• Will Talent face re-election in 2006? Senate Class I or reassigned to Class II?

Senators are assigned to a "Class", either I, II, III, which determines their dates of term of service (and hence their re-election schedule). Mel Carnahan was in Class I - terms of service expire in 2001, 2007, etc. Upon his death, his office was inherited by his wife which triggered the special election this year. Did Jean Carnahan also inherit/maintain this senate class for this Missouri senate seat? All other senators elected this year are in Class II - terms of service expire in 2003, 2009, etc.

Zimbabwe's new middle class have one ambition: a ticket out By Peta Thornycroft in Harare (Filed: 29/10/2002) Zimbabwe's black middle class lives in a street near you in London, according to one economist, Farai Zizhou. "They spoke with their feet," he said. On a recent evening at Harare International Airport, an Air Egypt cheap flight to Cairo was full. Hundreds of people milled around the check-ins, all on their way to London. George Satande, 36, a partner in a pharmacy in Harare's leafiest suburb, manages to pay the bills only because his wife, a nurse, works in London. "It's strenuous...

They sign your paycheck, hold the mortgage on your house and drive a much better car than you do. Everywhere you turn, they're running things -- from Congress to Wall Street to the war on terrorism.

But wealthy white males also are a minority group, and one that's largely escaped study on college campuses, argues Channa Newman, a professor at Point Park College.

In response to a reporter’s question, one liberal parent didn’t seem to mind that her child was attending one of the worst elementary schools in San Francisco. This is how she sugar coated the bitter bill, “There's no test that can tell people that my daughter wakes up every morning before 6:30 to get dressed and loves going to school," To further underscore why the “active” parents are frequently ineffective and achieving academic excellence, look at this Chron excerpt, "At Alvarado, Halladey found diversity among faculty and students, a colorful atmosphere, an approachable principal and an immersion program that has...

Current Issue: February 21, 2002 News HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES 'The paradox of American power': Despite its dominance, U.S. can't go it alone, says KSG's Nye By Alvin Powell Gazette Staff Kennedy School Dean Joseph S. Nye Jr. says that the United States today wields two kinds of power, 'hard' and 'soft,' both of which are critical to america's predominance on the world stage. The United States is at a pinnacle of world power comparable to that reached by the British and Roman Empires, yet in today's world its military might, economic power, and cultural sway aren't enough to...

Monday, August 4, 2002Gore Declares Class Warfare Al Gore, the number two man in the most corrupt administration in American history, took to the pages of the New York Times with a column warning that the "confidence in the honesty of our government," has fallen. In an op-ed column Saturday "Broken Promises and Political Deception," Gore declared all-out war on the Bush administration - all-out class warfare, that is, dredging up such rusty old Marxist slogans as "the forgotten middle class" fighting the "forces of greed." Standing up for "the people, not the powerful." And the GOP was not...

The days of just rolling out of bed and rolling into class are coming to an end. Pajamas, the preferred attire of some sleepy and study-weary students, are no longer allowed in Hillsborough County schools. "I think as long as you don't look like a hootchy mama, you should be able to wear whatever," said Nevena Novakovic, 17, a junior at Robinson High School in Tampa. The opening of Tampa Bay area schools this year will bring a variety of changes in the way students are supposed to look and act. Skate shoes, or athletic shoes with skates built inside,...

WASHINGTON - Vermont Governor Howard Dean yesterday called for a rollback of President Bush's $1.3 trillion tax cut to pay for universal health coverage, the strongest antitax cut proposal to date by a potential 2004 Democratic presidential contender.

Providing health insurance to all Americans would ''cost about half the cost of the president's tax cut, which I think should be pretty much repealed. I think the president's tax cut is costing us a fortune,'' Dean said on NBC's ''Meet the Press'' yesterday.

  • Ratcheting up the class war in America a notch- Connecticut Democrats fan the flames

The Connecticut Democrats are proposing a “Millionaire’s Tax” increasing the Personal Income Tax by 1% on taxpayers with incomes exceeding $1.0 million. This increase would take effect beginning on January 1. 2002 and would be retroactive by six months. That’s right, a special tax to solely penalize people for being financially successful. An increase in the income tax is just not a good policy idea. In 2000, the number of millionaire filers numbered approximately 7,529 (raising around $1 billion, or $220 million each). Due to this plan, the anticipated number of filers for tax year 2002 would be 6,500, with...

When Barbara Bush became the nation's first lady in 1989, the contrast could not have been greater. There was outgoing first lady Nancy Reagan: petite and doll-like in a size 4, smartly dressed in designer outfits and often wearing dazzling Harry Winston jewels. And then there was Bush: a size 14, with white hair, fake pearls and sensible shoes. She summed up the difference between Nancy Reagan and herself this way: "As you know," Bush said in 1986, during a charities roast in Washington, D.C., "we have a lot in common. She adores her husband; I adore mine. She fights...
