Michael Clauer is a captain in the Army Reserve who commanded over 100 soldiers in Iraq. But while he was fighting for his country, a different kind of battle was brewing on the home front. Last September, Michael returned to Frisco, Texas, to find that his homeowners' association had foreclosed on his $300,000 house—and sold it for $3,500. This story illustrates the type of legal quagmire that can get out of hand while soldiers are serving abroad and their families are dealing with the stress of their deployment. And fixing the mess isn't easy.---snip---"It's ridiculous how much this is costing...

If you do take random surveys, would you be willing to take a few minutes to answer some brief questions for a couple of college students? My two young'uns are doing research papers as part of an English composition class and are a bit short on the number of responses required. So if you're bored and looking for something to do, I would appreciate you taking these two short surveys:Large Hadron Super Collider8-Bit MusicRumor is that there will be a secret prize for one lucky respondent. Uh, yeah. Anyway, thanks for helping out.

O ye great and knowledgeable FReeper Technogods.... We're looking to considerably expand our home network and I've been toying with the idea of a "thin client" setup, not only for the sake of expense but also for ease of upkeep and administrative supervision. I've spent many hours in the last several weeks reading about how to build a server for small business/educational settings, and I'm starting to get information overload. One article will seem terrifically informative -- but written 5 years ago. Another will have some great cutting edge ideas, but little of the "how to" specifics I need. My...

Just wanted to let my FReeper FRiends know that my darling husband is finally home from Afghanistan! We weren't expecting him until Wednesday or Thursday, but Monday night the phone rang. "Do you think you could pick me up at the airport at 10:30?""10:30 when?""Uh, tonight?""Tonight??? I'll be there as soon as I can." I think we burned rubber backing out of the driveway.Meanwhile, it was a dark and stormy night in Atlanta. The flight was repeatedly delayed. That's all the monitor said: Delayed. We passed the time pacing nervously back and forth in front of the revolving-door exit. (They...

A section from the manuscript which has been put togetherA manuscript of a Robert Burns poem which had been ripped apart has been put back together in time for his birthday celebrations. The two pages of manuscript for "Holy Willie's Prayer" were separated - for unknown reasons - in the 19th Century. One half was stored in Burns' House in Dumfries, which bought the other part from a private collector late last year at a total cost of about £6,000. They have been reunited in a new frame to be displayed at the house. Alf Hannay, chairman of Dumfries and...

CIA's BUNGLED ITALY JOB: Sloppy use of cell phones, other missteps help police unravel cleric's 2003 abductionBy John CrewdsonTribune senior correspondentPublished December 25, 2005MILAN, Italy -- The trick is known to just about every two-bit crook in the cellular age: If you don't want the cops to know where you are, take the battery out of your cell phone when it's not in use. Had that trick been taught at the CIA's rural Virginia training school for covert operatives, the Bush administration might have avoided much of the current crisis in Europe ....(usual Trib copyright restrictions...click here to read article)

Slovakian Roma Forced to Ghettos Defying EU pressure, Slovakia is systematically segregating its Romany minority into ghettos, and barring their entrance into cities. By Arie Farnam | Special to The Christian Science Monitor KOSICE, SLOVAKIA – Teenager Lucie David still has nightmares about the evening two years ago when local police and neo-Nazi skinheads attacked her family's home in the small town of Stos in eastern Slovakia. "Rocks came smashing through the windows, and a crowd was outside chanting that they would rape me and my mother," she recalls in a whisper. After huddling together in the dark for several...

Struggle for survival Homeless woman pursuing goal of college education By Cindy Chang, Staff Writer PASADENA -- Sharon Brooms can tell you which buses are best to ride if it's a cold night, you need some sleep and have nowhere else to go. The 181 goes from Pasadena to Hollywood but stops running around 11 p.m. The 180 travels the same route as the 181 and is your best bet, she says, because it runs all night and you can get some quality shut-eye on the four-hour round trip. Brooms can also tell you how to breathe from your diaphragm...

Votes for Md. felons called a race issue Black Caucus battles to get rights restored By Tim Craig Sun StaffOriginally published March 29, 2002 In an unusually passionate debate, Maryland's black senators took the floor yesterday to urge their colleagues to pass a bill that would restore voting rights to many of the state's convicted felons. The Legislative Black Caucus has made the bill one of its top priorities, saying the law disfranchising people convicted of two or more crimes is part of a racist legacy that sought to keep African-Americans out of the voting booth. "We don't want to...

******************************* Muth's Truth's by Chuck Muth September 18, 2001 "PATTON VS. THE GODFATHER" This much we know for sure: George W. Bush is no George S. Patton. Then again, this is a different time, we’re facing a different enemy and, let’s face it, that’s just not this president’s style. What the country needs right now, and what we all should hope this president will be, is a different kind of general, which I’ll get to in a minute. But if you’re like me, in those hours immediately following the 911 attacks, your blood was boiling and you longed for immediate ...
