This list would be more useful if the averages were controlled for cost of living within each state. $53K in NYC isn't much at all, while $53K in a small rural Adirondack district is quite a lot.

And with each state including different portions of a teacher's benefits there's no way to compare the numbers in a meaningful way.

IIRC Matt's does about 35-40% contract work for other brewers. It wouldn't suprise me if they did work for the bar, but without a brand name I couldn't tell you if they do or not.

I'm not familiar with McSorley's. If that's a brand, they didn't havea sample of it anywhere. If that's a brewer, what are some of the beers they make?

There was only one brand of beer that the guide and the brewery weren't keen on talking about: Sam Adams.

One in the same. They brew quite a few beers, both under their own labels (Saranac, Utica Club, Two Dogs) and under contract for other companies (Brooklyn, Rheingold, and even for their competitor Sam Adams). They have a line of soft drinks (1888) and a "low carb" beer, Accel, which doesn't seem to be going over well in it's targeted market. I would like to try their hard cola, but then again I'm a cola addict to being with. :)

I still don't understand their old advertising campaign with the beer steins (Something and Shooley IIRC). A piece of history lost on this Upstate New Yorker.

BTW here's some interesting trivia: In one of the rooms on the tour they have a cabinet with every single beer Matt's Brewery has ever made in its 100+ year history. Some of the cans have seen WWII in the Pacific and made it back to the brewery, and there was even a point where the beer cans looked like motor oil cans.

Hmmm. Our tour guide said that the brewery for Brooklyn beer wasn't "lost" until the '70s. It wouldn't suprise me that the national breweries ran them out of town, but it is surprising to me that the company itself would survive with the loss of their brewery.

As for the Rheingold, I wasn't impressed by it. I still prefer the Saranac Black and Tan (Or the real thing when I feel like getting it). I never knew that they ran beauty contests and such though. Very interesting.

That brewery in Utica is Matt Brewing Company, the makers of Saranac.

Not only are they doing Rheingold, they're doing a whole line of beers named "Brooklyn Beer". According to the tour guide the brewery was lost several decades ago and Matt Brewery is doing the beer under contract.

It would be interesting to know how this brewery company actually lost its brewery, but I love it that Bloomburg is being made fun of. He certainly deserves it.

They've had complaints about blocking the public right of way in the past. They're doing it again, and now because it's a statue of Chirst and not Indian art it's a Freedom of Religion issue.

With such a large statue they should have gone the extra mile to get written approval and spelling out to the local gummit the size and planned location of what they wanted to do. The lack of a formal permit procedure isn't surpising; it's actually commonplace in smaller districts across the nation.

BTW, before you go foaming at the mouth, take a look at the picture in the article. The statue is in the *ROAD*, where a parking place presumably is. I'm sure there are state level regulations about what a private corporation can put in a road.

The gallery is whining "persecution" certainly doesn't put them on any moral high ground, given the photo and the information in the article. Sounds more like whining than anything else.

Knowing how NY determines its electoral votes, I'd have to say that your analysis of how New is going to go in the presidential election somewhat meaningless, unfortunately.

In New York, our electors are determined by our Assembly. They pick one elector for each district, and then the electors get together and cast their vote. The one who gets the majority of the votes gets the entire state.

Now here's the kicker: The electors do not have to vote based on the vote of their district. They can look at the results and follow the popular vote, but they can also vote ofr the best dressed, or the biggest ears as far as our election laws care.

IOW New Yorkers, your vote really doesn't mean anything when it comes to a Presidential election.

What would be much more interesting and useful in your analysis would be how each state picks it's electors, how they vote (Must follow their district, free for all, etc), and if the state is a "winner take all" state or not.

You might even be able to tell from that data whether a single large population center might unduly shift a state towards one candidate or not (Eg: NYC determines who New York goes to; Upstate NY is pretty much useless for determining political leanings).

Not true. Statutory rape in the NYS Penal Code for females is 18 in New York. It is 16 for males.

I agree with the article; these countries will start shooting each other over the water and who has rights to what.

Given the militaries from these countries the fighting will also be very bloody and over a long period of time with no decisive victories for either side.

I may not like Putin in how he's running his country as a whole, but he does have the right attitude when it comes to terrorists. Now if our elected officials would just learn something from him in that regard, instead of sending money to Egypt and Jordan, and practicing on being dhimmis.

The amout of crap that people in cars (The sub-compact and luxury car drivers are the worst!) pull when near a tractor-trailer is incredible. Pull in front of a TT and then hitting their brakes; cutting a TT off; it's amazing that more car drivers aren't killed. Not that they don't deserve it.

No lawyer who's a plantiff representing the car driver in a civil suit against a tractor-trailer driver will want me on the jury!

There's A LOT that they'd have to do to become competitive. A lot of their ingrained socialism and welfare state will have to be wiped out to become competitive.

IMO it will be China that becomes our major competitor in the near future. Once the old guard dies off, I think they'll reform their economy and become a real threat in every sense of the word.

The EU is a dying horse. They can't get a constitution written properly, or even get it adopted by popular vote (IIRC the EU commission is going to force it on member states. There's the way to make a constitution popular).

If Ford would stop producing CRAP and calling them vehicles maybe their financial situation would improve.

You seem to think that the Republican party has their act together in NY. I'm sorry to say, but they're a joke.

This is the party that fielded Pierre Reinfret (sp?) for Govenor against Mario Cuomo. Remember him? He reminded me of Boris Yeltsin, gin-blossomed nose and all. And let us not forget Mayor Bloomberg. His claim to fame? The cigarette and ashtray police.

Pataki is more of a centrist than a Republican (Look at the sell-outs to unions and his gun-control laws). I've seen democrats that hold more Republican ideals than Pataki.

The only high point in the last twenty years for the Republican party is Rudy Guilani, and depending on how his fight with cancer goes he may not be in shape to run for office (I hope he recovers, but IIRC the form of cancer he is afflicted with has a low survivability rate).

I wouldn't bank on that. It was NYC that gave her that Senate seat, and NYC is is quite Leftist (That RINO playing mayor says it all IMO).

Unless Rudy runs, I would say she's got a lock on the seat. Most of NY west of the Hudson can't stand her (Hell, my home town BOOED her when she went on stage), but if NYC wants her, then NY will be stuck with her.
