to do that recently.
ping
I like Registry Mechanic.
Never fiddle around with your registry by hand unless you know exactly what you what to do before you start.

Glary - http://www.glaryutilities.com/
CCleaner - http://www.piriform.com/
Malwarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/
All have free versions, all should be on your home computer and run from time to time. Awesome stuff.
I use system Mechanic.
You have liberals in your pc!
Download CCleaner from Piriform here: http://www.piriform.com/
you need to keep your sysem cleaned, of garbage files malware and viruses. Make sure your anti virus is up to date. If you don’t have one get microsoft security essential its free. superantispyware is another program that works with anti virus packages. Never run 2 anti virus programs at the same time. I have found tuneup utilities 2011 very effective, not free but very good. Make sure your operating system and programs are up to date, go to windows update and find secunia psi. lastly go to documents and setting/your profile/local settings/temp and delete everything you can on a regular basis.

Perform the following steps
1) go to your add/remove software (under control panel) and remove any and all software no longer needed.
2) go to Auslogics and download their defrag software and run the full optimization
3) If an XP machine, down load and install FreeRamXP Pro
4) download and run spybot search and distroy. Imunize first, then run the search for spyware
5) reboot
6) If you do not have an anti-virus, consider either malwarebytes or AVG
7) download and run Eusing free registry cleaner
8) reboot
At this time you should see significant improvement in windows. Up to this point you have been using free software. Further improvements can be had with additional efforts but I would need to know more about your system.
This will cure 95% of all “slow” windows PCs.
CCleanr and Malwarebytes usually clean up mine pretty good and get it going fast again
It is amazing the amount of crap that builds up
Registry cleaners sure help I run that program all the time!
Try running Disk Cleanup. You may have a lot of unnecessary files that are slowing down your PC.
Also, try setting msconfig to run only essential services.
1. Permanent solution: realize that Windows is a fatally flawed operating system and replace it with something better (Linux or Mac).
2. Barring that, to effectively operate a Windows computer you *must* perform a certain amount of computer janitor work every few weeks.
- First, make sure that you have a bought and paid for, current subscription for an antivirus program. Norton is the best one, McAfee products and AVG products are also available but perform less well. Paying the annual subscription fee to keep it up to date is only half the battle, you have to make sure that the virus detection libraries are updated frequently and your computer scanned at least every month or so.
- Second, make sure that you have downloaded, installed, and updated a malware spyware removal too. AdAware is good, I think Spybot is better. Spybot is available here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
Download it, install it, update it. Scan your computer and remove all the spyware that’s installed.
Don’t forget to immunize your system.
Then, at least once a month make sure it’s updated and run another scan/immunization.
Although it’s a free download, don’t forget to contribute to the project if you use it.
Don’t gamble on downloading random unknown “security” products off the internet for free as many of them turn out to be the very types of malware they claim to remove.
This computer janitor stuff is mandatory by the way. If you don’t do it, the most expensive Windows computer out there will be turned into a useless brick by malware in a matter of days...
(or, like I said, go here: http://www.apple.com and live happily every after. I don’t say this as someone who knows nothing about computers - I majored in computer science, and have built several systems from scratch - but at this point in my life I want my machine to work like an appliance and not have to deal with the computer janitor stuff that comes with being a Windows owner...)
