British chemist Martin Fleischmann, who stunned the world by announcing that he had achieved nuclear fusion in a glass bottle, has died after a long illness. He was 85. His son Nicholas said he died August 3, 2012, at his home in Tisbury, England. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease for many years. Fleischmann was one of the world's leading electrochemists when he and partner Stanley Pons proclaimed in 1989 that they had sparked fusion, the nuclear process that heats the sun, in an experiment at the University of Utah. The reaction they reported occurred at room temperature and appeared...

After decades of wandering in the scientific wilderness, cold fusion may be returning to the land of the acceptable. It's been more than 20 years since esteemed researchers Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann electrified the world with news that they'd observed low-energy nuclear reactions, or LENR, at the atomic level that generated excess heat, holding out the promise of "cold fusion" that did not require the blast furnace of nuclear fission as part of the energy-creating process. Cold fusion is, conceivably, a third type of nuclear reaction (after fission and so-called hot fusion) that somehow occurs at relatively low temperatures....

National Instruments, a major U.S. company that produces tools for engineers and scientists, sponsored a demonstration of a nickel-hydrogen gas low-energy nuclear reaction reactor on Monday at its annual NI Week trade show at the Austin Convention Center in Texas. National Instruments is also sponsoring talks there on LENR research. According to a source at the show who spoke with James Truchard, co-founder, president and chief executive officer of National Instruments, Truchard is very interested in LENR research. New Energy Times spoke with Julia Britts, media relations manager for National Instruments, on Monday to get more information about Truchard’s interest...

A comment today from Ugo Abundo, the professor who leads the research,...

Melvin Miles on Calorimetry: “We got excess heat” July 16, 2012 / Ruby Carat ________________________________________ It’s been twenty-three years since the announcement of the discovery of cold fusion, and yet, this powerful solution to our energy needs is not even recognized by the Department of Energy (DoE), despite the interest of other federal agencies like NASA and the military. In trying to understand why, I learned that it was the top science schools in the U.S. who produced negative reports early in 1989 that influenced both federal policy and mainstream academic science, and still do today. Diverse Interest in LENR Indicates a Paradigm Shift Posted on July 18, 2012 by Admin For many of us, our interest in cold fusion began last January, or thereabouts, when we heard about Andrea Rossi and his e-Cat. For nearly a year we followed the story waiting for RossiÂ’s big reveal in October of 2011. Unfortunately, that event was anti-climatic, and while something certainly did happen that day, we are still unsure exactly what. Yet along the way, we began to learn about new players in the game, and some old names re-emerged. Regardless, it seemed that everybody involved in...

Your humble writer has been watching for the news out of the International Low Energy Nuclear Reactions Symposium, ILENRS-12 held at The College of William and Mary Sadler Center early last week. At long last, after years of little available event news we’re getting some interesting bits out. The process of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR) or Cold Fusion or your choice on an array of ideas on what to call it, have required the element palladium as a catalyst, that isn’t consumed, but represents...

Cold Fusion Is Hot Again - Tuesday, July 17th 9p | 12a ET "A report on cold fusion - nuclear energy like that which powers the sun, but made at room temperatures on a tabletop, which in 1989, was presented as a revolutionary new source of energy that promised to be cheap, limitless and clean but was quickly dismissed as junk science. Today, scientists believe that cold fusion, now most often called low temperature fusion or a nuclear effect, could lead to monumental breakthroughs in energy production."

National Instruments Deeply Involved With Many LENR Projects (Briefed EU) July 2, 2012 Thanks to E-Cat World reader ‘un passante’ who sent the report of a talk given by Stefano Concezzi, director of National Instruments’ Science and Big Physics Segment. The talk was given at yet another meeting about LENR — “Towards a non-polluting energy revolution” — a meeting held today, July 2 in Rome, Italy. A recording of the meeting’s proceedings is available (in Italian) here. Here’s the report — thanks very much un passante! Italian seems to be an essential tool in the LENR world! Concezzi gave...

We're used to Andrea Rossi making statements about his work on the Journal of Nuclear Physics web site. Warm (or, better, fresh) regards… Italo R. - Andrea Rossi June 24th, 2012 at 1:37 PM Dear Italo R.: Actually, I am in the USA, close to 20 reactors working above 600 Celsius. We must collect...

Got mass? Scientists observe electrons become both heavy and speedy Electrons moving in certain solids can behave as if they are a thousand times more massive than free electrons, but at the same time act as superconductors. A new study led by Princeton scientists shows that this happens because of a process known as quantum entanglement that determines the mass of electrons moving in a crystal. The discovery can help improve understanding of how certain materials become superconducting, which may have applications in areas such as power network efficiency and computing speed. Submitted to J. Condensed Matter Nuclear Science, June 2012 1 An explanation of low energy nuclear reactions (cold fusion) Edmund Storms KivaLabs. Santa Fe, NM ABSTRACT A plausible nuclear-active-environment in which LENR occurs is identified by ruling out various possibilities and by identifying an environment that is common to all successful methods. When this environment is combined with a plausible mechanism, many testable predictions result. These insights and proposals are offered to help clarify understanding of LENR and to suggest future studies. The common environment in which LENR occurs is proposed to be cracks of a critical size, followed...

NASA LENR Research June 6, 2012 Some of the inner workings behind the decision to fund LENR research at NASA have now been revealed. There are no great shock-waves and no-one should get carried away into seeing things that are not there or implied. Even so, in answering Keith Cowing’s questions (published on the NASAWatch site) Dennis Bushnell and Joe Zawodny clarify a few important points. Funding is modest but useful at under $1m so far. The decision to fund was subject to internal peer-review and NASA HQ is briefed on progress. My guess is that the latter is just...

Of all the interesting tidbits to come out of The Atom Unexplored conference in Turin, Italy in May 4, perhaps the account by Dr. Peter Hagelstein of MIT on how a prominent physicist actively worked to cut cold fusion funding was the most eye-opening. In the question and answer session held after the morning LENR portion of the proceedings, a member of the audience asked a rather poignant question regarding why scientists often fail to develop clear “road maps”  from the laboratory to the “real world.”  In responding to this question, Dr. Hagelstein gave a quite detailed and thoughtful answer...
