Ok all, I've got a computer problem on a new to me Laptop, a Compaq Armada M700, PII 366. It was working fine yesterday when I attempted to install Windows XP, unfortunately I only got 1/2 through it before the CD drive found a terminal scratch on my CD. The computer kept trying to go back to the CD install but could not get past the scratched CD. I opened the CD drive, removed the CD and attempted to shut the PC down. It kept asking for the XP disk and would not power down with the on/off button. I...

What are the advantages and disadvantages of moving to a non-Microsoft email client such as Eudora? What other options do you recommend? I already have abandoned IE in favor of Mozilla. Thanks.

A cyber attack that affected thousands of machines in Australia was launched from a Singapore computer, news reports said today. A Pacific Internet customer's server has been identified as the one turned into a rogue computer last month, hitting an Australian university computer network and affecting 10,000 machines, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) told The Straits Times. The regulator could not identify the attacker or his location and knew no motive for the attacks. It is believed the attacker probably gained control of the server without the knowledge of its owner or Pacific Internet, on whose network the server was...

I have been having trouble with spyware, and (thanks to people here) have downloaded and run Spybot S and D. It seems to have cleaned things up. Now, however, I have no hardware profiles. When I try to print, I am told I have no printers defined. When I use the "add printer" wizard, I get a message "operation cannot be completed." Also, I have no wireless capability, because I have no icon in the system tray for it (the one with two connected computers). Any help is appreciated. I am running XP Home. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who helped on my previous post. I am running XP Home Edition, and was having trouble with spyware and getting onto IE. I have downloaded and run Spybot S and D, but now have another problem. A number of drivers are missing (even though I'm running in normal mode). Specifically, - I have no hardware profiles - I cannot print, because I have no printers defined, and the "add printer" wizard gives me a "operation cannot be completed" error message - I have no wireless icon in my system tray (the picture of the two connected computers)...

I am running XP home edition. Recently, I have experienced problems bringing up Internet Explorer. When I click on the icon, the window appears, but it is slow in refreshing. My normal FR home page doesn't appear. Also, I get other IE windows that point to www.popuppers.com (even though I am using Panicware pop-up blocker). I try to close the individual windows, or close the group, but am unable to. I am running Norton Internet Security 2005. It told me that I have spyware, but can't delete it. Could this spyware be causing the problem? Any help is appreciated. I...

I work for a Fortune 500 company, and I'm a pretty happy user here of Outlook. The only major problem with it is that we can only keep about 30 Meg of space on the central server for all of our Outlook items. So the big hassle is staying under this limit, and putting the email someplace where it can be quickly searched for later reference. I figured out a reasonable way to move lots of email to another one of my drives. But the problem is that it is VERY slow to search through these old emails. I've searched...

Why does the media ignore the distinct possibility that Burkett typed these memo's? USA Today and CBS have been in his house. "Hey Bill, while we are visiting, do you mind if we look at your computer? Nice printer. What's on the hard drive Bill?" Seriously, whoever did this is guilty of a felony. Isn't there probable cause for the local sherriff to seach Burkett's house? Can't he be called in for questioning. If Burkett has a printer, does anyone know, can it be matched up to a specific document. You know, little imperfections, like they do with tracing of...

Google is spending some of the cash it raised from its IPO on headhunting staff to build a web browser. Staff have already been poached from Microsoft and Sun.Joshua Bloch, a senior Java developer at Sun, and four people from Microsoft's IE team have all joined the firm in the last few weeks, according to the New York Post. One of the four, Adam Bosworth, was also a lead developer in the development of Access. Joe Beda, a developer working on the user interface for Microsoft's Longhorn, has also joined Google. His blog refers to the NY Post story,...

Please no spilled milk jokes. Ok, spilled milk into my Inspiron laptop keyboard, (PIII 700 Mhz, 256k RAM, 30 GB HD, Win 98). I turned it over and powered down. I disconnected it, battery out, drives out, HD out, keyboard removed and all dried out for 36 hours. Cleaned out all the visible residue which seemed confined to the QWERTY area and some on the circuit board where the power button was (not the mother board). It now powers on and functions normally with the exception of the keyboard not working (5-6 keys mis typing), I figure it needs replacement,...

Pre-patch your XP Setup CD once; never have to install SP2 again. Fred Langa walks you through a 16-step process. Our recent discussions about Windows XP's SP2 show that the huge patch is working fine for most users; and that with caution (make a full backup or image beforehand; read and follow all of Microsoft's pre-SP2 installation tips), even potentially troublesome installations can be handled smoothly. But not swiftly: The update process can take a considerable chunk of your workday, even if you don't count the download time or install from the free SP2 CD. Twenty to 40 minutes seems...

Symantec has labelled a program that enables Chinese surfers to view blocked websites as a Trojan Horse. Upshot? Users of Norton Anti-Virus cannot access Freegate, a popular program which circumvents government blocks, the FT reports. Freegate has 200,000 users, Dynamic Internet Technology (DIT), its developer, estimates. It lets users view sites banned by the Chinese government by taking advantage of a range of proxy servers assigned to changeable internet addresses. But a recent update to Symantec's AV definition files means the latest version of Freegate is treated as malware and removed from systems protected by Norton. Short of disabling Norton...

A start-up company plans to release software at the end of this year that it claims will make it possible for applications designed for one platform to run on another at near native speed. Transitive Technologies Ltd.’s QuickTransit software, which resides in Flash memory or on a computer’s hard drive, decodes application binaries into an intermediate form, optimizes blocks of code and stores them in cache, then encodes for the target processor. It’s sort of a plug-in approach where companies will be able to mix and match starting and target operating systems, explained vice president of marketing Ed McKernan. “We...

Just asking... John Kerry's discharge papers from 1978 (as posted on his website) were typed with proportional type and justified right-hand margins. Was this common on official Navy discharge papers from 1978? http://www.johnkerry.com/pdf/jkmilservice/Honorable_Discharge_From_Reserve.pdf

(note from Stoat: This article goes on for eleven pages and so I'm only going to post an excerpt. Please be sure to go to the original article and read more than what I've posted here because there's a tremendous amount of real-world information that I would consider essential reading if you're considering the XP-2 patch either for your PC or for your enterprise) Forget the ivory-tower pundits--here are first-hand reports from the trenches, relayed by your peers who've already installed the new Service Pack. Hi - My PC clone has AMD-K6 & Win 98 SE 1. What changes do I have to make, (and how), to make my computer Boot from CD-ROM? I have a CD that has FreeSBIE / (FreeBSD) on it. When I am able to boot from the CD-ROM, then the FreeBSD is supposed to run the computer from the CD. 2. The ribbon cable that goes to the Hard Drive has that extra plastic connector in the middle of the cable. If I connect a 2nd hard drive to that extra connector, (also with the power connection), what else do...
