When I published my commentary "Perry's Problematic Pals" in the American Thinker Monday, the reaction was swift. I had pointed out that Texas Gov. Rick Perry "is a friend of the Aga Khan, the multimillionaire head of the Ismailis, a Shiite sect of Islam that today proclaims its nonviolence but in ages past was the sect that gave rise to the Assassins," and that "last March, Perry gave a speech in Dallas in the company of Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform." In response, detractors emphasized the peacefulness of the Ismailis and criticized me for making so much of...

    ME!
My last daughter is getting ready to go deer hunting this fall. Unlike her two older sister, my youngest is a wee little thing. At 5'2", I believe she will always need a youth model rifle. My two older daughters both got their first deer using my Winchester model 94 in .44 Magnum. I was able to handload the .44 ammo so that it was very polite during practice. When hunting day came, I game them full strength loads....and in the excitement of the hunt they never felt the recoil. While my model 94 worked great for my two young...

Nebraska is gun country, the sort of place where one of the newsroom hunters sometimes brings deer jerky from a white-tail buck he shot himself to share with colleagues. We have no problems with responsible gun ownership. But the sight of gun-carrying citizens and protesters gathering near locations where President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak creeps us out. Stop it.

Midlands Voices: Who kidnapped my president? BY DOUG PATTON I finally figured it out. All this time, I thought President Bush was trying to outpace his father in broken campaign promises. With a steady stream of liberal ideas flowing from the White House with the presidential stamp of approval on them, I began to think Karl Rove had given up polling in favor of Hillary-style seances with Eleanor Roosevelt. Then it hit me. The movie "Dave" starred Kevin Kline as a presidential look-alike recruited as a decoy because he bore an uncanny resemblance to the president. When the real president...

Nebraska farmer declares independence from subsidies PAWNEE CITY, Neb. - Boyd de Koning is proud of his newest tractor. He starts it up and listens to it purr. It is a 1962, 1963 or 1964 Oliver 1800. They quit making Olivers more than 25 years ago. "You can get a lot of work out of one of these," said de Koning, 46, climbing down from the green cab on a mild winter day to walk around the place where three generations of his family have made a living since 1923. Neat and orderly, the 283-acre Pawnee County farm a mile ...
