The United Nations has admitted that it lost at least $600,000 after it canceled its controversial rental of a comfortably appointed cruise ship for U.N. staffers in the early stages of rescue operations last year in earthquake-shattered Haiti. The world organization abruptly backed out of the deal after a Fox News exclusive analysis showed that the boat rental for the 11,000-ton ship called Ola Esmeralda, which cost $72,000 per day, was vastly overpriced compared to going commercial rates. Overall, the U.N. contracted to spend $13 million on rental of the Esmeralda, and another $3.6 million on a companion vessel, the...
  • ObamaCare: The Used Car Contract of Lawmaking

    CNS News ^ | September 23, 2010 | Dr. Eric Novack
After 20 years taking care of patients, I’d like to think my life in medicine doesn’t bear much resemblance to working as a used car salesman. Now, though – six months after the passage of President Obama’s behemoth health care law – I’ve been forced to reconsider... Buried deep in the 2,400 pages of the President and Democrats’ health care bill, under layers of bureaucratic and legal language, is a “no cost sharing” provision for preventative health services. That piece of the new health care law, which goes into effect September 23rd, drastically curtails patients’ ability to spend their own...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Wednesday that the Senate’s energy bill is necessary for the “environment and for national security,” adding that the legislation will generate jobs and lower energy costs for consumers. However, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Energy and Public Works Committee, in a statement indicated that the Senate’s energy bill will eliminate jobs by making Obama’s oil drilling moratorium permanent.

California’s state legislature approved a $20 million settlement for kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard Thursday, The Sacramento Bee reported. Dugard was kidnapped as an 11-year-old near her home in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., in 1991 and held captive for 18 years by Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy. She was kept in a secret backyard prison and bore two of Garrido’s children before being discovered in August 2009. Dugard, now 29, and her family filed claims against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in February alleging it failed to monitor Garrido, a convicted sex offender.

  • Costly IRS Mandate Slipped into Health Bill

Most people know about the individual mandate in the new health care bill, but the bill contained another mandate that could be far more costly. A few wording changes to the tax code’s section 6041 regarding 1099 reporting were slipped into the 2000-page health legislation. The changes will force millions of businesses to issue hundreds of millions, perhaps billions, of additional IRS Form 1099s every year. It appears to be a costly, anti-business nightmare. ~snip~

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- It began the way it always does -- with the thump of horseflesh against horseflesh in a field so crowded, the wonder is that somebody didn't bounce all the way to Cincinnati. Dunkirk, a hot wise-guy horse, stumbled, and elsewhere, Mine That Bird, a colt nobody was even thinking about, had to fight a pair of horses for simple living space. Calvin Borel, up on Mine That Bird, did what he has always done here at Churchill Downs. He grabbed hold, steered clear and headed for his office.

A golden retriever named Buck that darted from his owners last summer after being spooked by a train whistle and went missing for six months is back home in Washington state, thanks to several residents of rural north-central Montana. The 7-year-old dog survived despite apparently spending most of the winter exposed to heavy snow and temperatures well below zero before he was found taking refuge under a collapsed building. "I've never had a miracle happen to me, so I don't really know what to think," said Kim Halter of Bonney Lake, Wash.
