It once was called "The Forgotten War," but for many North Texas residents, the conflict in Afghanistan has never been far from their minds. For some, it is so close that it propels them into their own internal war fought on a daily basis. They, too, are in the thick of the battle, from the time they awake until they lay down for another night of fitful sleep. These are the parents of the deployed military.

Good seat, good seat. I’m feeling alright about my selection today. Few rows back from the front, good entry and exit points. People in front of me look to be of average height, unlike that freakishly tall family I’ve been sitting behind lately. It’s going to be a good Sunday. Wait, what’s this? The guy next to me has a pack of gum out. I love gum. So many flavors, so many varieties. They’re doing so many fun things with the packaging and the presentation too. You can buy it in little hip cylinders or flip open packets like 5...

ELIZABETHTOWN — Police quickly ended a Communicare patient’s escape Thursday morning after tracking the man over snow covered trails at Freeman Lake Park and arresting him near Ring Road. Hardin County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Greg Lowe said the patient fled the mental health and substance abuse treatment facility after learning he faced jail time for violating rules he was ordered to obey. It was shortly after 11 a.m. when emergency dispatchers flooded the airwaves with reports of Brandon Mullins, 21, running into Freeman Lake Park from Communicare. Lowe said Deputy Bud Baumgardner followed footprints through the park, toward Ring Road,...

Johnny Hart and Brant Parker, creators of the marvelous Wizard of Id and B. C. cartoon strips, penned an Id cartoon decades ago about the real Golden Rule, which portrayed subjects of the vertically challenged and uncharitable king discussing the golden rule—“He who has the gold, makes the rule.” If Hart and Parker were still with us, they would have seen their golden rule modified to include a new political golden rule unveiled in the Senate on Wednesday. A little background: On Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) introduced a tediously long amendment to the current health care legislation being...

The article is lengthy. Here is the Abstract of it: Since the beginning of the Republic, various forms of millennial religious doctrines, of which dispensational pre-millennialism is the most recent, have shaped U.S. national security strategy. As the dominant form of millennialism in the U.S. evolves, it drives changes in U.S. security policy and subsequent commitment of the instruments of national power. Millennial ideas contribute to a common American understanding of international relations that guide our thinking irrespective of individual religious or political affiliation. Millennialism has great explanatory value, significant policy implications, and creates potential vulnerabilities that adversaries may exploit....

WHITE MILLS — An autopsy on Thursday revealed that Karen Gillespie — the White Mills woman found dead near her residence Wednesday morning — was killed by head injuries sustained in a dog attack. Deputy Hardin County Coroner John Clemens said the majority of Gillespie’s injuries were head-related and she died shortly after the attack. Clemens’ investigation also revealed Gillespie died between 4:15 and 5 p.m. Tuesday evening — more than 12 hours before her body was found on a Webb Mill Road property adjacent to the home of the dog’s owners. The dog Kentucky State Police believe attacked and...

I am watching Huckabee on Fox and it looks like he is getting a little chubby. Does anyone else see the same growth?

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled her 1,990-page health insurance industry reform plan on Thursday, with its public option provisions, it’s a shame the public was banned from the announcement of the public option. Keep out. Keep out. Surely a new day of transparency and bipartisanship was on display at the steps of the Capitol Building. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) told reporters that the bill was crafted in “the most deliberative, transparent and open process” he had seen in his 29-year career on Capitol Hill. Well, since Hoyer says there is transparency, there must be transparency, right? Since...

LIVINGSTON, Mont. -- A hunter attacked by a grizzly bear in southern Montana also had the misfortune of being shot in the arm by a companion trying to stop the attack. The incident last Saturday resulted in the bear being killed, the attacked hunter surviving and no charges against the companion for shooting his friend. Park County Sheriff Allan Lutes says his office looked into the shooting of the hunter and found no negligence, with the other hunter trying to save his friend and killing the bear. "It doesn't point to anything but an accident," Lutes said. However, the U.S....

STATESVILLE, N.C. -- A local man said he knew a masked robber would kill him when he couldn't open a Statesville restaurant's safe. And because he has a family to take care of, he said he knew he had to fight back. Therman Martin said he found himself in a fight for his life late Tuesday night. He was working at the Pizza Hut on Signal Hill Drive when an armed robber burst in and tried to force him to open the safe. “He kept demanding I open the safe, and I can't open the safe. I'm just the oven...

While Helen of Troy’s face may have launched a thousand ships, Joe Wilson’s two words have launched an armada of pundits and elected Democrats on a crusade as ill considered as the Christian Crusades. While the Crusaders carried red cross emblazoned white flags to send their message, today’s crusaders rely on main stream media to proclaim that infidels protesting Obama Care must be silenced. Like Pope Urban II did in 1095 A.D., today’s crusaders rely on distortions to motivate their believers. Congressman Hank Johnson, (D-GA), in remarks supporting a resolution of rebuke of Wilson’s outburst said, “I guess we’ll have...

The last time I reviewed the Declaration of Independence’s list of fundamental rights, it still only contained the following: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Nowhere in this document, nor in the United States Constitution itself, is there an inclusion of fundamental rights to medical insurance coverage. So when did medical insurance become a fundamental right? Was there a law enacted by Congress announcing such a right? Was there a presidential executive order dictating such a right? Alas, a review of congressional laws and presidential executive orders failed to disclose any new fundamental rights. Since the Supreme Court periodically...

Many of us 'Old Folks' (over 50) are quite confused today about how we should present ourselves. Feeling 'young', we try to conform to current fashions and present a youthful image. Contrary to what you may have seen on the streets, the following combinations DO NOT go together and should be avoided: 1. A nose ring and bifocals 2. Spiked hair and bald spots 3. A pierced tongue and dentures 4. Miniskirts and support hose 5. Ankle bracelets and corn pads 6. Speedo's and cellulite 7. A belly button ring and a gall bladder surgery scar 8. Unbuttoned disco shirts...

When Manual Zelaya sought the Honduran presidency he knew his country’s constitution limited him to only one term. In June, 2009, Zelaya attempted to alter such constitutional limitation to allow himself another term. The only problem for Zelaya, his efforts triggered his own ouster under his country’s constitution. President Barack Obama, (BO) famous for decrying interfering in other country’s internal political systems, at least non-allied countries, now insists that Zelaya be restored to the presidency of Honduras. Not surprisingly BO’s position is shared with Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez and the Castro brothers. Chavez has threatened military intervention to restore Zelaya....

The outrage and condemnation that have greeted Robert McNamara's In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam ignore two major scandals of that war which have led to continued pain, anguish, and suffering. McNamara, too, conveniently ignored them in his bloodless account of how he and his colleagues in the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations were "wrong, terribly wrong" about Vietnam. A few months after McNamara told Lyndon Johnson that the war was unwinnable, McNamara did his part to make Vietnam America's greatest class war with his brainchild, Project 100,000. At the same time, McNamara knew but remained silent about the...

Summary: For well over twenty years, the pro-life community has been exposing the evil deeds of Dr. George Tiller. Tiller was regularly picketed over the years. Thousands came in the Summer of 1991 and were arrested outside his clinic. In 2001, on the ten-year anniversary of “The Summer of Mercy”, thousands again protested his abominable practice. His office was bombed once, and he was even shot in 1993 in both arms (his shooter remains in federal prison for attempted murder to this day). Tiller was also the defendant in a series of legal challenges intended to shut down his operations,...
