The Norman castle at Pevensey Bay is one of the most historic sites in Britain. It is built inside of a Roman wall, and was William the Conqueror’s headquarters. It was also used as a defense outpost by Brits and Americans in WWII It is currently several miles from the sea, but at the time when the Romans and Normans built the structures, the water lapped right up to the edge of the stone. The map below shows the bay 900 years ago, and the current seashore as a dashed line.

The debate over climate change is often a contentious one, and key players in the discussion only rarely switch sides. But late last month, Lennart Bengtsson, the former director of the Hamburg-based Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, one of the world's leading climate research centers, announced he would join the academic advisory council of the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF). GWPF, based in Britain, is a non-profit organization and self-described think tank. Conservative politician Nigel Lawson founded the organization in 2009 in order to counteract what he considered to be an exaggerated concern about global warming. The organization uses aggressive...

Replacing fossil fuels with renewables as the world’s primary source of energy will not only save the planet from dangerous levels of warming – it will also save the global economy US$ 71trillion by 2050. This is the finding of a report, Energy Technology Perspectives 2014, released today by the International Energy Agency, which looks at the direction of the energy sector over the next 40 years. The changes needed to keep the world within 2C of warming— a widely agreed target in efforts to tackle climate change – will benefit the global economy, confirms the report, although a “coordinated...

Another bizarre Obama holiday address… In his Easter Address this year Barack Obama reminds us that the great religions, including Islam, teach us to “love our neighbors as we love ourselves.” From the White House website: Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning… …For me, and for countless other Christians, Holy Week and Easter are times for reflection and renewal. We remember the grace of an awesome God, who loves us so deeply that He gave us his only Son, so that we might live through Him. We recall all that Jesus endured for...

This is a letter to the employees of a local restaurant. It's survived for decades, but is finally closing due to the latest increase in California's minimum wage. I guess it's better for the employees to have a higher wage, but no job with which to earn it.

A high school teacher in South Carolina is under investigation and has been placed on long-term administrative leave after he allegedly threw an American flag on the floor and stomped on it in front of his students. Scott Compton, an English teacher at Chapin High School in Chapin, S.C., reprised the unpatriotic deed in three classes over the course of one day, reports local NBC affiliate WIS. One parent, Michael Copeland, said he heard his teenage daughter discussing the incident and asked her to tell him the whole story. “He drew a couple of symbols, like one of them was...

The Crossroads of the West Gun Show attracted thousands of firearms enthusiasts to Ontario Convention Center today. The crowd was so large that officials slowed entry to the show to a virtual crawl during the show's early hours to avoid overcrowding the venue. Crossroads of the West typically attracts about 7,000 visitors during its Ontario appearances, show owner Bob Templeton said. He expects double that amount this weekend. The crowd, he said, is likely a reaction to expectations that Congress will at least give serious consideration to major gun control legislation this year. For example, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has...

It did occur to me that the since the precedent has been established that POTUS can simply waive laws, as in Obama's waiving of enforcement of immigration laws, and that Obama himself has granted numerous waivers for Obamacare itself, Romney can do the same thing until Obamacare can be repealed.

Two senior Republican senators want to know why a group of federal judges and court employees plan to hold a convention this summer at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, an oceanfront hotel where the website invites prospective guests to “frolic,” “pamper” and “play.” Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Jeff Sessions of Alabama said the conference for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco could ultimately cost taxpayers more than $1 million.

Sixty-seven years ago today, photographer Joe Rosenthal trekked up a mountain alongside U.S. Marines and snapped this indelible scene on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. Oddly enough, he had been rejected from military service for his poor eyesight, but today his vision is iconic.

The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her “guardian angel.” The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon. The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as “Angela,” was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements....

Berkeley fire officials ordered flags to be removed from the city's fire trucks Wednesday, at least temporarily. The decision was made by top department brass in order to avoid a confrontation between protesters who might try to steal the flags and the firefighters who would defend them, said Assistant Fire Chief David Orth. Orth said the "operational decision" was made in preparation for a protest today on Sproul Plaza at UC Berkeley. "We are fearing protesters might try to rip the flags off the rigs," Orth said. "I am not concerned about losing a flag; I am concerned about them...

Flying The American Flag upside down is a sign of distress. If the Slaughter rule is invoked and the health care bill is signed by Obama, the US Constitution, and therefore the country that was founded by it, has been betrayed. Our American way of life will be in extreme jeopardy....and I believe, even as a veteran, that this gesture is appropriate.

Why oh why is Ted Kennedy, someone who committed treason against this country by dealing with our mortal enemies the Soviets, being buried in the sacred ground of Arlington National Cemetery??? As an American Patriot I am completely disgusted and outraged by this travesty...this desecration of the resting place of so many of America's true heroes.

Three hundred thousand bikers spent Memorial Day weekend roaring around Washington in tribute to our war dead, and I stood on Constitution Avenue Sunday afternoon watching a river of them go by, waiting for a gap in the procession so I could cross over to the Mall and look at pictures. The street had been closed off for them and they motored on by, some flying the Stars and Stripes and the black MIA-POW flag, honking, revving their engines, an endless celebration of internal combustion. A patriotic bike rally is sort of like a patriotic toilet-papering or patriotic graffiti—the patriotism...

VIRGINIA BEACH -- "That pain is deep and it’s daily. You never forget,” says George Lutz, whose son was killed in Iraq. 25-year-old Army Private First Class George “Tony” Lutz II was killed by enemy sniper small arms fire on December 29, 2005. George Lutz has started an effort to get an official flag to honor and remember America's fallen war heroes. The Atlantic Shores Christian School graduate left behind a wife and two young children. Through his grief, Mr. Lutz had a burning desire to help other grieving Gold Star families. He invented the Honor and Remember flag as...
