The first concerted effort to understand all the inner workings of the DNA molecule is overturning a host of long-held assumptions about the nature of genes and their role in human health and evolution, scientists reported yesterday. The new perspective reveals DNA to be not just a string of biological code but a dauntingly complex operating system that processes many more kinds of information than previously appreciated. The findings, from a project involving hundreds of scientists in 11 countries and detailed in 29 papers being published today, confirm growing suspicions that the stretches of "junk DNA" flanking hardworking genes are...

NORMAN, Okla. - Two professors at the University of Oklahoma say they've developed a protein that can stop the spread of certain cancer cells without damaging normal cells. Thomas Pento and Roger Harrison helped develop a fusion protein that keeps some types of cancer cells from ingesting a vital protein called methionine. The fusion protein doesn't affect normal cells because, unlike cancer cells, they can be healthy without that protein.

LAKEWOOD, Wash. - A pit bull viciously attacked a woman and her two dogs, killing one of the dogs and badly injuring the other. Cynthia Greear says a neighbor's pit bull mix got loose while she was walking her dogs and viciously attacked. The male greyhound named 'Jet' barely survived. "Now he's by himself again, but we're gonna get him through it. He's a strong boy," she said. "His neck is torn from the back of his ear all the way down to the base of his neck." Greear's other greyhound, Angel, didn't survive. Witnesses say she was attacked repeatedly,...

A bomb threat at U.N. headquarters on Tuesday prompted increased security at the landmark 39-story building, a U.N. spokesman said. "The New York Police Department received an unconfirmed bomb threat so the U.N. stepped up security as a precautionary measure," said U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq. According to a U.N. diplomat, the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service received an anonymous phone call saying a taxi would arrive at U.N. headquarters overlooking the East River at 10 a.m. with two backpacks filled with grenades. The threat was relayed to New York police, said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity...

(CBS) NEWARK, N.J. Agents from the Centers for Disease Control boarded a Continental Airlines flight at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday afternoon after it remained grounded on the tarmac for two hours because several passengers had fallen ill. CBS 2 learned that seven people were treated for flu-like symptoms, but were not hospitalized. Continental Airlines flight 98 from Hong Kong landed at Newark about 2 p.m. with 272 passengers on board. It is not known yet what caused the passengers to become ill, but authorities in Newark were notified of the situation mid-flight and the CDC was called to the...

It has been years since Conrad Dobler terrorized pro football, but his plan for last Sunday was like that of most Americans: He would be a hostage to Super Bowl XLI, although with somewhat divided loyalties. During a career when he was billed as "the dirtiest player in the NFL," Dobler once toiled with the New Orleans Saints, whose quarterback was Archie Manning. "A great guy, and of course, his son Peyton is the man with the Indianapolis Colts," Dobler said last week. "So it's hard not to pull for Peyton. Then again, I was born in Chicago. I don't...

A small, non-toxic molecule may soon be available as an inexpensive treatment for many forms of cancer, including lung, breast and brain tumours, say University of Alberta researchers. But there's a catch: the drug isn't patented, and pharmaceutical companies may not be interested in funding further research if the treatment won't make them a profit. In findings that "astounded" the researchers, the molecule known as DCA was shown to shrink lung, breast and brain tumours in both animal and human tissue experiments. "You typically get this eureka type of feeling. It's the most exciting thing a scientist can get," Dr....

TEHRAN, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Three strong explosions jolted southern Iran on Thursday, the semi-official Fars news agency reported, but it was not clear if there were any casualties. The cause of the explosions in Khorramshahr in the province of Khuzestan, which borders Iraq, was not clear, but a local journalist said they were controlled explosions to destroy land mines left in the area since the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

THOUSANDS of birds have fallen from the skies over Esperance and no one knows why. Is it an illness, toxins or a natural phenomenon? A string of autopsies in Perth have shed no light on the mystery. All the residents of flood-devastated Esperance know is that their "dawn chorus" of singing birds is missing. The main casualties are wattle birds, yellow-throated miners, new holland honeyeaters and singing honeyeaters, although some dead crows, hawks and pigeons have also been found. Wildlife officers are baffled by the "catastrophic" event, which the Department of Environment and Conservation said began well before last week's...

<p>US intelligence has detected an explosion of less than one kilotonne in magnitude in North Korea but has not been able to determine whether it was nuclear or not, a senior intelligence official said.</p>
<p>The official, who asked not to be identified, said that first-time nuclear tests historically have been in the several kilotonne range.</p>

An evaluation of DNA/RNA mutations indicates that they cannot provide significant new levels of information. Instead, mutations will produce degradation of the information in the genome. This is the opposite of the predictions of the neoDarwinian origins model. Such genome degradation is counteracted by natural selection that helps maintain the status quo. Degradation results for many reasons, two of which are reviewed here. 1) there is a tendency for mutations to produce a highly disproportionate number of certain nucleotide bases such as thymine and 2) many mutations occur in only a relatively few places within the gene called “hot spots,”...

Wash—June 14—KIN—On June 5th, Bible Historian and explorer Bob Cornuke led an expedition of 15 geologists, historians, archeologists, scientists and attorneys on an exhausting mission 13,300 feet above sea level to locate and document the tremendous sections of what is thought to be Noah’s Ark located in the Ararat mountain range six hours North of Tehran, Iran. It had been essentially buried beneath the preservation of glaciers until last year when Iran recorded the hottest year on record which melted some of the snowcap revealing 450 by 75-foot footprint of the “object.” Noah’s Ark was claimed to be found in...

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The state Education Oversight Committee approved high school biology standards Monday that require students to "critically analyze aspects of evolutionary theory." The wording of standards had caused an impasse between the committee and the state Board of Education. Education Board members and state Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum worried the change would open the door to teaching alternative theories such as intelligent design. Under the wording approved Monday, students would have to understand how scientists use data to critically analyze the theory. "Scientific inquiry is taught at every grade level and in every discipline," Education Department spokesman Jim...

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - A Tacoma woman is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after being mauled by a pit bull Friday afternoon. Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Scott Smith said the woman in her 60s was walking by an apartment complex on 212th Street when the dog jumped over a small deck fence and attacked her. "It was really awful," said Kathryn Goddard, who saw the attack. The dog "just wouldn't let go and kept shaking the lady." Kathryn's mom, Dawn Goddard, also saw it happen. "I looked down right below my window and was watching this dog chewing on...

<p>As we watch the ongoing debate between intelligent design and Darwinism, we are learning why over 500 doctoral scientists have signed The Discovery Institute's "Scientific Dissent From Darwinism" statement. Slowly but surely, scientists are beginning to face the inadequacy of a long-held philosophy of science upon which Darwinism was founded.</p>

Life on Earth was unlikely to have emerged from volcanic springs or hydrothermal vents, according to a leading US researcher. Experiments carried out in volcanic pools suggest they do not provide the right conditions to spawn life. The findings will be discussed on Tuesday at an international two-day meeting to explore the latest thinking on the origin of life on Earth. It takes place at the Royal Society, the UK's academy of science, in London. Darwin's theory David Deamer, emeritus professor of chemistry at the University of California at Santa Cruz, said ahead of his presentation: "It is about 140...
