A prominent Dutch journalist known for investigating the criminal underworld has been shot and seriously wounded on a street in central Amsterdam. Peter R de Vries, 64, was shot minutes after leaving a TV studio, where he had appeared on a chat show.

Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 24-year-old man who they say doused a customer with gasoline at Denny’s Wednesday night and then lit him on fire. The victim, 69-year-old Scott Ranstrom, is in critical condition with burns to his face and body. His family has set up a GoFundMe page. Deputies identified the suspect as DeShaun James Swanger.

Well, the big day has come and gone. Andrea Rossi's one-megawatt-capable E-Cat cold fusion device has been tested in Bologna, Italy; and the unknown customer, who ran the test, is apparently happy. There were some issues, so it couldn't be run at full power in self-looped mode, but what it did do was plenty impressive. It ran for 5.5 hours producing 470 kW, while in self-looped mode. That means no substantial external energy was required to make it run, because it kept itself running, even while producing an excess of nearly half a megawatt. They were supposed to be taking a direct flight from LAX to JFK -- but wound up on a 16-hour nightmare tour by air and bus of New York state. ... Dougherty County School Police are investigating a complaint of excessive force against a sixth grade girl arrested for protesting having her picture taken. Her father shows scratches on 11-year-old Treneashe Graddy's neck and back. She says she was thrown to the ground and arrested at Southside Middle School yesterday. When school officials tried to take her picture for school identification, she refused because her hair was not fixed. The girl was charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of an officer, and disrupting school.

Firefighters from nearly a dozen departments are battling several large grassfires that are endangering several homes near Bowie in Montague County. Eight to ten fires have been reported in the area, and appear to be fueled by the strong winds.

DALLAS — An attempted home invasion ended with what police called an all-out gun battle early Wednesday in a North Dallas residential neighborhood. The homeowner had a gun and opened fire on the suspects. He pursued them as they fled, hitting at least two of them, police said. One was found dead in an SUV several blocks away from the crime scene. Another was taken to Baylor University Medical Center in very critical condition.

Bob Teixeira decided it was time to take a stand against U.S. dependence on foreign oil. So last fall the Charlotte musician and guitar instructor spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil. He bought soybean oil in 5-gallon jugs at Costco, spending about 30 percent more than diesel would cost. His reward, from a state that heavily promotes alternative fuels: a $1,000 fine last month for not paying motor fuel taxes. He has been told to expect another $1,000 fine from the federal government.
