A Rock County man sentenced to two years in federal prison for shooting a deer while he was on probation for domestic violence has had his case overturned by a federal appeals court. The case could have far-ranging impact in the gun-rights debate. For Steve Skoien, it meant he'll be home for the holidays. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago ruled earlier this month that, in light of a major Supreme Court ruling about individual gun rights last year, prosecutors need to show that a lifetime ban on gun ownership for those convicted of domestic violence has a...

There have been a few threads lately regarding people's effort to support the troops during this holiday season. Unfortunately, they have been a little quiet. Accordingly, I would like to isssue a Christmas challenge to my fellow FReepers: I will match the next $500 in donations to USO Operation Phone Home. A link is provided above. If you have been thinking about donating, but have not as of yet, now is the time to double your money! Help those people defending our country. They will greatly appreciate it.

Police are planning to question the adult children of two prominent Democrats as early as today in the wide-ranging probe into who, early on election day, slashed the tires of 20 vans and cars rented by the Republican Party. The investigation has already led to the Tuesday arrest of Opel E. Simmons III, a veteran party activist from Virginia in town to work on John Kerry's presidential campaign. Simmons, 33, was released Thursday afternoon without being charged. Sources told us that police, who are being assisted by the FBI, plan to speak to Michael Pratt, son of former Acting Mayor...

If you have missed listening to Sykes/Wagner/Belling, the Ament & crony pension grab has legs. The rally was mentioned by Sykes on the radio, and the Brown Deer people will be there. This is the time to organize and coordinate. We have a chance to pull this off and restore honest government to MKE. It could be our last chance. BE THERE!

expected to include State Sen. Margaret Farrow and Rep Scott Walker [nice job LouD!]. With the apparent victory of W [let's see the EC tally], we must now gear up for the next election. There is much to do locally and nationally for the upcoming '02 elections. We have only just begun. Join us in charting our course for the future.

our traditional site at the corner of Jefferson and Kilbourn. [NOTE: this is NOT the same location as last week]. We should have a good turnout, as the Media Master [otherwise known as newt] has been able to plug the rally on both the Belling and Hudson shows this week. In contrast to previous efforts when they would not let us through, they allowed him to speak his piece, and he did a fine job. Thanks, newt.

The rally today to be held at Third and State has been endorsed by the state GOP, and is listed on their website. We have contacted the state and county groups in SE WI to coordinate events. They have been very helpful, and appreciative of fresh blood coming in to participate.

Let's remain voter-friendly From the Journal Sentinel Last Updated: Nov. 29, 2000 A picture ID for voting is an idea whose time must not yet come in Wisconsin, a pioneer in easy access to the ballot. Sure, most residents would find a photo ID no inconvenience at all. But for voting-age citizens who lack one, the requirement would amount to a roadblock to their franchise. Before making new law that would impede voting, the state should try enforcing the safeguards against fraud already on the books. At several voting sites in Milwaukee earlier this month, the crush of new voters ...

will be held at 1pm at Third and State street. This happens to be the location of the MKE Journal, which coincidentally wrote an editorial today stating requiring photo IDs to vote would disenfranchise voters. Go figure. We have been in contact with the WI GOP and a number of county chairpeople. They have been extremely helpful, and many expect to attend. It would be worthwhile to coordinate our efforts. I have come to understand the GOP will lose their majority on the election commission this June. Now is the time to act for voter reform in a city that ...

Will be held at the usual spot: Cathedral Square at 1pm. We had a great turnout last week at the countercoup rally. It was about a 3/1 pro W ratio. LET'S DO IT AGAIN! I'll make extra signs.

MU students voted more than once, survey finds Freshman says he did it to draw attention to 'screwed up' system By LINDA SPICE and JESSE GARZA of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: Nov. 14, 2000 A Marquette University freshman who said he was one of 174 students who told a campus newspaper they cast multiple presidential ballots said he doesn't fear prosecution if it highlights the holes he found in the political system. Election 2000 "I wanted to make the point that the system is screwed up here," said the student, 18, who asked not to be named. "I ...

The Boreman will be speaking in Cathedral Square Thursday at noon. Gates open at 10. Tickets are required to enter [we have about 100 available at the moment. We appear to be the major takers in our area.] While this most likely does not qualify for Front Page status, I felt it important enough to get in front of people. WI is definitely a swing state. My sense is support for the woodman is fading, along with the rest of the country. In a couple of the spots we stopped for tickets, we were the only names on the list. ...

Just returned from my Freep effort of Bore at the VFW convention here in Milwaukee. Two things surprised me: first, that I was the only Bore protester around [walked around the center a couple of times], and secondly, there were about a dozen or so [the biggest group by far] supporting Nader and petitioning for his inclusion in the debates. There were a couple of Bush people passing out lit and stickers, but overall it was very quiet. I appreciated all of the suggestions for signs. I elected to go with "Clinton & Gore sold our national security" with a ...

the Boreman is scheduled to speak at the VFW convention tomorrow, 8.22.00 around 11AM. While I am new to this forum, I am not new to the disaster klintoon and klowns have been for this country. I would like to participate in any events someone might have planned for the occasion. Would like to see the professionals at work. Now if I could get one of those cool signs Monitor used in Green Bay....
