  • Ayn Rand and the Intellectuals

"I may be jumping in the deep end here but here goes anyway...
....It seems to me that the conservatives who despise Rand are the Morality police, religous nuts..."live your life my way or your going to hell"(whatever that might be)folks that will continue to turn more tolerant people off from our cause."

Your post made more sense than any so far. Straight, to the point and in English.

The problem with intellectuals is that they feel the need to obfuscate their rhetoric with excessive and grandiose verbiage. (and they like to hear themselves talk). If people are trying to make a point, then make it, and move on.

In comparison, you have struck to the heart of the matter with a few simple words. As they say in the tobacco chewin' belt, " You ain't got yer good stuff, but yer still pitchin' strikes."
If people find their happiness with like minded people, then all the power to them, just don't come down the street to try and cram it down my throat.

Freedom is not a right, it is a responsibility, and cannot harm others, or infringe on another's freedom. It is the pursuit of freedom that is a right.

As far as God goes, each person has to face Him alone, and your church parking permit ain't gonna help you. It's not where you park your car, its how you drive it.

    CANADIAN FREEPER ALERT!!!
" While Chretien golfs, his fellow countryman and favorite accused terrorist Ahmad Said Khadr is still on the loose.

Khadr, an Egyptian-born Canadian citizen, is considered by intelligence officials to be the highest-ranking Canadian within Osama bin Laden's inner circle. He studied computer science at the University of Ottawa and worked for an Ottawa-based Islamic charity, Human Concern International, which was generously subsidized by Chretien's government."

" Interesting ... I wonder how it affects Chinese assembly plants ... and will the virus cling and survive on the surface of manufactured goods."

Viruses are extreme survivors, perhaps the dominant lifeform in the universe. Some can survive extreme conditions in space for astronomical lengths of time. They arrive here daily in comet dust, and on meteorites.

" but because of the Iraq regime's decade-long violation of the terms of the cease fire that ended GW I and its violation of repeated (17 or 18?) UN resolutions."

If you read resolution 686 (1991), the first Gulf War was never ended, but there was a "suspension of offensive combat operations", To avoid a resumption of these "operations", and bring the war to a "definitive end of hostilities", Iraq had to assure everyone of their "peaceful intentions", amongst other things.

The first Gulf War was never ended, merely suspended, call it a rain delay (longer because of Clinton).
Iraqi intelligence meetings with Mohammed Atta before 911 did not likely convince anyone of Saddam's Iraq to maintain the peace.
Bush has just pulled back the tarp from the field again, and said play ball, to continue the baseball analogy.
Saddam called the bullpen, and found his relief staff running for Syria with their gloves and chewing tobacco left behind.

We still have the cartoon hanging up at work, I think it was in the National Post.

Pictured are some Canadian troops with captured Taliban. The caption was "We are going to take you to the Americans now. Would you mind chipping in for gas?"

Or the Canadian sniper, who with one shot from 1200 meters who took out that Taliban machine gun emplacement that had American troops pinned down.
"Its a good thing it was his turn to have the bullet."

Canada, remember this embarrassment next election!

Thank God these people have been returned safely.
Especially Edgar Hernandez, he was so defiant and brave in that Iraqi TV video.
And Sgt. Riley, he looked terrified more than any of the others.
But we are glad they are all safe.
I hope they make a big deal of this too. I really felt for the other wounded that came back on Jessica's plane yesterday, nobody wanted to talk about them. Talk about your unkonwn soldier.

"When exactly is your next election? If a strong candidate is chosen to run against the frog in Canadian clothing I would definetly consider sending some greenbacks North of the border in support."

Canadian Alliance - Address on Military Intervention in Iraq

This article speaks for many Canadians, perhaps the majority. Get the word out! Vote Canadian Alliance in the next election.
I urge all Canadians to tell Joe Clark and the rest of the Progressive Conservative Party to end the division of our political right. Mr. Clark, throw in the towel, give your seats to the Canadian Alliance now. United we can rid this country of this embarrassment of a Prime Minister, and his cronies.

Who said CNN is better than CBC? As bad as the CBC can be, this is a terrible insult. CBC is often dryer than a camel fart, but they don't ram it down your throat, like CNN (The Ministry of Fear)
CNN's hour consists of 10 minutes of talking about their own people, 20 minutes to tell you what they will be covering. Commercials, oh yeah and some news.
Walter Rodgers had some brilliant moments. But Wolf is a drone. All of their readers talk like Kindergarten teachers.
Dear Cable Company, have you ever heard of Fox News?
Even so, they are all ambulance chasers, which is why I come to places like FR for my news. Freepers do a much more honest job of reporting than any "NEWS" network.

    BINGO!
Was waiting to see a post like this. Anybody who believes in a totally free press does not understand Madison Ave.
To make the advertisers understand what free press is really about, vote with dollars. It is the only scorecard they understand.
Boycott any product sold on CNN. Email the CEO's of these corporations, and inform them of your intent. This is your most effective franchise, even moreso than your vote. Until the advertisers pull their accounts you don't buy.

Like others in this thread, I'm most interested in what CNN knows about the Clinton regieme in exactly the same set of circumstances.

Yes the Clinton administration knew these things as well as CNN. When Clinton would not stand up to Iraq, CNN should have pulled out, if they were a legitimate news agency, which I don't believe they are.

Turkey is on the slightly side, of the Coaltion of the Willing. They are allowing flyovers and refueling. They have a vested interest in what's going on. My only question in this is as follows. Are the Kurds going to get screwed?
They have maintained relative peace on Iraqs northern borders for 12 years, and prospered on their 13% cut of Oil For Food. They are an ethnic group with a long history. Many Kurds live in Turkey and Iran. They deserve something out of this. The US has played both sides against the middle here, but trouble is coming there.. I doubt the Kurds will sit still without an independant state. Either Turkey or the Kurds will get screwed over this.
Where will we stand on this?

I agree that what CNN has done is reprehensible at the least, and likely criminal, but I think you will find that the workers for the "REAL" news agencies will be able to tell you similar stories. I don't think CNN is alone in this. To believe that would be implying that they are better news gatherers. This is truly not so. I am sure that these stories have been "sanitized" until now. The leaking of these stories now, only serves to provide further justification for this war, (as if that were neccessary). CNN is leaking now to offset the fact that they have no WMD stories. They are NOT a news agency. Their stories are written at a Grade 5 education viewership.(those who cannot reason for themselves), but their selection of stories is cunning. They are the Ministry of Fear. Witness the multiplication of force of anti-Clinton ire in this thread. Their job is done. Even if not one WMD is found, the public now has their justification. Read Orwell again people.

I would like to think that some of what CNN is "leaking" now, was reported to the proper gov't authorities. It was certainly known by US Intelligence, (if CNN could see it), but nothing was said out loud, to allow time for the plans to be drawn up, and the troops and equipment to arrive in the theatre, and General Franks' brilliant surprise ground war launched. When the intelligence assets were secured, the story was allowed to leak. I wonder if Colin Powell brought this information to the UN Security Council? If so shame on them. Certainly it was known at the White House. Did the state department tell Cretien about this? If so, a lot of Canadians will be looking for Cretien's statues today.

You don't know how relieved I am that so many Americans are up in arms over CNN. I was concerned that there were a majority of Americans that actually believed everything they saw on CNN, and I see now, after discovering Free Republic that this is not so. Whew!!!!! Up here in Ontario, we don't call it CNN, we call it the Ministry of Fear. (All anthrax, all the time). How refreshing to see it trashed south of the border as well.
Having said that, I find the presence of psy-ops at CNN not surprising. I think it is still possible that CNN is a government agency designed to enrage Republicans to action, (which it has done admirably) and give the appearance of placating the libs.
