This demonstrates Elon Musk’s thoughts on college. In an interview he basically said that today you can learn just about anything for free online. College is just for having fun, and for proving you can do your chores and work with deadlines, but not for learning.

That’s why at his companies they look for proof of exceptional performance, not degrees.

Maybe maybe not... extreme telephoto views can make things look closer together than they really are.

I once did a similar test with a .38 special. It was a non-jacketed lead bullet shot from a S&W .357 revolver. It embedded in the 18th layer of drywall, if I recall correctly.

Rush is right - he is not marveling simply that the video is flipped. He was marveling that the flipped video also showed more than the first one, and indeed, as posted above, the “flipped” video is actually a different video. For some inexplicable reason, rather than just simply uploading the video, the uploader decided to also flip it.

So seems Rush picked up on something I missed. I thought it was the same video, just flipped. But it was a different video that was unnecessarily flipped.

Now that it's done, I wonder how long before the Bohemian Grove crowd spin a conspiracy about how the execution was faked in a collaboration between the people who hoaxed the moon landing and George Bush's pet hamster...

I'm pretty sure they're not wearing uniforms in an effort to maintain anominity for the executioners. While I'm sure most in Iraq are thrilled at the execution, I'll bet the terrorists over there would love to get their hands on the executioners.

Gas prices (petroleum and natural gas) continue to rise, and so do profits. When does it become price gouging? And is anybody out there working on tryint to prove price fixing?

I find it strange that gas prices recently dropped to $2.00/gall (in my area, at least), only to creep back up to around $2.50/gall. Sounds like a decrease in consumption caused the companies to back off, and now I'll bet they're slowly raising up prices again trying to stay below some magic number that will cause sales to drop again.

Near the end of the article it mentioned lawmakers trying to impose a windfall tax. What a genius idea... tax the oil company so they have another excuse to raise prices.

As for effects, I, for one, definitely modified my driving habits last year. Several times I wanted to drive around town for some items, but didn't because of the prices. Nor did I take any drives up into the mountains to do stuff I enjoy like hiking and camping. These prices will destroy the american way of life where the car gave us freedom to go out and enjoy this great country. Weekend trips are now all but a thing of the past for me. I feel like I'm a prisoner of gas prices...

The scud reference was joke. I know that, and most here also. But in my experience, there are people who don't quite grasp the concept of sarcasm. Case in point: I made a sign at a recent pro-america rally which read:

"Support Saddams use of ACID - say no to war"

After a couple people commenting that this wasn't an anti-war rally, and my subsequent explanations to the humor-challenged, I ended up trashing the poster. And so in case there are humor-challenged lurkers in here, I thought it would be good to clarify, and also show off one of the biggest darn model rockets I've seen.

As a sidenote, there was also a FULL SCALE model patriot missile at the event. Unfortunately, it had a hard landing which caused extensive damage.

In response to another poster, model rocketry is an inefficient way to deliver weapons which requires a bit of luck to actually hit a target. There are better ways to hit such targets, and the FBI also believes the method I'm thinking of is a very real current threat.

They do appear to be getting a mite large. I guess when they get to the size of a scud maybe we should limit the size also.



Is this bigger than a scud?

The name of this rocket is "Down Right Ignorant". It was launched in 1993 at LDRS XI.

The rocket was powered by 1 "O" motor, 5 "L" motors, and 8 "K" motors. The Estes kits sold in stores are rated as A, B, C, and D motors, each consecutive letter having twice the total power output as the previous. This makes an "O" motor 16,000 times more powerful than an Estes A motor.

The rocket at a wieght of 800lbs reached an altitude of 3,500 feet and was sucessfully recovered. Even though it doesn't seem like it, 3,500 feet isn't all that high. Smaller rockets powered by a single O motor have gone beyond 35,000 feet.

All that being said, these rockets are nothing like Scud missiles in that they have nowhere near the range of a scud missile. In order ot equal the range of a scud, a very large and very expensive motor would have to be custom made. Something like that is well beyond the scope and capabilities of the materials available to hobby rocketeers.

I could tell immidately that the top one was the fake, but that's beside the point.

I think the plastic gun in the photograph (the toy plastic gun, not the real plastic gun) has been modified. I knew some people who were big into airsoft. They looked completely para-military when they were dressed up to game. Anyhow, all their weapons had orange plastic pieces over the ends of the barrels which screan "FAKE GUN" I wonder if they took that off for the picture so that it would have greater shock value?

No mixing of chemicals takes place on the part of the hobbyist. It's all done at the factory.

Since you stated you don't know anything about the hobby, let me help you. (This is not a flame)

Several years ago, I had the priviledge of attending an LDRS launch at the Boneville Salt Flats in Utah. (LDRS is a very large annual launch where high power enthusiasts congregate and launch literally thousands of rockets over the period of three days)

While I was there, I got to hear a man named Frank Kosdon speak. Frank Kosdon is the founder of the Kosdon East, the manufacturer of the Kosdon TRM (Truly Reloadable Motor) system. He has a degree in chemistry, and developed various propellants used in high power rocketry.

Mr. Kosdon had much to say about BATF regulations back then. (This was back in the late 90s). Mainly his argument was against the BATF's classification of high power rocket propellant as an "explosive".

High power rocket motors use a composite propellant. If you were to hold it in your hand, it would feel and bend like a chunk of rubber. It is mixed with ammonium perchlorate, which is the oxidizer to cause the propellant to burn. (Ammonium perchlorate is also the stuff used in the Space Shuttle boosters)

Basically, to be an explosive, the material has to be capable of detonation. Detonation being "An explosion or sudden report made by the instantaneous decomposition or combustion of unstable substances' as, the detonation of gun cotton.", according to Dictionary.com.

Despite many attempts, NOBODY HAS BEEN ABLE TO CAUSE A ROCKET MOTOR TO DETONATE. The propellant used in high power rocket motors is not a material capable of an instantaneous decomposition or conbustion. Most high power rocket motors take several seconds to completely combust, a far cry from instantaneous.

And so in conclusion, it is simply not possible to make a bomb using high power rocket propellants.

In terms of using a high power rocket as a delivery system, this can only hurt the legitimate user. If a terrorist organization is capable of making explosives, they can certainly also make or obtain rocket propellant through the same channels they used to get the true explosives. Aside from that, these rockets travel so fast that one would have to get incredibly lucky to hit an aircraft without highly sophistocated onboard electronic guidance and targeting systems.

Bottom line is that high power propellants are incapable of detonation, and therefore fail to meet the definition of an explosive. A terrorist would be better suited to simply walk into a gun store and buy a whole lot of reloading powder. After all, that's where high power rocket enthusiasts go to get their supply of black powder (FFFFG) used to deploy the rocket's main recovery system.

My motivation for this is seeing what happened with the Pro-America rallies which sprouted up across America as a result of Glenn Beck wanting to put on a series of Pro-US rallies. His first rally was in San Antonio, and attracted 7,500 people. Then there are the innumerable others across the country who made rallies happen in their own town. If the big five were all behind this, I believe the rallies would have been much, much larger.

At the very least, they should coordinate their efforts to publicize rallies in the name of conservative issues.
