California’s state legislature approved a $20 million settlement for kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard Thursday, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Dugard was kidnapped as an 11-year-old near her home in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., in 1991 and held captive for 18 years by Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy. She was kept in a secret backyard prison and bore two of Garrido’s children before being discovered in August 2009.

Dugard, now 29, and her family filed claims against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in February alleging it failed to monitor Garrido, a convicted sex offender.

They'd better take the settlement now before the IOU's are printed up!

I wonder if the IRS will declare it taxable income.

Sucks for the taxpayer, but they need to cough up the money.

I don’t know what to say. It’s just too weird. The state did fail though, No doubt.

Why does it always have to be somebody’s “fault”? $20 million, what a bunch of crap. It’s a terrible story but no one “deserves” anything!

An interesting point. I hope they have J.G. Wentworth on speed dial.

So will any of the officers and agents of this department face any penalties whatsoever? Firing, loss of cushy pension benefits? Or does the penalty fall entirely on us hapless taxpayers?

Make a proportionate reduction in every CDC employees pay. Maybe they will keep an eye on each other , just like employees in private enterprise seek to prevent the company from getting sued .

The kidnapper should be the one who pays up. Not the taxpayers.

>>”It’s a terrible story but no one “deserves” anything!”<<

WTF?

Sometimes there is “fault” and this case proves it. She deserves everything she got.

So, you are suggesting that you, in the event that your daughter was kidnapped at age 11, held by a convicted sex offender for 18 years, fathering children with her, would find no fault with the government agency charged with monitoring sex offenders, given that they failed miserably and routinely time and time again?

Sorry, I don’t believe you.

She does deserve the compensation and maybe twice as much.

While this is a sad case of State or county agents themselves causing the problem; legislation was passed and represents more of a shut up and go away payoff.

Because none of the individuals, policies or political corruption which actually caused this can be brought into review or to be found at fault; I believe that every person, manager and officer who was responsible should be fired with prejudice or have to pay themselves.

Nonetheless, the citizenry are held at fault and responsible to pay and not those actually responsible.

My take on this whole settlement: If the fat cat bureaucrats would get merit pay instead of sitting on their fat @sses waiting for their lifetime pension benefits maybe she would have been found sooner.

$20 million? That probably goes out monthly to retired security guards!

That's a great idea. Way too good for government to implement though.

“The kidnapper should be the one who pays up. Not the taxpayers.”

Sure thing, my FRiend. What’s he have....about $15.00? If the taxpayers don’t like it they should leave CA or elect someone who would monitor sex offenders better.
